“Empty” Saves on Fallout 2?

Yunman

First time out of the vault
(Really sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong board, I kinda got myself into a bit of a pickle and panicked.)

So, today I was playing FO2. I don’t know if it would help anyone to know this, but up to this point, I had gotten Cassidy, SkyNet, and Lenny as my companions. I decided to get Marcus as a fourth companion (Being as I had 10 Charisma), so I went to Broken Hills. As most people would, I saved my game immediately. But then, just as the Interplay Logo was about to stop spinning, the game froze.

I tried everything. I waited ten minutes for the game to load. Nothing. I opened up Task Manager, waited five minutes for that to load. I watched as Task Manager opened up on my Desktop and waited for another five minutes. Nothing. Finally, I decided to reset my laptop.

After logging back in, I went to go open up FO2, but when I went to go open up my first save slot (the one I saved in before the game froze), there was nothing. Just completely blank data. Just the Vault 13 logo and the text “EMPTY”.

tl;dr: I saved my game in the first slot, it froze. I rebooted my laptop, and the save for my first slot was gone.

So, is there any way I can fix this? Or is my precious save file sleeping with the angels? I’ve heard of some mods that can fix things, but I haven’t read up on them as I never thought that this could happen to me.

If there’s any help you guys can deliver, please do. I’m willing to do anything.

I'd guess the main save.dat is either corrupted or lost, so the game doesn't think the save slot has any data.

Let's say that, theoretically, the save.dat isn't missing. If I wanted to find it, how would I go about doing so?

You can check your Fallout2\Data\SAVEGAME\SLOT## folder to see if save.dat and other .sav files are there.
If save.dat exists, there's a high chance it's corrupted. I don't know if there's a way to "recover" it unless you have a backup.

Try rename it to save.dat and see if the game can load it. If yes, everything should be fine.
Managed to rename it, opened up Fallout 2. Game Save was corrupted. Went back into the folder, made a copy of SAVE.BAK and the new save.dat file. Game Save was still corrupted.

Oh well, unless there's no other possible way to fix this, I guess there's nothing else I can do now but restart from one of my older saves or replay the game entirely.

Thanks for the help!
