    The Decline of Obsidian?

Wow, he seems to be letting it all out once and for all now. He's been posting there for hours on end.

RPGs can become much more “radical” but hardcore players are “resistant to change”, says Obsidian

It's the mistaken general notion that choice and stat improvement alone make an RPG. That's the problem with moder RPG's. Getting to do more damage with your shooting or having the teasiest bit of choice in something narrative related is considered an RPG, when it's really much more complex than...

    The Bethesda-fication of Fallout 4

It's a nice video, but to be honest, a lot of that is just stating the obvious yet again, mostly about quest design and narrative while talking about gameplay seemed to be left in the marginal intentionally, and at the end of even excused with the notion of who made the "better FPS" out of it...

RPGs can become much more “radical” but hardcore players are “resistant to change”, says Obsidian

There are arguments that use concrete logic within the context of the subject matter and then there are arguments that use personal feeling. "it's just not very engaging gameplaywise" is the latter, and kinda seemed pointless where you put it. I wasn't arguing for "I like this, so should you"...

RPGs can become much more “radical” but hardcore players are “resistant to change”, says Obsidian

Indeed. There's a world of possibilities there I've waited for some brave company to explore. Obsidian always seemed like the ideal candidate for that, but it would seem they're now wanting to strive away from them for some reason I can't really figure out.

RPGs can become much more “radical” but hardcore players are “resistant to change”, says Obsidian

This is an opinion. Yes, you do. The key here a rogue, a hunter, a what ever. If the stats didn't simulate that to different degrees as per how you play, you would, just like you would in Thief or Half Life, and then the experience of that rogue or hunter would always be the same. There'd be...

If you were to build a Fallout like Game....

Obviously I'd start with emulating the original games as far as I could; cavalier oblique perspective, TB combat, point'n click gameplay. I'd add combat features, but generally I'd hold on to the simplistic trappings to not make combat too heavy handed; I'd broaden the skill system and ramp up...

RPGs can become much more “radical” but hardcore players are “resistant to change”, says Obsidian

No, I don't think I am. What you seem to be advocating is replacing character stats with pure action and acting out the features. This is basically just an avatar simulation. A game like that might be good, but it'd not make a very good RPG. What is missed there is the depiction (and gameplay)...

RPGs can become much more “radical” but hardcore players are “resistant to change”, says Obsidian

You can. You can "play a role" even without a game if you want to; even an empty box of matches will do just fine if you're up to it. But the roleplaying'd happen in a far lesser depth in an RPG since you'd lack a lot of the progressive communication between you and the game, which is what the...

Should I Start Playing on Hardcore Mode?

I couldn't play without HC mode on. I tried once and it just didn't work. The added systems weren't really much in the big picture, they weren't punitive and in some cases uneffective altogether, but the effect was enough that without them the game was just a sad pretense that would've been left...

RPGs can become much more “radical” but hardcore players are “resistant to change”, says Obsidian

I don't quite understand what he means with "more radical" if he wants to cut down character stats and just condense RPGness to that of being an interactive visual novel in a CYOA form. What's radical about that? Action games with stories exist already and are being made as we speak. Does he...

Fallout 4 is a good game. It's just incomplete.

Might be, but I did respond to a quote about why a voiced protagonist is bad. Not to one about the quality of the lines written for the protagonist.

Fallout 4 is a good game. It's just incomplete.

So what? It doesn't matter (here, with the point I was making) if there are this or that many responses or if some of them are generic or not. The point was about them being spoken out loud by someone who might not reflect at all the players vision (or desire) of his character, and who is never...

Fallout 4 is a good game. It's just incomplete.

Does such explanation exist that you wouldn't find silly? Would it be enough to say that a voiced protagonist robs the ownership of the character and the interpretation of his/her expressions from the player? Meaning that even though you might have some say on how to play, it's not "your"...

Name reasons you thought Fallout 3 was better than New Vegas

I liked the repair mechanic and lack of iron sights in Fallout 3 better than their counterparts in NV. Those are the only things I thought 3 did better than NV.

What are new games your excited to play this year or the next?

Battletech, PoE 2, Phoenix Point, Bard's Tale 4, Disco Elysium (formerly No Truce with the Furies), Copper Dreams. Possibly Cyberpunk 2077 if CDPR goes all Bethesda with reveal-release gap like they implied and if the game actually has any merit to it that would be worth a purchase ("Witcher 3...
