Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art

Context, Oerjeke, context. People didn't go see Shakespeare's plays and Puccini's operas for art appreciation, but to get entertained. Our sensibilities are different from those of Shakespeare's or Puccini's contemporaries, so we are more entertained by Avatar and Transformers than by Othello...

Our hard drives will never turn floppy again... :(

http://www.examiner.com/x-16352-Japan-Headlines-Examiner~y2010m4d24-Sony-to-discontinue-35-inch-floppy-disk-in-Japan :( This is the definite end of another great era in the history of computers. Well, that is not entirely true, as for most of us that era ended long ago. I personally fully...

Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art

I suppose Puccini's operas and Shakespeare's plays should be viewed mainly as entertainment as well, then? Good to know.

    MoO on GOG!!!

If they call it Journey to the Center of Arcanum and get Brian Mitsoda to work it, I'm buying it. My rant was directed against GOG in general, the mention of MoO only triggered it. So you could say I've been off-topic all along. :postviper:

Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art

I can't say I disagree with his reasoning. The only constitutive element that is unique to games is gameplay, and I don't see how even well-designed gameplay could be considered art. On the other hand, it is true that games incorporate elements of other arts, such as literature, drama and...

    MoO on GOG!!!

Stop right there. You are equating legality with morality. Ask yourself this - if people started downloading abandonware games en masse, what negative consequences would that have? I can't think of any. On the other hand, I can think of considerable beneficial effects, as continuing interest...

    MoO on GOG!!!

Oh, yeah? Who will stop me? The ghost of the defunct company? I could climb on top of the Eiffel tower and shout about all the abandonware games I "pirated", and other than a potential public disturbance charge, not a damn thing would happen to me, legally speaking. Why? Because nobody cares...

    MoO on GOG!!!

Downloading abandonware titles is piracy in the same way going through the contents of a public landfill is theft. If a digital product is unattainable legally and the company that created it no longer exists, then it is irrational to perceive any moral or legal wrongs in the act of downloading...

What's the worst video game you've ever played?

Interesting as a study of how many plotholes you can fit into a story without giving the player stupidity-induced hemorrhage?

What's the worst video game you've ever played?

Fun like watching a retarded person ram headfirst into a wall repeatedly?

What's the worst video game you've ever played?

It's difficult to compare them on design points due to extreme simplicity (bordering on non-existence) of the Witcher's roleplaying elements. The Witcher does have superior art direction, though.

    Infinity Wards is dead

He's absolutely right. At least EA risks releasing a new and original game every now and then, while Activion... well... In case you're wondering, one of the games the above quote refers to (that Activision "didn't pick up") is Tim Schafer's Brütal Legend. It was published by EA, incidentally.

What's the worst video game you've ever played?

That's pretty much where DA:O wipes the floor with NWN2 (and every other Aurora Engine game), incidentally. I have many complaints regarding the game's design, but I nonetheless consider it fundamentally sound, as opposed to NWN2's, which is fundamentally unsound and unsalvageable. Both games...

What's the worst video game you've ever played?

For most people, a game's "badness" is not measured on some absolute scale, but rather as the disparity between their expectations (usually influenced by the universal affirmative opinion of the game) and their own experience with it. Halo is by no means a bad shooter, yet it is disliked by PC...

What's the worst video game you've ever played?

IIRC I played Daikatana at a friend's birthday party. He got it as a gift from another friend... Worst... birthday present... ever! :D

Shadow of the President Prevents Air Travel

Okay, so maybe I'm trolling... a bit. The theory that I espouse is actually proposed in an Economist article from 2007 (Economist being probably the most unabashedly Russophobic mainstream magazine out there) and it's become my new favorite conspiracy theory. I do believe that former security...

Command and Conquer : Rest in peace

I played it a little back in '97. As I recall it was a fairly standard C&C clone with some cool units (mammoths with mounted turrets FTW) and an unbelievably retarded name.
