It's not an optional mode at all, the game always tells you that the quest will be over with all progress lost, should the dark rot reach Senua's head.
AFAIR, the turret console has a two-tier skill check (Science, probably?) the first one letting you disable the turrets and the second one letting you reprogram them to attack Horrigan. Not sure if that is accurate, I'd have to check.
Indeed. "Everything is awesooooome" vs. "Everything is pretty good, I guess." I still liked it fine but it couldn't hold up to the standards set by Lego movie. I did love the nods to all former Batman movies and Adam West in particular.

tl;dr of this trash post: game reviewer likes but isn't 150% in love with a game I deem perfect and I DON'T LIKE IT. WHY ARE PEOPLE ALLOWED TO HAVE OPINIONS ON THINGS? I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO AGREE WITH ME. I'm an imbecile who didn't even notice the author isn't a "he".
And characters that looked like a human-ish skin draped over wobbling, boneless sacks of meat and gas.
Definitely a fun game back in the day but it has not aged well at all.
