"Tracing" is not an automatic sin, guys :I
If you are an artist of some skill, and you don't need to trace, then tracing is obviously below you.
But if you are an aspiring artist, and need all the practice you can get, then tracing is a very good method of training your wrist control.
It's not a competition, you know :0 _________________ "That's your excuse for everything, isn't it - being dead." |

It's a waste of time at best. There are better ways of training your wrist control, if you catch my drift _________________ Opokonverob Project (A RPG like in the good old days)

Depending on what you trace, you can do both! _________________ "That's your excuse for everything, isn't it - being dead." |

I have no problem with tracing per se and it is of course perfectly valid for practice purposes etc. But I don't like it when people post tracings of photos as their own work without mentioning it. I see why they do it, it can look cool and many people won't notice and give feedback for what they perceive as "great skill". It's a fraud and nothing else. And the guy outright lied about it, he even posted a big journal entry that said, amongs other bullshit, "My most recent artwork is not as well done and I am the first to admit it. Why? I mentioned this in a previous journal but I stopped drawing like I used to. I found that I enjoyed other forms of art a lot more and as a result my skills have gotten a bit rusty. Could I still do what I did before? Of course.
(...)
If you think my art is traced then good for you. I am here to tell you it isn't. Think what you must and don't spam my artwork with your accusations in the comments. It is unnecessary."
Now if you look at his drawings...
=
=
And when his "skills have gotten a bit rusty", he produced these:
Seriously.
It's no coincidence that his very obvious original drawings are scanned while the tracings are photographed at an angle. It's harder to line them up with the original pics but they still fit perfectly when you compensate for the distortion introduced by the camera angle.
Link to the lulzy album of "by hand" drawings. I don't think posting comments will do anything, I guess he actually believes that he drew all of these pictures by hand with photo reference only. Let's just have a good laugh at his expense. It's still sad that people will always fall for these, though. _________________

As a "skilled" artist (I am dead serious) my opinion is that I think the kind of skill you learn with "tracing" is almost zero.
Its not so much about wrist control here. If you can write your name properly then you don't have to learn any control here. We are talking about the basics of Motor skill (if that is the right term). Its like doing a training to hold a pencil.
When it comes to art and learning skills it is much more important to teach your brain, your hands will follow naturally. Learning something about perception. Perspective, shading, composition, tones etc.
That is something which you can not learn by tracing stuff because it is to repetitive. Your brain is not working really because you are not "studding" the object you draw. Hence why this wrist training is useless in my eyes.
When you want to improve your skills really the only thing you can do is doing it the "hard" way. Get your self some object and make a fucking still life. Regardless if you use pencil, charcoal, or any colours. Its about trying to study the object, correct shapes, getting an eye for distance, proportions and shortening.
You really want to get better in art? Train your perception. Your brain. Not your wrists. You train them already hard enough when you fap. |

Dude, you're preaching to the choir. I never said "tracing totally beats thinking, observing, training and practicing as a way to get better", so please, let's not run off with that.
There's plenty of people who have an absolute zero base level when it comes to drawing, and for them tracing does sometimes help, because it "kicks off" their ability to form lines according to what they see.
It can also be a way to learn to "override" your brains perspective-corrections (To see something familiar at an angle, reproducing it, your brain often corrects the angle to make the subject more recognizeable)
Of course, it's up to the artist to be concious about the purpose of their method, and not flaunt traced images as original...
Again, not saying it's the only or best way, but one of many optional methods to gain some xp. _________________ "That's your excuse for everything, isn't it - being dead." |

I dont want to attack you Zeck, it is just pretty much wrong what you say.

no no, its just that what you said is pretty much wrong. And I know it. I am an artist.

just accept that its wrong
again, you learn zero from tracing so its just a waste of time. hence why no artist is doing it to improve his skills, regardless if professional or aspiring. You have absolute NO reason to train your wrist crontrol. If you can hold a pensil and write your name, then you have already the needed skill.

Again, its actually NO way to earn anything.
From all the teachers and art lessons I visited over the years tracing was never ever in any way important or even mentioned for a beginner. Believe me when I tell you that there is simply nothing you can learn from it. And my goal is to work as illustrator/artist at some point and I am currently in a school for graphic design. So while I am not a professional yet I think I do know the one or other thing.
Tracing is like throwing some instant meal in the microwave and believing you are learning the skills needed for cooking.
You really want to train your brain? Do still life. Not tracing. (in a general sense).
I am sometimes tracing MY OWN WORK, yes. Because I am not spending 5 ours again just to get a sketch I did on a new sheet of paper when I can do it in les then 10 min. Thats why I have a glass plate in my room. It is a good tool for a professional.
But if you really are a beginner or if you want to improve your skills then tracing is the last you should do. You dont gain anything from it and you even get the false feeling that you achieve some quality here. You are bosting your ego. Nothing more nothing less. The real danger is that particularly for a beginner you actually teach your self wrong habits. You teach your brain to be lazy.
