AC bonus from unused action points, who uses it?

Human Shield

First time out of the vault
Armour class is nice but it just a chance of hit or miss. Does anyone really save AP at the end to help dodge attacks? I sink all AP into attacks and movement.

I like the JA2 system of being able to save a fraction of your AP to be put into the next turn.

I use it very often. When I stand in an open space fighting a group of enemies I add the remaining points to armor class. Fighting in buildings is different: there I always try to reach a safe spot behind a wall or something so I use the remaining AP for movement. Then emerge, blast someone with bozar and hide back.

if you move instead of standing there, it costs them ap to get closer if they use melee weapons, which means less attacks, and if they use guns, their accuracy drops a good 5-10 % by your movement. I think that might be more valuable than the small AC bonus.

You have a point about the melee weapons but I don't think there's a much difference between standing three hexes away or five hexes away when the enemy carries a plasma rifle or other long range gun.

I'm w/lilfyffedawg on this one. The FO manual even pointed this out, but the FO2 manual omitted it. IIRC every hex the range increases means that youre enemies are 4% less likely to hit you, whereas every point of AC is only 1%. Then there's always the issue of range limitations, which is very important when dealing w/HtH weapons.

Incidentally, bearing in mind the 4% per hex vs. 1%/unused AP issue, this means that a character is less likely to be hit if he/she relies on "retrograde movement" (read: retreating) even when considering that a HtH fighter could rely on the HtH Evade Perk, which gives a 3%/unused AP. Maybe the F3 team should look into that. (I think they will, since JES has mentioned before that this is a pet peeve of his.)

Once I got about 100 AC and they hit me almost everytime they shoot ;/ sth must be wrong... it doesnt work it should

...I don't think the game engine was designed with near-100 AC characters in mind. When you press a mechanic way further than it is intended to be, things tend to get weird.

actually there is a small detail that matters.
If you move away from the enemy to go further from him, you end your turn facing with your back to the enemy, and I think that decreases the chance to dodge if not completely sets the chance to zero.
And another fact is that you are more likely to make a critical hit with your long range weapon if you standing at a longer range. Some sniper bonus I guess, but that works for your enemies also. The opposite of it is that you miss with rifles if you stand next to the enemy and your chance is 95 percent. They just push your rifle away.
That's all of my combat theory for now for the young, immature, wanderers of the wastes.

Is what you're saying true or are you just speculating here? IIRC, direction doesn't matter in combat, and I don't know where you get the other two from. It's been a while though, so I could be wrong...

As with everything else, it depends on the circumstances. First of all, I can't remember saving unused point for the AC bonus. I simply never did it. If I found early on that moving away would hinder my opponent's ability to get an extra hth attack, then I moved. If I faced a relatively weaker opponent, I usually stood there and shot/slugged it out with him simply because the battle wouldn't likely last very long and I wanted to make the most of my shots rather than hinder his.Anytime I could get my character to a choke point where only a few of the enemy could get a shot in on me or I would only have to face one melee attacker at a time, my first priority would be to get my character into position.

I need to start another game just for the hell of it.

I'm not sure 100 percent Ranpostgen, but I remember reading about facing the enemy in the manual of the first fallout. Otherwise there would be no need for a "turn" command. And I also never dodged anything facing my back to the enemy.

Another thing, if the position is taken into account, how the hell is it possible to shoot in the enemies' eyes if he is looking away?
