strange error on windows 10

IntLessThan4

First time out of the vault
i am using windows 10 x64 bit. i have been playing fallout 2 conversion mods a lot on this machine, for years. No problems. suddenly out of the blue, no matter where i put a conversion fallout 2 file like Fallout yesterday ( the game won't even start now. no pop ups, nothing.) or fallout resurrection ( i get a pop up error saying " could not load DirectX" " this program requires windows 95 with directx 3.0a or later or windows NT version 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or greater.") Any fixes guys? Any help is appreciated.

most probably because of your nicknmae ;p

though in all seriousness.. i'm pretty sure you use standard windows defender antivirus, and for a certain reason if windows antivirus is allowed to delete potentially risky files, it probably deleted your sfall's ddraw.dll, the most crucial part of sfall that does indeed pull some hacker-like stunts in order to do what it claims to do, so in theory windows defender just does it's job as intended, though the question is do you want to have it deleted?

yep, heard that one before. no, its not windows defender. on a freash install of fallout resurrection for example, i still got the direct x error. i changed nothing, i only pressed save and play. then i got the error.

Do you have downloaded & installed directX end user runtime?
if not then you at least must have certain directX libraries present in your resurrection folder you probably need either four or two depending on sfall version you use ( f it's recent you should only need two, if it's the 3.7.3 that vanilla resurrection comes bundled with originally, you'll need four)..

either way install directX end user runtime..
the fact your windows contains newer DirectX 12, does not mean it contains all the previous versions of DirectX libraries..

directX end user runtime does just that adds the missing directX libraries to your system. try this first, and if it doesn't help we'll proceed further.

The installer does not work with direct x already on system. Can you please name, link or upload the 4 files directly?

Never mind, but that would help anyone else that read this having the same problem. I installed the direct x user runtime redist june 2010. Now I have a new problem:

A popup says:
FALLOUT2 - Application Error: The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142) Click OK to close the application.

Any solutions to this?

ok now after re-try o click the .exe, i am getting the old error message agian for resurrection, and fallout 1.

And no response for fallout yesterday, last hope, fallout sanora, fallout nevada.

Fallout 2 works fine.

how do you install theese games?
by fallout 1 do you mean actual fallout1 or fallout EtTu? if you mean fallout1 do you instal anything on top of it? like FIXT or at least Crafty's sfall, or is it a pure fo1 install..

i'm asking, because everything besides Fo2 requires changes in fallout2.cfg
Fo:EtTU requires proper paths to Fo2's critter.dat and master.dat set, and also some of Fo1 master.dat stuff needs to be unpacked into the modfolder with specifically prepaded tool for that task.

Resurrection uses a custom hex edited executable, and running it with fallout2.exe causes prroblems

yesterday,Nevada and Sonora use custom executable name. if you use default Fallout2.exe it may not work..

as for Fo: Last Hope i have no idea what's wrong..

are you absolutely sure you install the mods in the recommended way? a.k.a the mod is in a subfolder within fallout2 root folder?

yes all mods are installed correctly. I was playing the fallouts just until about 2 weeks ago. They were running fine. Fallout tactics and fallout 2 ( orgional from cd. ) is running beautifully even from custom directiores on a diffrent machine. It was a pure fallout 1 install. I followed all steps, ran great. 2 weeks ago, all except mentioned not running / not running and has the error. Would there be some sort of conflict with a " open with auto set to something? any other ideas on how to fix this error?

I think the time has come for an inspection of your fallout instllations..

it has occured to me that since Microsoft's March monthly update something fishy has been happening with native fallout installations.. namely windows starts auto launching non sfall driven fallouts in compatibility mode which it autoconfigures.. misst be a part of Microsoft's scheme of forcing AI down the throat of those who do not want it.. and the AI is overzealous and starts detecting old programs, and tends to launch them in compatibility mode, and hence once marvelously working fallout games have now been fucked by AI tampering with them..

TL ; DR

check your installs and make sure you're using latest sfall builds, as running the game without one is going to give you errors..
You must educate yourself on how to update sfall from whthin a fallout release, to most recent version ( it's not as easy as copy&paste& overwrite everything).

with a skip in my step and hope in my heart i re installed everything, updating it all. Following all directiosn to the letter and..... nope still the same.

One thing comes to mind; pardon if this doesn't apply directly to your case, but... All versions of Windows after XP are beyond paranoid, and play havoc with early software that assumes a level of freedom not allowed by Vista and later versions.

Specifically the cavalier installation of old software into the Programs (x86) directory—and the permissions required.

So when I install Fallout (and most older software games and tools) I make a dedicated Games or Tools folder for these programs, and they have less issues with the Windows OS.

C:\games\Fallout\

*GoG and Steam versions might be exceptions, if they have taken steps to ensure that it works with modern versions of Windows.

in ddraw.ini set

;Set to 1 to enable sfall debugging mode
Enable=1

start the game and paste the contents of sfall-log.txt somewhere like pastebin, just to see if sfall is even loaded.

besides man i did not want you to re-install stuff and call it a day but rather *inspect* what you have inside those folders.

i don't know who's giudes you actually follow, but chances are given it's internet after all, that you've stumbled on a guide of a person with actual IntLessThan4, and i'm not talking of you or your nick here, but of some actual idiot on the internet of which there are plenty...

can you point me in the right direction for all 3 total story conversion installs?
how about:
let's start from: You dropping a screenshot of your total conversion root folders here, and i'll take a look on them huh?

if i find some issues i'll inform you of them, and if i don't i'll screenshot my game folder plus details i find relevant, and post them here

ok?
