Perhaps your savegame, or something else, has been somewhat corrupted? Have you tried reinstalling everything from scratch to see if that helps?

So far it's a prequel campaign with maybe 5 or so missions (plus tutorial missions). The parts where you have to travel long distances through hyperspace gets sort of monotonous, but the combat is okay (in my opinion, anyway). I thought it was a rather challenging, but then I am not very good at...

I found Trust GM-2500 to be really nice in X-Wing Alliance, and it cost me maybe 30€ or so :)
