This is a very multi-faceted question but I'd summarily say that it's not the fault of the education but rather more likely the student. Not always but I think I have a point to be made there. I received the same education as others and we are in vastly different worlds of knowledge. "Where'd you learn this shit?" "Same class, but I was paying attention"

I guess this is the wrong place to discuss this and I can solely talk for my education here in Germany, which was more or less 15 years ago. To make it short, almost nohting of what I learned there, is really helpfull. But that's acutally not even the biggest problem. I think the largest problem with our current education is motivation.

So it's not so much about what schools teach you, but how they teach it, which is a huge problem. Even for those students that are good ones, getting great grades and being very intelligent. So it's not only a bad system for those that are underperforming.

Might read it later on. Would be nice to hear your thoughts on education systems and what needs to be changed.

Yeah education is very extrinsic but most children aren't as keen to sit down and learn in a school setting. I was fairly fascinated with learning most subjects and I think that I had a lot more intrinsic motivation to learn because I found it fun.

I've been in a family of school employees and am one myself. I've got a lot to say about my local public education system. Idk where you're from Pax

but if you've ever heard of SOLs, they're one of those "great ideas" until you put them into practice and see the results it has on how teachers teach when met with these requirements.

I wasn't a teacher, but I have spend quite a few years in education and with children. A disclaimer here! I can ONLY talk about the German school system in detail. The issue with extrinsic motivation is, that we're facing a society where this becomes less and less of a factor. Look at automation and the new wave of digitalisation. We're really facing an educational crysis here in my opinion.

We could very well face a society in the near future, where machines will know more and perform tasks quicker than any human ever could. What is 'learned' or 'memorized' knowledge worth once you own a device that knows more than any human could? Creativity, social interaction and the like, might become much more important for the average person.

I mainly dislike the asian education system, specifically the Philippines one. What makes me dislike it the most would be the culture behind it and the curriculum.
The curriculum and grading system here is just lackluster for me. Hell, Science class lacks any form of structure and your grade here is graded based on a bunch of drawing projects.

    Then there's religion.
I don't mind if a "religion" subject if it is an optional class, however ours isn't and happens to be part of a student's average grade unlike the computer subject which somehow isn't despite having more practical use in the workforce.

Then there's its failure in creating much more intelligent individuals. Students are essentially shallow minded and lack independent thought, which has led to them dismissing any form of criticism towards a lot of their dumber ideas and the "ignorance" of other issues like climate change and mental illness.

There are a lot of other things I dislike about the education here, like the lack of breathing room and the pressure of being this one type of "ideal" person. To be honest, education here feels more like training and preparation for work deployment than anything else.

As for intrinsic reasons and intelligence, if society here would stop brainwashing children with the logic that "money, work, and God matter the most!" then people here might be much more curious and eager to learn about the world and possibly even try to find ways to assist in our growth as a species.
Really just annoys me that the people here care more about money and "heaven" more than knowledge and the world.

@Pax the Sectoid problem with the God aspect is that whole “religion is the opiate” thing. In some places, religion is all people have to get them through the hard times. I know that if I weren’t pagan, I’d have stuck a fucking gun in my mouth (and even then I’ve attempted suicide 4 times, but I digress).

The point I’m making is that religion, while technically brainwashing (at least when it comes to the more dogmatic ones), is taught for a kind of emotional crutch
