No, the bandits were a group who'd taken up residence in some guy's castle and taken his family captive. This guy just sat there whilst he and his five or so friends told me to sneak in the back entrance and unlock the gate. There were more bandits guarding the back gate than at the front.

Onto the castle idea, Europe already has a vast wealth of castles and fortifications that are in relatively in good nick. Now, I'm sure if the bombs fell that most of these would be swept away, but the castles out in the countryside could well still exist.
