Fallout Ironman is hard. |
frankly thats what makes it interesting.
we ALL survive a fallout playthrough. because we save, and load if we die.
even in very careful save-a-lot games i find myself slapped to death by sudden and surprising critical hits. had those been "iron man challenges" that death would have been much more interesting than simply tapping esc, load, enter by impulse
the time and method of your demise is what makes this all so intriguing to read (and buxbaums effort so pointless )
im gonna give this a shot when ive gotten my lazy-ass to re install, which ill do once ive gotten my stoner-face some weed _________________ "That's your excuse for everything, isn't it - being dead." |

Well, this was fun.
I started a gifted/finesse character with special at 6-9-2-2-9-9-10, intending to get 10s on five out of seven once I get to the BOS for surgery and the suit. Went to shady sands, talked to the gate people, got the crop rotation xp and rope from the barn, then after recruiting ian instead of heading to v15 I thought I'd go to vault 13 and stop the rebellion and surf the web at the library (good early xp). I do all that shit, clearing out the weapon and supplies rooms and getting the "I could use some more stuff" stuff from the overseer.
On my way out of the vault Ian takes out the 10mm SMG and blows me to bits while aiming at a rat _________________

Update:
Level 9, joined BOS and got power armour. Tried to get the Decker quests but Kane didn't like me. Killed Jain anyway, dogmeat died at this point Cleared the raider farm to give Ian the .223, however he died whilst freeing the BOS initiate. Killed some super mutants around the military base for xp, realised that this was risky due to the chance of minigun ignore armour critical roles.
Went to Junktown with the intention of recruiting Tycho, the JT guards still hate me and attacked on site. So I went to Gizmo and got the job to kill Killan. Went on a rampage through Junktown, killing all the guards, deposing Killan and cracking his safe. Return to the Casino map for a reward....a grey system message appears informing me of some script error 'OK'. But wait....Isn't that Killan outside the casino? "I've got the evidence to take you in now Gizmo" says the spectre. I decide to chat with him, as he doesn't seem to have transferred our animosity into the after life. This proved to be a mistake as it crashed the game. Not sure when I last saved to protect against such problems. Pissed off.
edit: seems my encounter with the afterlife has fucked with teh tense. _________________ "A German Field Marshal does not commit suicide with a pair of scissors!" |

Exactly.
Hah, bad luck there Formerk. I have a feeling Ian will prove to be the demise of many an ironman.
Yoshi, I hope your last savegame isn't from too long ago; scenario's like that always de-motivate me for a few days. _________________ Yamu: "There's a gentle-but-implacable authority that stems from over-hyphenation which is too-often under-appreciated.

Yeah, there is a lot of crashes going on in Fallout. Scrip errors galore.
I barely have enough time to read this forum and do my homework. Sunday is so not a fun day. _________________

Hmm, I think fraps didn't take some of the screens I wanted it to take, but anyway. Got started with my run today, and I decided to try with my playing to live build anyway.
The Diary of Some.
I cleaned out all the rats in the cave, met some rats on the way to shady sands, convinced Ian to tag along promising him a piece of the action, then took care of rad scorpions in another cave. Went back to 13 and talked the rebels down. (I really don't know if there are other things to do in 13, I didn't play Fallout 1 that much, and never bothered to go back to the vault since they didn't let me in the first time.) I got a shotgun from the stores.
After that I went to vault 15, had a rope that I found in a shed in shady sands, found another in the vault, and also a hunting rifle that Ian refuses to use. Killed all the rats, but got bit by a few. Hopefully the wounds wont fester. Went back to Shady sands and got asked to rescue Tandy, went with the power you've never heard of option and got Tandy out. Decided I didn't want to fight the Khans yet, headed south to Junktown instead.
I also found a sub machinegun in that caved in vault. Ian hasn't shot me in the back yet and I'm beginning to trust him, but I won't give him this SMG. For some reason, it just feels like a really, really bad idea. _________________

