inXile has announced on Facebook and Twitter and likely every other social network known to man (perhaps even MySpace?) that Mark Morgan, who most here know for scoring the original two Fallout titles, will be composing the soundtrack for inXile's Torment successor, just as he did for the original Planescape: Torment.

Speaking of which, the Facebook post dubs the game "Torment: Tides of Numenera". It kind of sucks as a title, so let's hope it's not official. (EDIT: It's official.)

Probably they will include the title change in one of their funding goals to stimulate the backers Very Happy.

We will probably come to like it eventually. What's in a name, anyway?

"Tides of Torment" sounds like a good gamebook name.

But . . . what? It's supposed to be Tides of Numenara: Torment!

It's not. Some people are just picky.

"Torment 2" would be enough.

Numenera is the setting! The "tides" are bound to be something symbolic.

Maybe my opinion will change when we learn something of the storyline, but I think the title sucks: it tells me nothing at all about the game and the X of X is about the most generic and abused title structure ever to exist. It's nitpicking though, ultimately I don't give much of a fuck about the title they'll use. Smile

I'm not sure how to react to all this news.
In less than a year, there is major, drastic change in industry - and in the center of it is a revival of some classic titles, one way or another.
It is a great thing, without doubt, but I'm a bit puzzled on what stance to take about all this right now. Sure, it all looks sweet so far, but I'm still reserved without first seeing some finished product - W2's development seems to be going smoothly, but still has a way to go. I'm not sure if inXile's will to revive (or try to revive) another classic at this time is a good idea...
Also, is MCA on board? I don't want to sound as a fanboy or anything, but it's kinda hard to imagine Torment without him. Yes, of course, he wasn't the only part of the crew, but wasn't his chunk the biggest when it came to the game's story and characters?

On the other hand, I could as well be quite misinformed. Honestly, I haven't been closely following news in these last few months, this is an opinion based on cover, so to speak.

And to get a bit on-topic, regardless of how this turns out, I'm happy that Morgan is making new music.

I support the name bashing. The game should have been titled "Numenera: Torment". And then when they did a "sequel" it should have been named "[Insert New Setting Here]: Torment" and so on until people stop buying your thematic sequels. Amen.

He was definitely the "visionary" so to speak, and I remember reading him reminisce about initially wanting to write everything himself and then realizing it was kinda dumb and learning to let go and let other people design other areas.

Still.. they basically got a huge chunk of the crew, including some original PnP Planescape guys, they have the Numenera folks on board, and Chris Avellone gave his blessing. Even if he doesn't work on this, I don't see why it can't be a worthy Torment-like game.

The Torment name is obviously a publicity ploy from Fargo to actually get people's attention. I still think it could have worked without getting Torment's name outright, but either way, it's not something I'm exactly super-annoyed by.

Wasteland 2 progress, and how and when the Kickstarter is launched will determine whether I give Fargo my monies again or not. (Though uh, that's not necessarily all that important for you, and that's fine.)

Well, I read it as he had to give a few areas to other designers because he just couldn't do all the work. And even then only under tears.

BN would know better as he did that interview.

And they don't really have a huge chunk from the Torment crew

Going from the credits its only Colin and Adam so far. (If I didn't miss someone)

That said I'm fully optimistic that they can deliever and I trust Colin and especially Kevin Saunders. Part of the Torment/Planescape team or not.

They've only announced seven people so far, three of whom worked on Planescape Torment (Colin, Adam and Mark Morgan) and three more who were instrumental on the Planescape setting (Ray Vallesse, Dana Knutson and Monte Cook). Kevin Saunders is the only one with no direct ties and he's absolutely key to my positive feelings on the project, for his work on MotB and other titles.

Still, 6/7 isn't a bad moyenne, so far. They'll hire and announce more people as they move forward.

And yes, MCA would've liked to have written everything himself. He still wrote something like half of the game's texts.
