K, first off, yello everyone, first time posting on the general discussion board, why did I mention that? Heck, I don't know. Anywho, onto the question. I remember reading a post on here a while back about pc tweaking, to get your pc to stop crashing quite as much. I searched for the topic, but couldn't find it. My pc crashes about... let's see, 4 times a day, mainly because of MP3 problems. So, can anyone point me out to some info on pc tweaking? I run a small server so crashes are a bitch.

Well, I found that when I decreased the speed of my RAM from Turbo to Fast, my system stability went up like 200%. This especially applies if you have an ATI video card on an AMD system.

Using a K6-2 500, with a veryyyy old video card, and about the ram settings, I assume it's done under BIOS, but does it slow your pc down much? stability is nice, but I'm going slow enough as it is with only 32 megs of ram

32?!?!?! No wonder your system is so slow. Get *at least* 64 megs of RAM (I've got 128 megs) and you will FEEL the difference in the speed of your system. RAM is the single most effective way to improve your system. Maybe that's your problem.

Heh, what can I say, I patched this thing together with $500, my speed really isn't a problem, it's the crashes, but if I downclock my ram or whatever, then I'm going to have a problem with speed. I'm starting to think, that since my problems is with MP3 crashes, that it's my soundcard, I have all the newest drivers and Direct X, and I even reinstalled my soundcard, but it still keeps crashing...

Yeah I never have problems with my soundcard (SB16 ISA), probably because it was made a while ago and old stuff seems to be better made and tested.

Still, you should get more RAM. I have to wonder if you can even set the speed of your RAM. Mine is PC100 RAM, if yours is not, it probably isn't the problem.

It's not "Downclocking", it's having it run under factory specs.

Go to BIOS setup and have it "auto-set" the RAM speed. The difference in performance will be between 1 - 2%, i.e. you won't see it even if you're looking for it.

MP3's require *a lot* of system resources, so I wouldn't be surprised at all that the crashes *are* caused by too little memory.

Speaking of, what kind of crashes are you experimenting? Lockups, BSODs, Dr. Watsons, reboots, what?

Heh, well I know the term "downclocking" doesn't really apply to it, but it twas the only word I could think of. And crashes go a little something like this. Playing MP3, minding my own buisness, and my sound (which was a song) becomes this screeching buzzing noise through my speakers, and my entire pc is locked up, only way to recover is by hitting the reboot button.

If playing MP3s causes this problem then maybe your problem is your MP3 player. Which one are you using? Try uninstalling and reinstalling it, or if the problems persist get another MP3 player. Also, like Xotor said you should seriously consider buying more RAM. It not only speeds up your system, but will often make it more stable as well since windows will have more memory to work with.

>Which one are you using?

Winamp, Kjofol, and Sonique, they all crash in the same way, and I will be getting more ram on friday I believe, but I have a feeling that it won't help to stop my crashes

Welp folks, I'm imbaressed to say this, but I found the problem, and it should have been the first thing I thought of.... Windows
I installed Windows Me (available for free to anybody who wants it, dom_devore@hotmail.com) And my mp3 problems have stopped, although I got this friggin mouse problem now :P anywho, I appreciate all you guys' help, thanks.

Good luck with ME, it's even more unstable than Win98se.

That might be true for all users, the friend I got it off of, has been running his windows ME pc for 65 hours straight, which is like a record for longest running without crashes for a non NT windows OS that I've heard of. I've had my pc on for 21 hours now, and no crashes
