Word comes from IGN that Ukrainian developers Best Way (with a bunch of WWII RTS titles to their name) are coming out with a little something they call Nuclear Union, an RPG based on the premise that the Cuban Missile Crisis went a bit out of hand and now everything is radioactive and there are monstercams on the loose. In a completely non-startling twist, this time we see how the Soviets were doing in their underground shelters.
Scheduled for launch sometime in 2013 for PC, Nuclear Union is a role-playing game with an open progression structure. You’ll have a defined end goal, but the way you accomplish it is up to you, and you’ll be able to go back and freely explore any discovered territory. Gameplay be presented from a third-person perspective and though battles will take place in real-time, you do have the ability to pause the action to better line up your aim. You’ll also be able to recruit certain characters encountered on your adventures and travel with one at a time, and can issue basic commands to them during combat.

Playing as one of the pilots who bombed the United States, expect to encounter mutated monstrosities, bizarre anomalies and to defend yourself with Soviet prototype weaponry, including specialized assault rifles and tripe-barreled sub-machine guns.
There isn't much to go on yet - the short trailer doesn't show any gameplay, so the actual level of RPG-ishness is sort of up in the air - but it's certainly another project to toss on the big watchheap of post-nuclear shenanigans.

Spotted at the Codex.

Looks bad.

But a bit better than Fallout 3.

Looks very interesting.

It should be given benefit of a doubt, it's way too soon to judge differently, especially having in mind how barren and sad this genre is atm. Later, we shall see.

This looks like some spinoff to Stalker or Metro 2033. It could be a good thing. With atmosphere like in those games, if RPG elements done right, this could be one damn revolutionary game.

Plot framework looks unique. USSR soldier as the PC?!Smile That alone gotta worth our attention. And Ukrainian (especially Best Way with its Men of War series) are known not to pumper players - that's one more great plus.

On a bad side, just because of (supposed) big aspirations, this could turn out to be deeply flawed product riddled with bugs and CTDs which e. europeans games are well known for (especially stalker series).

Finally some real smell of new post apoc IP, I'm sick of gimmicky fallout videos presented as second coming.

Anxiously waiting for more meaty info about this.

Even if it turns out mediocre it has two things that heavily interest me.

1. You're Russian and that's new.

2. 1C is making it and they make great games.

Sincerely,

I just wonder how the real-time third person combat w/ pause for aiming works. The first thing comes to my mind is some kind of bullet-time system or FO3/FNV's VATS.

1С makes pieces of shit mostly. I can't recall any good game by them. And they don't make it, it's another developer, 1C is only publishing.

The original name of this game is "New Union" (Новый Союз), but apparently 1C changed it to "Nuclear Union" to announce it to English speaking audience.

PS. somehow screenshots look far more better than the trailer itself.

How dare anyone take initiative and contribute to a genre I have an interest in.
I hate Fallout 3 and NV, but these guys are just copycats.
I've decided not to like it because it doesn't look, feel, smell and taste like Fallout 1.
I could make a better game but I won't.

Quote:
Do you plan to have a moral choice system throughout the game?
Some game quests might trigger some a moral choice that might affect the various plot lines. But the protagonist, an active Soviet officer, will definitely never join forces of evil.

Sounds awfully black & white then.

Quote:
Will the combat in Nuclear Union will be real-time or turn-based?
All battles are real-time, but it will be possible to use active pause. For example, for more precise shooting or assigning commands to the party members.

Was looking forward to turn-based combat to be honest, but thanks to Kickstarter there are a few more turn-based games on the horizon.

Let's wait and see.

I know right? Razz
Space Rangers 2(and the subsequent releases) was pretty great. But I chalk that more up to Elemental Games/Katauri and not so much to 1C. The video seemed a little.. meh, but I'm interested.

Some confirmed RPG elements would make it more interesting. Nothing we know so far is inconsistent with a 100% tactical game. It seems pointless to brand it non-interesting, though.

This sounds like a bit of a dream game, post-apo RPG set in Russia with fallouteque twist of alternate history. Really excited and hopeful for this.

This is going to be another claustrophobic gray corridor shooter with some gimmicks like a gas mask, and completely broken basic mechanics, such as weapon damage falloffs or AI noticing you in complete darkness.
