You little tease, you. It's - like TVD says - meant to be some illumination effect, but:
[1] I probably suck at illuminating things.
[2] You're looking at a pretty bad jpeg, personally I find it works in the bmp.
[3] Paint Shop Pro 8, man.
Also: draw more, Wooz!
On a sidenote:
[a] the 'mutant' is called Victor, he used to be really pretty and in love, but somethink happened and he is intent on fixing the problem. He is originally a shepherd.
[b] the old Meneer-like character is called Gustav Holzbrenner. Gustav's father still knew the old world and he told Gustav everything he knew about it, making the old poor geezer into the most valuable guide a party of heroes could wish for during their quest. He's a mechanic/scientist sort of man.
[c] the women is simply called 'the actress' 'cause that's what she is. She performs 24/7, wears wigs to fit her mood and follows our heroes because she lacks any drama in her regular life - she is addicted to drama. She can ward of the baddies by 'faking' a women's rage during a bad case of the rags.
[d] the normal guy is Alexander. He is the brother of Victor's wife. Victor's wife got kidnapped together with other people from his village. Alexander helps Victor because since Victor turned into this thing, his brain don't work as good as it used to. Alexander is a shepherd as well.
You'll see them pop up in all the drawings from now on, though remember that the women changes her appearance now and then.
@ mor: they are meant to be professional. Just be patient.
