Again, the Vault experiments were conducted in order to test the affects of potential hazards during space travel. Gas leaks seem like a valid circumstance to test.

The point is that too many stories end like this. It's just bad story writing(especially in a wasteland), as we all can agree Fallout 4 is full of.
