Where will dialogue go in the future of the Fallout franchise?

    So after returning from a galaxy far, far away and experiencing early 2000's dialogue systems, I returned with a question, where will dialogue go in the future of our beloved franchise? Todd Howard addressed that Fallout 4's dialogue wasn't received well, so I'm wondering if they will go to a more complex system or just modify the dialogue wheel.

    Modify. They'll take a mod like the dialogue mod which does something as simple as display the whole text, use that, and say "look we listened to you guys."

    They'll keep the 4 options system, but so that they don't have to write extra dialogue, they'll make the same 4 options every time.

    The First 3 will be "Yes", "No" and "Maybe". The fourth option, which was in FO4 reserved for asking further questions, since Bethesda doesn't want to write the lore, will be replaced with "I don't know"

    And since here at Bethesda, we know how much you love extra dialogue options, you can buy an extra dialogue option for $9.99(Which people will genuinely use as an excuse as to how the dialogue system isn't limited). The new Dialogue option is "Can you repeat the question", and will simply repeat exactly what has been said.

    I dont know why they changed it in the first place. The dialogue system was basically perfected in the late 90s. Fallouts dialogue functioned perfectly well. You see that same dialogue system in fo2, planescape, kotor, kotor II, icewind dale, icewind dale 2, baldurs gate, baldurs gate 2, and a deeply similar one in oblivion, skyrim, fo3 and fo:nv. There's a reason we kept that dialogue system for so long, a box is more versatile, allows more options, and is easier to navigate than a dialogue wheel. It actually "just works". There's no reason to change it now.

    But... Too much reading!
    Fallout 4 was aimed at console players and many of those don't want to read, they want to shoot things in the face and collect the loot.

    I think you're underestimating console players. After all, New Vegas is as much beloved by console gamers as it is by PC gamers. Honestly, I think it boils down to fallout 4's running theme of improving presentation. Make the power armour look better, make the animations more fluid, make enemies dig, make the dialogue look more fluid, etc while everything behind the massively upgraded surface downgrades remarkably.

    Notice I said "many" not "all".
    Also I was using Bethesda logic. They based Fallout 4 systems on which games were popular back then (they admit they got inspiration for their systems from Minecraft and DOOM) and those games are not known for their dialogue/text.

    One will not be a console player if he play a game is because of the writing in it, New Vegas is just kinda got the right balance about words and action to please those console players.

    They focus more on marketting than on making the game, as what matter is the units sold on day one. Those numbers depending on their marketing abilities and not the content of their games. You can't advertize writting. The quality of your writting doesn't matter on your trailer or on your merchandizing.

    Bethesda will continue to do the least amount of work for the most money, and their fans will be blind to it.

    I think they will leave one option "yes", that's why they can be even more lazy and not bother with recording different lines for the same thing.

    Now you can roleplay as a Carl, who says yes to everyone! See that synthetic nightkin behemoth? You can ride it!

    ... I hate bethesda.

    Why can they reinvent the box though without voiced protagonists and dumb choices. I personally prefer the box but I am sure you can actually change it without losing everything.

    What did people think about the witcher dialogue ? At time it does't list everything you'll say but I liked timed choices where good but maybe every choises should of had a timer although that might of lead to too much confusion

    I have two thoughts on where it could go.
    One is somehow optimistic and the other is sadly... very cynical.

    Optimism is first, it's best to leave with disappointment...
    Maybe they saw how unhappy people were with the system in F4 and decide to revamp it for their next game. I don't really see it happening, but it seems even our good buddy Todd understands how disappointing F4 was for everyone. And if they get Chris Avellone in to do some work on the writing, it may save the Dialogue System.

    The cynical one however... they saw how successful Fallout 4 was in regards to sales (even through I would say the opposite as it A. took Bethesda down from their throne of GOTY which was given to a better RPG and B. F4 has had no lasting impact like F3 did) and they dumb it down even more in order to market it to a wider audience to rank in more cash.
