Okay so recently I was watching a video about how the new fallout games do not stick to lore but a common theme in the video was the biased nature of it. the guy in the video praised Fallout 1 and 2 for being great games "which they are btw" but he slandered games such as fallout 3, 4, and yes even New Vegas. When I looked in the comments of the video I saw the same thing people saying things such as "Yeah the original games were the greatest screw Bethesda!!!" These same people also belittled those who dared disagree with the man in the video which I found to be pretty pathetic. Honestly I feel personally that way to many Fallout fans give the original games to much credit with statements such as "Ugh if Interplay were making Fallout games they would be way better!" Despite this not being true given Interplay was going bankrupt it stills shows a very common theme with these fanboys.

It is a question that's been asked and thrown as an insult for at least 10 years now. The answer has never been a resounding YES.

People have looked forward and given some benefit of doubt since the beginning and been more or less burned every time, it has led to nothing but two titles roughly about halfway where the series was heading origininally, and one of those two isn't even an RPG but a tactical combat game.

I wouldn't go as far to say Fallout 1 & 2 kick so much ass even New Vegas isn't safe. F1 & 2's strengths are more for worldbuilding and background info rather than things like gameplay I feel.

What video was it by the way? There's a few out there but I tend to stick with Mister Caption so I wouldn't know who the uploader could be.

This will be a wall of text, I just woke up and had only a couple hours sleep so I can't think very well, I am also not a native English speaker and usually I am hard to understand when I type a lot (even when I am not this tired). I will probably start going in circles. Please read this imagining me calmly speaking. Text doesn't convey emotions well and I tend to rant, which might make people think I am angry aand shouting or something, nothing is more far from the truth.

Prone Squanderer, is right. The definition of a fanboy is being blind by the product/brand they "follow". So a classic Fallout fanboy is blind, but it might not be by nostalgia, it might be by many reasons.

The Nostalgia point is not applicable to most classic Fallout fans (real fans, not fanboys), nostalgia is wanting something from the past that you don't have anymore or remembering something (most of the time pleasant) from the past you can't have anymore, but most classic Fallout fans play the classic games regularly, so they are not affected by nostalgia (because they play the game in the present too).
Also classic Fallout fans are quite aware of all the flaws and problems on those games. They are fans because the know the good and bad about those but the good still outweighs the bad for them.

I thought that video nails it, and I am surprised he didn't even mentioned how Fallout New Vegas only had 18 months to be made.
Remember, that video is not saying that new games are bad (he even says the new games are not bad), that video is saying that new Fallout games are not Fallout games.

There is a difference between it's not a Fallout game and it is a bad game.

He points out quite well and clearly what made the first games Fallout games and how the new ones don't have any of it, or if they have a bit of something from the old games, it is just that, a bit. And that was the point of the video, it was a video for the 20th anniversary of Fallout and meant to showcase the history of the games and what made Fallout be Fallout.

He doesn't hand-wave stuff just because the classic games had it and the new ones don't. He mentioned all the things that were an essential part of the Fallout games. He also mentions what the new games do well or improved (like he says he prefers the FO3 speech checks being a % over the flat skill number of FNV, he mentions that FO4 has better shooting, etc). But what made these games be it's own unique thing in the classics was gone. Basically, what made Fallout be it's own IP was gone, and the new games focus on different things (and while FNV has a few of the classic things, it still lacks a few others).

Imagine that some other cult game IP was bought by a different company, let's say Doom was bought by CDPR. They grabbed the franchise and made it a third person action RPG like Diablo. Made it so you can play with the Doom guy and still kill demons and use weapons from the classic games. From now on all of the Doom games would follow that formula... That new Doom was not Doom anymore except in name. Same goes for if Final Fantasy started being visual novels instead of jRPGs, Call of Duty would become a board game, Minecraft would become a turn-based game where actions would take energy to do and you would have an energy bar and have to wait till it refilled to do anything else, World of Warcraft becomes a MMO text based RPG, Pokemon becomes a post-apocalyptic shooter where you kill feral pokemons, etc
Even if any of those new style games were popular and/or good, it would still not change the fact that those games were not Final Fantasy, Call of Duty, Minecraft, World of Warcraft or Pokemon anymore.

Now the same question can be asked about new Fallout fanboys. Are they blinded by whatever reason that they can't even recognize the good things in the classic games and can't discern any bad things about the new games? That they can't accept that the classic games were it's own thing and changing it so drastically totally made the new games not be Fallout games except in name? The answer is yes, because like I said before fanboys are blind.
New Fallout fans (not fanboys) will acknowledge the games faults and see how the new games are not really Fallout games, but they still enjoy these new ones and have fun playing it. They do not try to justify with mental gymnastics that the new games have everything the classic ones did except they are now not in turn and are in 3D.

It's the same both ways, Fanboys will always be blind (for whatever reasons) and shout as soon as someone criticizes anything about the product/brand they follow, while fans will know the good and bad about the product and can actually have polite discussions with people who criticize they products/brands they are fans of. It's how the world goes around.

I liked your analysis of the situation I as a fan of the series I love playing all of the games but at the same time I have no problem calling out the flaws in each of them I also found some things the guy said true and agreed with them but I also found some things he said to be a little bit nit picky but as a whole I understood why some things he said might annoy him. Now as for some of the people in his comment section however the same can't be said it's clear who are classic fanboys and who are new fanboys one side says that Fallout should have never left Interplay and another side says that Bethesda made it better both sides can be argued on one hand I personally believe that if it weren't for Bethesda Fallout wouldn't be around today do to Interplay going bankrupt on the other hand however I find mechanics in the new games to be a hit or miss but still though I can enjoy them. I think the biggest problem with these people are that one side can't accept change but the other side can't accept history that history being the roots of what made Fallout what it is today. As a whole I enjoyed reading your response to the pole it was very thought out and made for a great read.

I will respectfully disagree with you Bethesda has made some bad games they've also made good ones yeah fallout is different but you gotta look past that and look at the positives Bethesda is trying to capture Fallout while also allowing new players to the series to get a good grasp of it and we all want Fallout to be more popular right?

I look past the fallout name and I see mediocre games full of bugs and shit writing.
And I give zero shits about the series being popular, I want it to be good, and under Bethesda it's been in the crapper consistently, with the only ray of Hope being New Vegas, which Bethesda still decided to be shit about and screw Obsidian out of their bonus. Bethesda isn't trying to capture Fallout, it's obvious they don't care what the series is actually about, they just want to capture the dollars from cashing on trends.

Good writting, actual quest design, multiple ending paths for both quests and the main game, rpg systems that actually have an effect on character building and how the player can tackle quests on every different run. You know, Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas.

I love Fallout 1 2 and New Vegas but I mean doesn't Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 allow for different outcomes to? Both games have multiple endings to just like the 3 you mentioned and Fallout 3 and 4 have an RPG system as well you kill enemy's for XP and after awhile you get to level up and when you level up you can do more things heck New Vegas 3 and 4 actually make you have to level up in order to do certain things such as lock picking or terminal hacking so i'd say they allow that as well and also they also allow for perks if you want to do a sniper build you can or if you want to be a melee user mostly you can I feel you're not giving credit and are like this thread shows might just be a classic fanboy rather then look at the pros and cons of all the games you look at the 1 and 2 without error but see the rest minus Vegas as inferior.

What about the bad fallout games Interplay made?
