A request for a mod: Binoculars

Lokie

First time out of the vault
Would some one be willing to make a pair of binoculars for the game? I know you can use the sniper rifle to see far away, but you don't get one until you get a little ways into the game. i think any one exploring the wasteland would be greatly aided by a pair and you would think some would be left over from the war. they shouldn't be as powerful as the sniper scope, say 75%. and a binocular graphic around the edges of the screen(like you see in the movies) would be cool.(like two connected circles)

Any thought on this or if you got any better ideas or if it is possible would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds for me as very good idea. In fact I got my hands on sniper rifle very early in game and I use it gladly as a substitute of binoculars.

There are mods which make particular weapons unscoped [.44 Magnum and Blackhawk changed that way do not act like binoculars while RMB is pressed but act like any other pistol]. So maybe it would work the other way - some item could have this feature implemented.

Should be quite easy to implement: a sniper with ammo capacity of 0, binoculars skin, and a modified scope picture.

And reduced weight to almost zero. Perhaps someone could simply make a mod where you had a sniper rifle's scope (apart from the rifle itself) to watch through?

this would work i guess but i would really like to see two connected circles instead of one circle with a crosshair, ya' know.

i like tycn' s idea better

The real question is whether we can somehow have adjustable zoom levels. If it zooms in too much it becomes a pain to survey a larger area. If it zooms too little then it's not much good for anything at all. I suppose that even if you couldn't get adjustable zoom to work you could just make multiple identical Binoculars with different zoom levels and make them all a portion of the intended weight of the binocular to simulate having one binocular with different magnification levels.

Regardless of execution, I think most won't be able to see enemies in distance anyway (and that's what it is for, right?). Actors fade is in the way here, especially on lower-end hardware.

honestly, i would be happy with a zoom equal to maybe 75% of the zoom offered by the sniper scope.

as far as the weight goes, i think 2-3 pounds is plenty sufficient.

Same here. I think you don't need to see that far for this to be useful. After all you most likely will want it for surveying the terrain so a lower zoom and larger viewing area would likely be the most useful set up.

my sentiments exactly, thank you

Already being worked on by someone from the official forums, so keep an eye on F3Nexus for when it's ready (or those forums).

exclusively on low end hardware users, actually.

The actor fade is not a flat radius but it does look like one, it's just a render and priority ratio. saves more memory that way, i guess. For example, if you shut off the ai routines, and just start backing away from dogmeat, you'll always be able to see him. Far, far past the "max" distance you can see "strangers" from. I dont know what hte general ratio is for the actor fade slider thingy, but all the way up and you are not likely to actually notice them fading out.