Luckiest Fallout Run Ever
So, I went for it too. Had Black Sabbath's Iron Man playing on repeat throughout the ordeal. Image-heavy report under the spoiler tags, for people who hate image heavy shit.
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers)
So here we go, small arms focused character with high luck:
Once I get out of the vault, I run into the best thing to happen to my character before even getting to Shady Sands:
Red Ryder LE BB Gun, bitches! Everyone dead.
Go by Shady Sands, get Ian, then try to steal some kid's BB gun (for BB ammo):
Get caught, Ian shoots him. I murder all of Shady Sands. And all the children.
Childkiller? Nope, because Ian was the one who shot all the kids:
Yes, yes they are.
Now that I'm murdering, I just continue on. First up, Doc Morbid:
Next up, Killian.
And of course, Gizmo:
After I pick up Dogmeat.
Who lasted all of ten minutes, because I went to the Hub and the dreaded Deathclaw:
Aaaaaand shot him myself, goddammit.
This is when shit started going sour. Tried to get the .223 pistol a little too soon. Result: a dead Ian (whatever), and this:
Crippled arm? Ruuuuuuuuuun.
Of course, you can't ever go back to that area. *sigh*
Fine then, on to the Glow for some Plasma Rifle and Power Armor goodness
Yeah, now where did I put that rope
....Oh, goddammit.
*ten minutes later*
Right. Combat Armor, Plasma Rifle:
Now for Power Armor.
Yeah yeah, Systolic Motivator, go con Michael into giving it to me.
Wait, what?
FINE! I'll go steal it from Rhombus, then.
Except:
Rhombus catches me, I presumably fail a speech check and get kicked out of the Brotherhood of Steel.
GODDAMMIT.
In a desperate bid to get back in, I try to go free the BoS knight held in the hub. Yeah, bad idea: I'm dead in one round, and apparently the screenshot didn't take.
So ends the pretty lucky run that could have been much luckier.

Good to see more {I said "peeps". Beat me like a baby seal, please.} joining the fun.
I saved at level 8, so no big loss - killed some mutants and visited Junktown.
Anyhow, an update - never used spoiler tags before, but I'm guessing it's just

Yep.
Hmm, this is wierd - it no longer seems to be saving my f12 screenshots. The only reason I can think of is that I moved the Fallout folder to program files (was on desktop before). It says it's taking them, so I'm guess they are going somewhere. Will try to search for them...
EDIT: Right, it's working for new screenshots - will search for the old one's at some point. _________________ "A German Field Marshal does not commit suicide with a pair of scissors!" |

okay,
Name: Zegh
Age: 30
S: 5
P: 9
E: 6
C: 4
I: 10
A: 8
L: 5
yes, i am a hero! its me! tried to sortof reflect myself, not physically strong, not very athletic, a good perception, i can see fairly well plus i am also perceptive in a mental sense. not to boast, but i can be pretty damn clever also. my brains makes up for my lack of charisma, which also tends to reflect reality some times
i have fast shot, and i am obviously much gifted!
this gives me 32 hp, and i tag
Small Guns: 53%
Lockpick: 58%
Speech: 63%
Upon stabbing to death the rats (wont waste my ammo on them) i arrive at Shady Sands, and do a quick book-case check. i am a very efficient guest, "hi there, lemme check your cook-cases!", i then inform the dumb farmer about crop rotation, and poof i got my 2nd level right there.
I then have a chat w the local doctor and the village leader, before i go and recruit Ian, and for free of course, otherwise i woulda been frustrated, having allready spent a considerable effort to push my speech up.
We visit the caves, kick the radscorpions tails, bring one back to the doc, and pling, another level!
new perk: awareness, i like awareness!
Ian's been good so far, so i venture on to Vault 15, explore it, find the leather armor, and Ian takes this oportunity to
1) block my path, but i wait patiently and eventually he moves away without the need to resort to violence
2) he shoots me in the back of my head for 12 HP, but thats okay, it gives me an oportunity to heal myself for some xp.
i then take the trip to Junktown, and on my way we fight molerats (resulting in yet another level), and radscorpions. Before entering Junktown i make sure to move guns away, cus i dont want even an anomaly-related mass-attack event for running in w my guns out.
I arrive at Junktown, safe and sound, with 47 in total hp, and small guns, lockpick and speech raised to 75, 60 and 79 respectively.
so far so good!
btw, how do you guys make screenshots? i assumed the print screen button would work, buuut it doesnt :I _________________ "That's your excuse for everything, isn't it - being dead." |

