While waiting for the Fallout 2 group iron man challenge, I started another run with a less optimal character.
He's been pretty lucky so far...
Luckier than Sander's guy? Not quite since I tagged Big Guns and not Energy Weapons. FUUU. My tag skills have been horribly useless so far.
I did the usual in shady sands and Junktown. Sided with Killian and killed Gizmo and settled for that. Didn't bother with the crazed raider, but some Skulz in the bar attacked me instead of the barkeep like they use to, so I wiped them out. Also screamed the drugdealer in the hub in the face and then flamed his ass with the flamer I bought for the truck money.
Shit hit the fan at hightower's when I screwed up and was caught at the door, flamed some people and dogmeat ran off to fight three people by himself and died. Didn't kill the hightowers though.
After that I bought a sniper for Tycho, and had the bright idea to go to the farm, forgetting to do Decker's easy jobs, now made even more easy since I've already killed off the guards. I'm outside the farmhouse now. It's gonna be hard since neither the alien blaster or the flamer has the range to shoot the first guy, so I expect Tycho or Ian to bite the dust in here, making the trip entirely useless.

Nice job on the completion Dead Guy, you have triumphed whilst I fell at the last hurdle. _________________ "A German Field Marshal does not commit suicide with a pair of scissors!"

Great job, Dead Guy.
I'm nearing completion on my latest Iron Man run, too. Will post results and screenshots when I'm done (or dead).
I'm a little surprised no one's done a real speed run, yet. _________________ No Mutants Allowed, your Fallout resource - Fallout 3 modding

Same. That was my plan B for a second character, which I still may do. Not found the time though. _________________ "A German Field Marshal does not commit suicide with a pair of scissors!" |

Is that the Watershed - Lou teleport and then Morpheus to the master? I can't remember how to do that. I guess all you need is speech and enough science to get into the vats computer? If you even need science for that? _________________

Yeah I can't remember for sure either but that sounds right. Doubt you need high science to do it.
edit: I seem to recall the robed techies carry key cards, which allow access without a science check? _________________ "A German Field Marshal does not commit suicide with a pair of scissors!" |

Yeah, but do they turn hostile if you fail the steal? I imagine that would be a problem at level 1. At least one has a laser pistol. The long trips at low level are also a risk factor, no? You still need to get away from the military base.
In Per's guide at least, there are several steps that rely on aimed criticals to the head, in addition to the travelling. _________________

^ True. If I were to use a speed method in an Iron Man game, I'd probably aim to attain level 5-7 before hitting the MB. So either invest in science or steal, and have some metal armour and psycho in case it goes wrong. (Though getting out alive would probably still be tricky) _________________ "A German Field Marshal does not commit suicide with a pair of scissors!" |

The Hub: i explore around a bit (long since), i find my way to that gangster dude, and accept his job, for then to explore a bit more. i manage to waste a bunch of money to some good-for-nothing hobo, for then to arrive at the watermerchants short of cash.
i decide to explore a bit more, enter the other part of town, snoop in the wrong building, and once again im fighting people i havent even properly greeted. i end up killing them all, (ian kills 2, the dog 1, leaving an honorable 1 for me to kill)
with new loot i aquire myself a metal armor, and plenty of stimpacks - also much money, not to mention a level-up
i pay for water delivery to the vault, and then eagerly run off to the sherriff to snitch out that pesky gangster dude. we gather in the guys basement, and fight it out like wild animals
ian is out of ammo, so he runs around pinking up the same throwing knife, using it again and again, incredibly killing one of the guards with it.
but in the muddledness, i manage to shoot the deputy twice. not that i have to worry about any reprecussions, by shooting him - twice - he begins to retreat from battle. she sherriff goes down next to me, and for some moments i contemplate simply giving up.
but no!
i stimpac up, and keep fighting, i only have two guards left, one is out of ammo, being eaten by the dog, hanging on to his last shred of life. then ian retreats, and the half-dead guy gets up, knocks me down w his bare fists, and keeps beating me untill im dead.
shucks.
ah well, at least that guard got to "win the ironman challenge". heroic effort on his part _________________ "That's your excuse for everything, isn't it - being dead." |

