Hey guys. Recently, I've been feeling the itch to play a space exploration game in the vein of Starflight, with all that explorey, sci-fi goodness; I've tried stuff like Space Rangers and Escape Velocity Nova, but that same magic just isn't there. Anybody have any suggestions for something different?

The only space flight "game" I've been playing is Orbiter, but that's not all that explory Very Happy
NAEV is quite fun for a while, and although it still has some things that have to be fixed, it's under constant development and really quite fun.

Oh, I see that there has been quite some development since the last time I played that game. Gotta play it again Very Happy

I'm not sure if space simulator with "RPG" elements count, but if yes - you should definitely play Freelancer + Discovery mod(Adds shitloads of ships, star systems and equipment.).
One of the things I really enjoyed in it was exploring another star systems(You wouldn't find the same looking one, and some of those are really beautiful), finding hidden bases and travelling thru meteorite fields and other similiar things. Also - space trading and general Freelancer lore is awesome!

But well, it's way different than Starflight. Still - you might like it. I've seen person who loved it and he was totally not into sci-fi stuff.

Not sure what to recommend you if you didn't like SR - I thought SR2 was absolutely amazing.

You might want to try Wing Commander: Privateer, the original Elite series and/or the X series.

Or, if you don't mind 50K co-players, i would recommend EVE. Though exploring worthwile anomalys might result in a stealthfleet trying to gank you. But its quite entertaining and there are lots of stuff to do.

Edit: argh, you got the prosper before i could answer. Damit. Busy guy, had 10 posts this time.

Oh, don't get me wrong, Space Rangers is pretty damn good, but it just has a sort of comical feel to it. I want grittier, darker, and it doesn't do that for me.

To this day I'm still waiting for Elite 4...

Since I'm bored to death with anything fantasy, I've been thinking about a space game too. I see Freespace 2 is popular on GOG.com. How's that one?

I'm thinking about grabbing Freelancer and Freespace 2 at some point. Any other recommendations?

I'd keep your eye on this:

Since it's only in Alpha I won't buy it and instead wait until they're done. However I have to admit it looks awesome so far.

Sincerely,

Freespace 2 is one of the best games I've ever played. It's not an exploration game though, just straight up space-combat sim/shooter. But awesome to the max.

Oooooh, shiny! Not quite what I'm looking for, but it has quite a lot of potential for a good title.