Arrived in Junktown, or so guard says. Won't let me in until morning, so I camp outside the walls.
Spoke to a guard named Lars this morning, warned me about gangs and Gizmo at the casino. Walked into something advertising itself as a hospital, climbed down a set of stairs and found what must've been a mutant. I could barely make out what the creature was saying, but it was obvious it was eating human flesh, so I killed it for the good of humanity. A crazed thing in white robes came at me and I killed that too, whereafter I escaped the dungeon and was beset by two thieves who I also sent to their grave. I'm starting to see what the overseer was talking about.
Found a store, thought I'd see if I could trade for supplies or find leads to where I could find a waterchip. Bought some more stimpacks and a desert eagle, thing looks mean. As I was trading with the proprietor, Killian, we suddenly came under fire from a man shouting at us. Ian shot our assailant dead, and Killian thanked us for saving his life. Hired us to find evidence this Gizmo character bought the hitman, for a price. I'm tired, saw some kind of hotel nearby, will crash there.
Woken up in the middle of the night and asked to deal with someone taking a hostage in the other room. Went in there, spoke to the guy some, he started thinking, I took the chance to close on him and shot him dead.
Went to the bar the next day, got directions to somewhere called Adytum and Brotherhood. Als met a desert ranger that was willing to tag along with me, might come in handy in the wastes. There was a shooting in the bar, some gang member was killed by the bartender.
Went and talked to Gizmo wearing a wire, made him confess wanting Killian dead. Went back to Killian with evidence, got more stimpacks for the job done. Got another 500 caps for coming along to stop Gizmo.
Went back to the motel, talked to this girl by a door, was in the gang. Convinced her to get out of there. Took a good nights sleep, and then talked to the gang, stole an urn for them and then they told me they were attacking the bar. I snitched to the guard Lars, and came along to stop the gang, hoping to gather even more currency before heading south, since no one seems to know anything about vaults or waterchips. Shot the Gang Member who took a shot at the bartender, then another gang member.
It was then that the guards turned on me. Still don't know why, to be honest.
Went back to Killian to trade all the stuff I picked from the guards dead bodies, started shooting. Killed him too, took all his stuff, including his safe. Then it felt like a good time to scram.
Took me two days to get to the Hub, hoping to find a waterchip here so I can get back to the vault without too many more gunfights