Here's my third attempt at an Iron Man, which will be my last because of the way it ended: with the most untimely death, ever. Because of the 60-odd screenshots, I put it all in Spoiler tags. Go read!
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers)
Here's the character I'll be using. It's geared to my specific tactics: get the Plasma Rifle and Power Armor as quickly as possible.
First, though, ratkilling:
Then, picking up Ian:
And going to vault 15 for easy XP and armor:
Oh goddammit, I needed a rope for this.
Ten minutes later:
Right, leather jacket. Mad Max style. Time to go for Power Armor and Plasma Rifle. First stop, the Hub for Rad-X:
By the Brotherhood for the location of the Glow:
And inside the Glow, this time without actually forgetting a damn rope.
After spending a long, long time trying to kill robots with a standard pistol (lots of xp, lots more time taken), I find the combat armor and the hallowed plasma rifle:
Of course, I'm not actually strong enough to use it properly, so I'm stuck with the plasma pistol for now.
Back to the Brotherhood, where Cabbot graciously lets me in:
And onward to the Power Armor! Systolic Motivator, gogogogogogo:
But then:
Ugh.
Well, I'll just go do some quests then. Deathclaw!!
Necropolis!!
I love Set. He's so much fun to talk to.
But he employs MURDERERS!!!!
Thankfully, they're incompetent guards as well as murderers.
Water Chip time!
Right, this is game over, right? I got the water chip? Main quest done?
Fun fact: first time I played Fallout, I never found the Water Chip. Killed the Master and destroyed the Vats before finding it. Game won! weirded me out.
Anyway, I'm a good guy, so I did repair the ghouls' water pump:
Yeah yeah, send me back out again:
Time to clean up quests for XP. Radscorpions:
Doc Morbid:
Killing Gizmo:
Picking up Dogmeat:
Picking up Tycho:
Enough XP to up repair and fix the Power Armor, at least:
A few Hub quests later, and discovering that the Hightowers flee if you kill their guards and leave the map (whoops), and I'm ready to take on Decker and Kane. No problemo:
And that gives me enough cash to up all my SPECIAL stats:
Boneyard time! Fucking Blades, punk-ass bitches harrassing all those poor townies:
Wait, what? Oh, well then, that changes shit. Have to get them some guns, first.
Whoops. That was close.
But that wasn't, except for Ian being an asshole and deciding to stick with the knife instead of his .223 pistol.
Everybody dies:
Turbo Plasma Rifle! I AM INVINCIBLE:
Off to DA MASTAH
Apparently, his Mutants don't like being harrassed. Tough shit
Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww:
How about no?
Oh but it is. The Master hits self-destruct, and beautiful nuclear destruction comes back to the world:
Just one more thing: the production site. The Vats must be destroyed.
Dogmeat and Ian die first, though:
:'( I shall mourn you till the day I die!
Vats destruction!
About to leave the base:
Aaaaand....I died. I left the safety of the Vats, found out there was still one Super Mutant guard alive outside, and he hit me with a 75-hit point critical to kill me outright. Yep. I did everything in the game, basically completed it - except for the 20-odd hexes I needed to leave the area. I'm just going to go kill myself now.

^agreed that was awesome, besides, being a noble hero means to make sure everyone else is safe first!
much better than my crappy demise, taking the sherriff AND deputy with me to hell, dooming not only my poor vault (whom i have now exposed to the merchants) but also the security of the Hub (and possibly the whole region) _________________ "That's your excuse for everything, isn't it - being dead." |

what for? im dead.
"so you could have died earlyer, duh!"
i did consider it before playing, but i figured i save like 10 times a minute anyway. im doomed to get killed at some point or other, no matter what difficulty. its fallout.
i dont get the whole thing with playing games on max difficulty all the time, besides the piss-contest value of it, whats the point?
in this entire world ive so far only found one person who agrees with me :I
ive played fallout on higher difficulties, and from what i noticed the only difference is the percentage chance of hitting something fell drastically. im assuming you also take more damage, deliver less, etc.
im allready getting *you missed* all the freaking time anyway, and the thought of even more *you missed* just shed all my interest in an instant _________________ "That's your excuse for everything, isn't it - being dead." |

I played on normal difficulty to have a normal Fallout experience, not a modified one. I feel it's important for an Iron Man run. _________________
