2d gameplay with 3d graphic game makes me wonder...

While checking the game trailer of Terminator Salvation (which looks pretty much like Gears of War with Terminator setting) and search through wiki about its developer, Grin, I noticed they have recently done Bionic Commando Rearmed, a remake of classic NES 8-bit title.

What makes me more felt fascinating are the comments such as this one

'This looks like a successful marriage between old school, side-scrolling goodness and nicely refined graphics. I think developers need to get out of this MUST-MAKE-EVERYTHING-3D slump. This game is a perfect example of how awesome graphics can be applied to a 2D environment.'

which reminds me of Fallout 3. Bethesda has changed the gameplay element and turning it into an abomination by naming it an official sequel to the previous game. With the current trend of pushing graphic, I can't think of any games offer a good game play value.
Not to mention many games suffering the same fate. I can only think of X-com now because posting a msg at 1am is exhausting, and this thread might go to the big green vat room. :ugly:

That looks pretty cool. Another thing that developers seem to forget is that style can overcome pretty graphics any day. Look at World of Goo. It doesn't have photo realistic graphics, but it has the charm that most games simply lack.

So much charm and character, a high pixel count simply is not needed.

Edit: whoops that's actually not a 2d game, but the basic ideas remain. Super realistic != good graphics.

I'd say that Okami is a great example of how style trumps photorealism and high poly counts, that game looks amazing. I'd put down TF2 here too but the system requirements for that are no slouch (guess it has a high poly count?) but it also shows how style trumps photorealism.

Back to the topic at hand, I totally agree. It's one of the things I hate about Street Fighter IV, it's a 2D game but has 3D graphics for no reason (doesn't add anything and I personally think that 2D looks better). Guilty Gear (until 2) was the last 2D fighting game with 2D graphics that I can think of. There are still some Japanese games that are 2D, Atlas and NISAmerica publish pretty much all of them in the west (and many combine sprites with 3D environments) but again, I think sprites are wonderful and something of a lost art.

2D has been relegated to handhelds (which I doubt will last too much longer), indies, and online distributed games. It'll be sad to see it die.

I've never been a big fan of 2D side scrollers, but damn that looks fun.

Totally forgot the Worms series! Fantastic games with tons of charm and character. Hehe, imagine a photorealistic worms game  . I highly recommend this turn based 2d game.

What you didn't mention was that at least Capcom cares enough for the fans of 2D graphics to have made the 2D Hi-Def version of Street Fighter 2.

Also no one mentioned Viewtiful Joe yet. It's a 2D platform brawler with 3D graphics. It zooms in and out as you are playing (with a camera that accommodates the fighting as well as doing nice flashy close up for the special moves).

There is another sequel coming out next year. The transition is similar to Grand Theft Auto series which started as a 2D-top-down-view action game to what we seen today, a third person action game, which retain the same game-play mechanic.

Wish we will see more similar move by developer. Remake is always welcome provide it doesn't screw up the game play element.

As much as I like that they made that, it's not for people who love 2D graphics, it's for SF2 fans and SSF2T tournament players but excludes the PC. They also made Super Puzzle Fighter HD Remix which is also 2D, both it and SSF2THDR are Sirlin projects, and MM9. The one thing in common with all of those games is that they are all bought via console online services and more of cheap side-projects intended for good cash flow, which I have no problem with. What I have a problem with is it seems that they are going away from releasing 2D games as standard sized projects or for PC.

All that said, I really like Capcom and I generally trust their projects, though they aren't perfect (Devil Kings for example).

That does not retain the same gameplay mechanics of Bionic Commando but it looks like a lot of fun. I'd say it looks more like what the Metal Gear series did when it became Metal Gear Solid, it became very different with some clear ties and influences from previous games in the franchise but generally taking a new gameplay direction. That said, Bionic Commando is fun but it was never as fun as Contra, which I've heard has just been terrible since Hard Corps, for me. Cheers for it being for the PC as well, I'm liking Capcom's full multiplatform approach! I believe that this is their second, with DMC4 being their first. Hope the trend continues.

Yoshinori Ono says it's because he felt they wouldn't be able to surpass SF3. The lack of pixel artists might also be the reason - fewer 2D games means fewer 2D artist. You now have more detail on the characters and animations running at up to infinite frames per sec, in any case.

Well, in full 3D, retaining them isn't much of an option. 3D also brings some new possibilities, though. I'm hoping for Turrican-esque large, explorable levels.

Capcom develops all their games for PC first, actually. They are ported to consoles afterwards.
