I've seen Fallout 4 get a whole lot of hate that is for the most part entirely justified. I personally don't think the game is that bad and I don't think it got everything wrong. What are some things you guys think it did right?

One thing I liked was the graphics. I know graphics don't make a game good but they can help make it a bit better. Bethesda has never really had graphical power at the top of their list but Fallout 4 is definitely a step up from their previous games. Also I just like looking at things that look good.

This is a tiresome broken record response, but I don't think it got anything really right. It has cluttered and messy storytelling, cluttered and messy gameplay and it's cluttered and messy to even look at.

I'll probably post a re review on here at some point detailing my opinions on a second playthrough.

Needless to say, it got Power Armour right, also as much as I hated it at first, the settlement system is at the very least a little fun, the companions actually feel like real people which is nice, there are some aspects of the main quest which I like a lot. I'll go into these in detail, needless to say, it's a game of two halves, one which is a pretty solid fps and the other which is an awful rpg.

I really don't think it did power armour right.

Power armour, to me, was always supposed to be graceful, an extension of yourself, I believe they say as such in NV?

In 4, its just 'generic clunky robot suit'...

I've always thought of it as a tank made into a suit of armor. Less light Iron man or the Halo Mjulnir armor but instead a walking tank. The clunky big feeling makes sense to me but I can see why people don't like it. I personally like how they did it but I hate how often it breaks.

I don't mind the power armour, I like that I feel really strong with it but as @ThatZenoGuy has pointed out before I don't like how it's built on a frame and that pieces from different armours can be swapped around. I don't like fusion cores either, especially since most of them are in generators still working without maintenance 200 years after the War.

The Vault design is something I felt they improved on, the jumpsuits in particular are more like the classics.

(Has a thread like this been made before? I'm certain I've given the same answer about Vaults in the past.)

Maybe if one has been made I will delete this one and just copy everything I've said to the other one.

I think Fallout 4 did nothing really "right", but a lot of things had potential only to be immediately ruined by lack of effort.
The power armor felt good, but overall it was lackluster in its execution. The addition of the T-60 as pre-war armor was stupid, the fusion core mechanics came out of nowhere, and the overall system got stale very, very quickly due to the armors being introduced very quickly and not being of much use.
The settlement building was in interesting addition, but again, its execution was lackluster and it got boring really fast. The settlements have no real effect on anything, and while you can send out caravans they don't really do much. Boring.
The weapon customisation is a neat idea, but AGAIN, the system is so basic it loses all appeal very quickly. The improvements are all linear, most weapons are kinda pointless, and nothing makes much sense.
Armor system. Good idea to bring the layered armor back, and in theory it's pretty cool, but so many outfits are, well, outfits that don't allow much else, and the art direction on some of the armors is pretty shit. The combat armor looks absolutely retarded.
The storyline. Again, good idea, even though the whole high-tech android more human than human stuff isn't exactly the most Fallout-y thing. Execution in the end, terrible. The story is scripted for retards ("Hey, your friend Dogmeat here looks like he could follow the trail" WTF WHERE DOES THIS DOG COME FROM AND WHY DOES THIS SYNTH KNOW HIS NAME) and the pacing is terrible. Your actions have some effects on the world, but the options are still very limited. Bonus points for actually making making it impossible to stay friends with everyone.

Playing devil's advocate: Is there a reasonable argument to be made that T-60 existed as a pre-war side-project and was completed by the Enclave? The lore is muddy to me as it's been a while.

I read the lore and it was made before the war but wasn't widely distributed since it was made JUST before the war.

Umm... Nothing. Like actually nothing. Lore is wrong. Stories vary from cliché to outright terrible. Shooting is worse. Dialogue is worse. Characters are worse (for the most part. There are some I genuinely like, like Travis, piper, most of the companions really) Power armour is ruined by being commonplace and weak AF. Graphics are still far behind the standard (tho this isn't a problem for me). The companion affinity was mishandled as all hell. It's too simple. The crafting system sucks. Its overly simple. The settlement system is a dumb and pointless addition that straight swallowed the map) (Beat dogmeat and heal him and she likes that). The art style is wrong. Look no further than ghouls. So yeah... Nothing.

The stupididest thing about all of Fallout 4's issues, is that they can almost all be fixed with a TINY amount of effort.

T60? Easy, make it a rare suit used by high ranking paladins, it's a modified T54-T45 hybrid with postwar tech, made by the BoS.

X-01? Rename it to "Advanced Power Armour Mk1-2", make one suit in the entire game, and make it hard as fuck to get, its some dead enclave long range scout that trekked to the east coast.

Power cells? Maybe make them a win-lose scenario. Normal power armour can last forever, but if you have high science skills and such, you can convert them to power cells, which allows you to 'overclock' the armour and run faster/jump higher/smash harder, at the cost of needing to be refueled.

I would have said that since the original power generators of pre-war armors were running low, power armors in Fallout 4 have to be jury-rigged to use these fusion cores that run out quickly. That would also qork with a more elaborate armor system; different PA chassis that use these cells more efficiently and that can accept different types of armor plating, and when you find a "new" suit of PA you have to modify it first to use fusion cores to move it. Later you could find a way to refuel the internal generators, allowing you to use PA indefinitely.

That would need the power armours to be used for like 200 years though...

The fusion cores are happily powering entire buildings, yet somehow run out always after like 30 minutes of power armour usage?...

This is NMA after all. Also, apparently there really just isn't much that is genuinely good about Fallout 4. Every single thing is flawed at least by laziness. As soon as one thinks about anything in Fallout 4 for more than one second it becomes apparent that it could have been much better with just a tiny bit of more effort.
They did get the graphics reasonably right, though. The environment at least. Yeah, people complain about bad textures here and there and the terrible animations and so on, but all in all the game looks just fine. For some reason I liked the architecture in Fallout 3 better, but I do think they still nailed the style. Yeah, it's not Crysis 3 (or even Crysis 1 with a few mods), but what game besides Crysis is?

Fallout 4 seems to have issues with lighting and plastic textures for the most part.

Item design - it's obvious a lot of effort was put there. Just the sheer amount of different items helps to make the world more believable. Some cool looking weapons, especially the handcrafted stitched together pipe guns. (shame they became useless very quickly)

Environment design (not level design) - a lot of cool looking locations and landmarks from Boston. (shame they were filled with cannon fodder)

Character creator (not character progression or character building) - a nice tool with a lot of capabilities. It's a testament that some people tried making their characters look like celebrities and politicians from the real world in the first weeks after launch at great success.

Weather and atmospherics - may not always be realistic but sometimes serve to create very strong apocalyptic moods.
