Info from Sweclockers.com. The numbers are taken from Total War: Shogun 2, Battlefield 3 (Ultra), Stalker: Call of Pripyat, Anno 2070 and Metro 2033.
The GTX580 is used as the base value.

So roughly 8% better, wich'll probably increase as their drivers are improved.

But yeah, there really are few games that'll use up all that power. Razz

Sure, if your main concern is power consumption. Real-world performance gain is going to be limited (benchmarks show substantial increase in some games, little or no increase in others), so it isn't really worth upgrading to GTX 680 if you already have a current-generation GPU. If not, then I would wait for a mid-range Kepler GPU - I'm sure GTX 660 is right around the corner.

Fun fact - current generation consoles are so far behind on the technology curve that NVIDIA's circular numbering scheme is about to catch up with them. It probably won't be more than a year or two before we see GeForce 700-series GPUs, which will put PS3, with its GF 7800-based GPU, ten generations behind the PC state of the art. I am smugness, hear me roar

It's not my main concern but it sure is important. I remember my 8800 ultra. At first I had this 550 watt 'LC Power' power supply and the damn thing simply couldn't give enough juice to the GPU and at times the PC would simply turn itself off during the middle of a game. I think I replaced it with a 750 watt corsair...good ol' times where mom and dad would simply give me money to buy stuff.

8800 ultra really that bad? I ran a 8800 gts on a 500 watt supply fine.

Well if I ever trip over a large bundle of money I may upgrade to one of those, does look nice. Comments are pretty funny as well.

The 8800 GTS was different. 8800 ultra was more like the 8800 GTX, but slightly more powerful.

yea, the comments are pretty lulzy especially the ones about the consoles...

they already announced the gpu for the 720... its based on 4-5 year old tech right now, and its slated for Q3 or Q4 release 2013

We just can't start a topic about PC hardware without tripping over the whole "consoles and their crappy hardware" thing, now can we?! Rolling Eyes

lol.

technically i thank consoles right now.

thanks to consoles and how limited they are and games are built to be multi-platform....

i can still play todays games on my geforce 8800. and if consoles "upgrade" to what microsoft has announced for the 720, i wont even need to upgrade.

so for the forseeable future, i will be able to keep my 8800 thanks to consoles.

Yeah, I have a 880GTX, too, and it's pretty much fine for most things.
Well, I don't play much anymore, anyway.

I have a quickly-aging GTX 470. I can still play 90% of games at highest settings at 60 fps. I might upgrade in another year, especially if I get a bigger monitor at some point. To be honest, I've gotten used to games looking good and being able to run them at very high settings at crazy framerates. I don't know if I could go back to the "old ways." As much as it sucks to see the industry stagnate, I don't care enough about graphics to think that the sacrifices required in gameplay to support them are worth it.

Agreed.

I'm fine with 2008 standart graphics. The thing is, that other aspects of the game haven't even evolved past the infant stage. There are so many things one can make with good sound, artistic design, A.I etc. You get a pretty good looking game that desperatly lacks in all other parts, it's like having a plastic doll (good looking one) instead of a real girlfriend. This situation is only good if you got a fetish (both ways).

Hehe, when I assembled my current computer in the year 2008 (!) I was worried my i7 920 would become "too slow" before the end of the decade so I installed an aftermarket cooler in order to achieve a steady overclock when the need arose.

I still haven't overclocked a single Mhz and the only thing I upgraded was my GPU (4890->560ti twin frozr) and not because it became obsolete but because I grew tired of Amd's shitty drivers and the extremely loud fan.

Haha glad to see I'm not the only one doing that!
I've got the i5 2500K, because benchmarks (THG) showed it overclocks to levels comparable to an i7. When it was just released, the price difference justified that.
As GPU I picked the GTX 460. Again because it did quite OK on the benchmarks, and was at my price point.

I'd rather buy a 150-200€/$ GPU and upgrade it after 2 years, then buy some 500€ monster that I'm afraid to upgrade because it was so costly.

Same here, I enjoy running games at my native resolution (1920x1200) with at least 60FPS but I don't notice the difference between medium and high levels of AA and AF and I don't particularly care about gimmicks like tessellation and Physix so I definitely don't need two GPU's or a single 500€ card. Heck most of the games I play these days would run fine on my old PIV with a 6600 card Smile.

Im still running 1gb 4850 and i can still play most games, tho latest games on low settings mostly, so i guess its fair to say its showing its age (and its starting to make lot of noise and heat). I think upgrading to 6950 or 560 ti should last the next 3-4 years.

Looking at the prices of 680 at least here in finland (around 500e) i cant think of anything to justify it over current 200e cards which seem to run current and near future games with ease.

Ill see how the 660 fares before upgrading tho.

Fancy, rocking out a GTX 460 Cyclone at the moment and can run most new games pretty well. Main problem is ye olde AMD 64 x2 3.10ghz dual core processor tends to slow things down for the rest of the team.
