A mod utilising Baldur's Gate II Engine

First time out of the vault
Hm. Actually embarassing how n00bish this question is, but i'm a late comer to the series, and enjoyed the aesthetics of FOT too much to go back to the other 2, however, FOT is clearly not a real RPG... which sucks.

Now, i was looking into mods for FoT, to basically create fallout 1 or 2 or something similar using the FOT graphics/combat engine, but the problem as i understand it is a a lack of any kind of conversation tree. Now would it be feasible to create a new fallout using the baldurs gate (II) engine, thus merging the uber falloutness with, what seemed on the surface, the fairly similar BGII?

Sorry if this is TOTALLY retarded. Thanks for any help dudes 8).

Er, yes, that is slightly retarded. And that's probably one of the nicer replies you could have got here. The AD&D and SPECIAL systems just aren't compatible in any way. If you tried implementing rifles as "bows" and skills as I don't know what, you'd get a horrible hybrid too repulsive to contemplate. Post-apoc on the surface, maybe, but never Fallout.

Exporting Fo2 graphics would only be a matter of grunt work. Bg was scripted with Lua, which means you can add dialogue trees -which were already there, simply they weren't a main feature. According to the little knowledge I posses LUA could probably be used to implement skills... At the cost of tinkering with what is hardcoded in the engine... Which means bugs galore...
As Per pointed out he different ruleset would be the main problem. And that's not a small one...
If you really have a problem with the original graphics (and if you're making it you really whish Fo had a broader palette and higer resolution) then please tinker with/support the FIFE engine project.
Merry Christmas.

Okay, so I was just looking round the web, and Van Buren DID utilise the infinity engine... just check the screenshots/data on wiki. ( http://www.nma-fallout.com/fallout3/fo3-vault1.jpg ). Therefore i don't understand why this isn't possible. Is it merely a question of it would be too much work, rather than it wouldn't be possible?

Sorry to keep pushing it but fallout using infinity would be HOT. Those screenies looked painfully cool.

Thanks, Redbear

Please explain.

It would require rewiring the engine to the point that it would be easier to make a new one from scratch, and they usually have entire teams of paid programmers doing that. So yes, it is possible. Are you going to do it?

To my knowledge, Fallout 3 did not utilize the Infinity engine BG2 used, as Fallout 3 was in full 3D and BG2 was nicely animated sprites.

Actaully if you were going to try this then using the Icewind dale 2 engine would be a little bit better as it uses the AD&D 3 edition rules, which at least have 'feats' which are sort of like 'perks'.

everything else would be wrong still though. Of course if you were going to try and convert the rules you might as well use the neverwinter knights or KOTOR engine they would be easier to mod.
