    Lack of imagination. Also, they filmed 2 and 3 together. Might have looked awkward with "Back 2 the Future" followed by "Back 3 the Future."

    It's because the "fad" of using numbers for words in movie titles only started to appear 10-15 years later. XD

    Back then the industry standard was to just put the number after the title. I guess people were more critic of using proper words instead of replacing them with the number, back then. Don't want to look like someone is too dumb to spell "to" properly. Or something. XD

    Risewild beat me to it, but I think the fad started in 1995 with "SE7EN" (a mere 6 years after "BttF2"). I clearly remember people actually being impressed with the way it was spelled, how clever it was and what have you. After "SE7EN" you started to see it everywhere. Like really everywhere, not only in movie titles.
