Which version are you using? If it's the Steam version your files might have been "updated" (messed up). Without more information I can only suggest the obvious: reinstall the game and the RP patch (keep your saved games) and if you are using the Steam version make sure you disable automatic...

In that case check out Quake Live if you haven't already, it's inferior to Q3 IMO (slower, no gore, no custom levels, no mods,...)but it's very active, more addictive than Jet and free. Also play DoomRL an awesome gratis roguelike: http://doom.chaosforge.org/
