I had originally posted this:

"Granted the undertaking would be hideous and massively time-consuming. But...

I think it'd be pretty amazing if someone, or a group of people, could recreate Fallout 2 into the Fallout 3 engine. The amount of work itself, as I've said, would be staggering but it'd be a million times better than the current version of Fallout 3."

Thanks to Per for "moving it", then locking it, and replying. Nice..

However, being able to explore Fallout 2 in a fleshed-out 3D engine would be pretty awesome.

Per, I would start such a thing but we currently lack the tools to do so. Besides, I like working on isometric based games. But if a project existed, I would definitely help work on it.

This in the right place for you now?

The fallout 1 intro with very minor changes could be substituted in, but that would probably be illegal

It does here. We don't allow illegal files or support projects to create illegal files.

Also, why would anyone bother to recreate Fallout 2 into Fallout 3, when Fallout 2 has the superior game-system to do what it wants to do? Fallout 3's basic set-up is crap for a p&p-RPG.

Honestly, I like Fallout 2 the way it is. Being able to explore the world in 3D would be interesting, but don't forget you'll also lose all the tactical aspects of the game in the process.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd much rather have the talented modders here create a completely different storyline in DC, one that would actually make sense.

such a project would be an abomination unless the rpg system was actually fixed so that it was like that in the original fallouts (in other words a modified version of g.u.r.p.s. that actually effects gameplay), and a turn based combat system.

the issue right now is i think that everyone is waiting for a fo3 cs, or set of modding tools of some sort.

really what i want to see is yes, a total conversion for fo3 that turns it into a plot that actually makes a lot of sense, but also make the world more in depth. a good example is making settlements that are consequential. fo3 settlements are tiny even by fallout standards, i guess that can be explained by the dc violence if you really want to but the truth is that it destroys opportunity for exploration and quests. its one of the reasons why fo3 feels largely hollow compared to the others(though fo1 in some areas wasn't much better).

one of the things i expected and actually wanted to see was a more in depth dc proper. sure there are super mutants, but we are talking about one of the most violent armed cities on this entire planet. some of the large buildings that survived would have definately become havens for gangs that formed into something more. the way i see it they'd become more like small settlements of 50 people or more(well in bethesda's worlds more like 12-20 people...... ..... .... ) that have INTENSE violent rivalries with the other holdouts in the dc zone, a sort of holdout from their true gang days. you could even see some behavior kinda like that seen in the apalachian mountains, where the gang families start becomeing heavily about blood ties and distrustfull of outsiders because of the constant fighting.
