How to get a laser pistol in the early game?

I've recently decided to re-run this game, and found it weird I can't steal a laser pistol from the quartermaster after the first mission. Should I just lay his worthless, greedy butt down with superstimpacks, or is there some other way to obtain such a cool early-game weapon?
P.S. Super-Stimming him have proven pointless. For some reason, brotherhood ranks can't be looted this way, but only through the combat.

Seems like a 1.27 version issue that I'm unable to pickpocket the quartermaster of his gun. A shame really. Perhaps I'll find my way around it in the resource files someday. :)
 
You can steal a laser pistol from any scribe. I got it with a Steal skill of 80+, but not on the first try.

I recently read from a youtube comment that when non-hostile NPCs "detected" one of your sneaking team member, they'd put their weapon back in the inventory for you to steal. I tested it with vanilla v1.27 and a save game after mission 1, and sure enough it worked! Mind is blown.
