A good Gunner Character build? (not a sniper)

Mephistopheles

First time out of the vault
Hi everybody! I'm new here, nice to meet you :D

I wonder if anyone could please give me a strong build of a Gunner Character which is not a sniper.... Stats, Perks, Skills (although I think that I know which skills are needed, just 150% of Small Guns and the rest points are for Speech and Lock Pick?) and Traits- The first trait is Gifted (so INT must be 10) but I have no idea whats the second trait...

Thanks!

Look into Per's Guide, some juicy builds there, all along with explanation and playing style.

EDIT: Ahhh yeah just found it, he uses the trait Fast Shot which I personally dont like....Is there a place with diffrent builds for my request?

Fast Shot is best for characters who use burst a lot (Big Gunners especially). Also when you get the Sniper perk you'll practically always get a critical hit which is *not* the case if you make aimed shot. Thus Fast Shot is very nice to have.

10 INT is somewhat of an overkill even with Gifted... 7-8 gives pretty much all dialogue options (for the rare case it doesn't you can use Mentats) and you'll swim in skill points anyway. Besides, there's a *very* good reason to never raise INT over 9 for a starting character...

He also points out that you can take Finesse and Mutate! it into Fast Shot later ingame

Go for Small Frame for the agility, or Sex Appeal if you're a feamle character.

Alternatively, you can take some unimportant Trait like Drug Reliant or Fast Metabolism and Mutate! it to Fast Shot later (once you get Sniper)

Firstly thanks to all of you! :)
But I still dont know... I really dont like the Fast Shot thing (altough that perhaps thats a mistake of me...) and the Small Frame too which I just dont like the idea of RPing a short/very thin person (dont mean to offend anyone)... Any ideas or you all got desperate of me? :P

EDIT: Wait! :D You got me! maby I should take the Fast Shot!
But still... what would be the stats traits and perks for this build?

(SPOILER ALERT):

Highest ST requirement for weapons is 7.

Since you can get +5 (6 if you waste a perk) to ST you don't need more than 2 in ST, but that would make the beginning a bit too tough, so I'd go for 4-6 in ST.

PE. You'll want Sniper which requires 8 in PE. You'll get +1 (+2 if you waste a perk), so you don't really need more than 7.

EN. If you take a level or two of Lifegiver you'll swim in HPs, if not, well, it doesn't really matter that much. I usually go with 4. If you want Toughness you can always use Buffout...

CH. Depends on your character. You can get +1 and an additional +1 with shades (and another +1 if you waste a perk). Do you want many followers? I usually have between a CH of 6-8 in the start of the game but I lose 2 due to the implants (I almost always choose to take them) but the +2 I get makes up for it. If you don't care about diplomacy or friends and like being ugly as fuck you can drop it to hell...

IN. Since you're using Gifted I'd at least get 6. No point getting it higher than 9 though. I usually go with 7-8.

AG. 10. You'll want lots of APs to shoot as many times as possible. 9 if you feel for wasting a perk.

LU. Sniper perk is dependant on high Luck. I usually start with 6 since you can get +2 to it (+3 if you waste a perk).

Traits:

Gifted
Fast Shot
Small Frame is very useful but if I RP I don't take it (since I'm not particularly small in RL)...

Perks:

Sniper
Better Criticals
Bonus ROF
x2 Action Boy

Toughness is nice to have but shouldn't be taken more than once or twice if you plan to box and/or use implants and use PA/APA (90% is max DR).

Lifegiver is useful if you're playing on Tough (or was it Rough) difficulty.

Awareness is useful but not quite as essential as everyone and grandma claims...

Bonus Ranged Damage is useful if you use high ROF weaponry (x2 Bonus RD makes +160 damage with Avenger Minigun). If you'll be using one shot weapons Living Anatomy is better.

You also did ask for skills...

Small Guns is the best combat skill. Big Guns is great in combination with Fast Shot since they cannot be aimed anyway...

Lockpick is always good.

Speech gives plenty of XPs and alternative solutions.

You mentioned those skills anyway but a couple of more which are useful:

Doctor. There are a couple of quests (or miniquests) related to the Doctor skill. Plus it's nice to have when you get crippled in the middle of nowhere...

Repair & Science. There are a couple of quests related to both skills but you can up them to 91% by reading...

Traps. There is a quest which requires some points in Traps but it's nice to have handy in the few places where there are traps. Hardly essential though since traps aren't particularly lethal in the game (which is a shame!).

Thanks for all your effort for helping me!
Do you know how many percents are enough for Speech and Lock Pick? (I was told elsewhere and read too that for Small Guns 150% is enough)

EDIT: (for Silencer) Sorry, will do next time

I can't recall ever needing much over 100% for Lockpick nor Speech, but I have never checked what the actual requirements are for each dialogue... Per's guide does state the requirements though.

There is no definite answer to how much skill points in Small Guns is enough. When you hit things in dark from a reasonable distance I'd say it's enough. Some weapons have modifiers to them and are easier to hit with.

I would recommend playing the game and learn out as much as possible on your own though. Much more satisfying than reading walkthroughs or getting advise from others. I didn't read Per's guide before I had finished the game around 20 times or so. After that I learned a thing or two from his guide (for example how to get Captain of VC and how to get that PipBoy Medical Enhancer).

Since practically every build except the ones that are intentionally built to suck are able to complete the game I'd recommend just trying out different types of characters until you find something that works...