FUU, was about to post my very interesting story, but you already did that in Junktown
Alright so I decided to give this a shot after being appealed by your epic tales! Although I do not know Fallout 1 very well (but I know Fallout 2 awfully much), I hope not to die at the first random encounter.
My character is a pistolero: a fast shooting gunslinger that shoots, hopefully, 5 times in a row, with a decent critical chance.
Leaving the Vault, I decided to clean up the cave, because is that a way to greet newcomers? Biting them?! So, I slaughtered a few rats and then proudly fled with 3 hp. I went straight to Vault 15, but came across Shady Sands on the way, so I stopped there, been scorny with farmers, convinced Ian to follow me for free - as if I was going to pay for a loser that has 90% chance to die because of my missed shots!
I said: Hi Tandi! Hi Aradesh! Hi, random dweller! And I looted all the bookshelves. I mean, when I was able to do it, because these farmers weren't too friendly. I cleaned up their caves anyway (that means I watched Ian stabbing the radscorpions to save my ammo). In the meantime I gained a dozen of "free samples" of poison antidotes... More like a "free stockpile". Anyway.
Being done with this shithole, and proudly level 2, I decided I was too afraid to go to Vault 15 yet - my memories are unclear about it, somewhere between The Glow and Sierra... Although I know it's supposed to be easy. Then I went to the only interesting location to level up and get some real gear : Junktown.
And this is where my story becomes a bit strange. First of all I impersonate Morbid's thug so that the dwarf tells me about his business and the quest in Hub is enabled. Then, I go straight at Killian's store to buy a leather armour and a desert eagle. That being done, I kill this - I agree, he's shitty - assassin and go record Gizmo's nice voice, then I kill him with the guards help, the quest is done and everyone is happy. Everyone? No. I still have to kill the thugs camping in the hotel. I try to talk to them a bit, but nothing really happens, so I provoke them and they try to kill me. I slaughter them, with the help of my lovely Dogmeat, Tycho and Ian. They're dead, quest is over, I can proudly walk away!...Right? That's not what Junktown guards seem to think, and they shoot me on sight. I'm in the middle of a town where guards want to kill me. What to do? Loading, of course! Hell yeah, but it's iron man. So, here's what happens...
Having about 20 leather armours and so much stuff I can't decide what to do with it, there's a switch of plan: no more Vault 15, I need to get to The Hub to successfuly build up my own caravan business, specialized in leather armours. This game is crap ;_;
To be continued...
P.S. Funny how everyone is more or less at the same point!
P.P.S. Sorry for my awful English. It's not my native language, and my tale is not as funny as I'd like it to be _________________

Glad I'm not the only one to be harshly treated in Killan's fascist shit hole.
My character atm. Time to conclude my shiz in Shady Sands, Junktown (which will probably mean killing them all) and move onto Angels Boneyard. Fuck, I love this game. Next week I'll try to Iron Man F2; I won't succeed! _________________ "A German Field Marshal does not commit suicide with a pair of scissors!" |

The Hub.
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers)
First thing is first, I buy some books and spend most of the day reading. I pick up some vital skills from this.
Talked to this farmer(k) loser. Apparently their are some raiders on his farm. First tough fight. Really need some stimpacks here. But they go down easy. Key part of the battle was running into the next room when there was only two guys left and both were gunning for me, especially as I was bored of using a stimpack every turn. Also Dogmeat soloed a guy in one turn, so awesome.
Deathclaw, Harold? I'm there. Also I picked up some metal armour but didn't want to pay $9000 for combat armour yet.
So I talk to everyone and get lead to the the Deathclaw lair. Oh fuck, maybe this isn't such a great idea.
So the fight is not going too well, Tycho is getting hammered and the deathclaw is just taking all our attacks like it is nothing. Ian is fighting with a knife. Great idea dipshit. Then Tycho the crazy son of a bitch:
Yes, back in the fight. It's tough, the deathclaw finally dies but at a price.
Not really worth it IMO. But awesome fight. Time to get into the main quests. Someone reference what I did in another town, cool. But you heard what I did to Gizmo and the Skulz right?
They want me to kill so people, I come back with the law.
The fight does not go well. Decker's two goons go down fast. Dogmeat and Ian fight Decker(and kill him). Kane kills the Sheriff then the deputy then dogmeat then me. Game over. Fuck. How many stimpacks does that jerk have? I could have outlasted him with my own stimpack but what would be the point?
Reflections:
If this was non-Iroman there would have been 4 reload points. First steal fail, Doc Morbid's guard attacking me, Tycho dying, dogmeat/me dying.
Stimpacks are a really bad mechanic. Should have a heal over time effect.
The Hub has some awesome combat.
Sandy Sands and Junktown really don't have enough content to be two separate towns.
Having party members die and that's it is awesome except Fallout really doesn't have enough replacements. A few more spread across the other locations would have been good. But the whole followers system was last minute so it's forgivable.
