Adventures of Capitol Wastelanders

aac013

First time out of the vault
This game is using the unofficial Fallout Pnp SPECIAL system, based on the Fallout Universe with events that do not directly effect the series canon.
This is a campaign a few years old, in my hay-day as a GM. If this belongs in the RolePlaying board of Fanfic, feel free to move it, but I am just telling a finished story. Firstly, to introduce the characters:

A Chinese pre-war Ghoul, secretly a spy in his smooth-skin days, travels north from the Broken Isles into the Capital Wasteland, repairing and activating power generators to contact his fellow Chinese remnants across the entire American wasteland. Traveling only with his personally altered protectron, he stumbles across the strangest things he has ever seen in the wasteland.

Near the area, a slaver patrol, after a successful raid, are ambushed by a deathclaw. One slave, used as their under-prepared and unpaid bodyguard, makes a run for freedom, leaving his brother and the slavers to their obvious fate. Taking the persona of one of the slavers he once was under, the slave wanders the wasteland, hoping to never be caught with a collar around his neck again.

A good ways sound of the Capital Wasteland, a vault lets one a lone boy, telling him he is the only one bound to survive, and that the vault was bound to fail. On leaving, the Overseer that aloud his release destroyed the vault full of American undesirables that have been held there for the passed hundred years. The vault caves in, hiding whatever may be left of the vault forever in crumbling flames. The vault boy's back, singed, and memory scarred, forever forgetting his vault number.

An Enclave scientist done being spoon fed brahmin fumes takes his leave, telling his superiors that he wishes to investigate an explosion in the distance. Leaving with only his racism and pride, begins to understand that there is no such thing as a pure human.

The one rule in the wasteland, Capitol or Core, is to never travel alone. And by a strange string of circumstances, the four find themselves together to survive.

Doctor Daniel Bruce Banner

Doc Banner, as called by his "friends" is a white skinhead racist. Even within the Enclave, where "pure humans" are bred, he doesn't think it is pure enough. His best "friend" by fact is an example of his hatred, a black man named Jefferson who only befriended him because they both were at the same outpost. Banner's skills would probably be better-suited in a laboratory, but the C.O. in his zone considers him so much of a dick that he keeps him on animal research.

More about the character:
Doctor Banner is an enclave scientist and a skin head. While completely agreeing with the Enclave's viewpoint of "cleansing" all mutants off American soil, he does not agree with letting in "colored individuals," even if they are American by birth. While getting into many arguments with his superiors and cohorts, his unparalleled skill kept him from becoming a pile of goo. As bitter-sweet mission to survey the evolution of mutated creatures keeps him from further interacting with said "colored individuals". Doctor Banner is not only a medical professional, but also an excellent piloting and not too bad with energy weapons.

The Vault Boy

Vault-Tec before the great war had set aside a vast majority of vaults for experiments in favor of the Enclave, or what was the Enclave at the time. One very vault south of Washington D.C. was, as an experiment; filled with 50% of the population as the nation's "undesirables" in which includes the mentally or physically crippled, and the other 50% with above-average intelligent people. They were given no instructions, and the P.A. system day and night played childish music with the televisions looping random colors and shapes.

More about the character:
The Vault Boy is a rather "special" child from a vault that is no longer on the maps. This vault was once an enclave experiment, where they gathered half "normal" civilians and half individuals with "special needs". Over the course of 100 years, the "normal" dwellers developed a hierarchy to oversee the "special" ones. The "special" individuals consisted of people with mental retardation or lame limbs. Even without radiation, it appeared as if they were mutating. When the population of the "specials" began to overwhelm the "normals" the last of three overseers decided to chose his son, send him out into the world, and rid the world of these abominations. The son in question's mother was one of these "special" individuals. The boy from the vault left with only a baseball bat, a base ball, and a silver tongue.

Johnny Rockett

Born with his hometown assaulted by slavers, Johnny Rockett lived his entire life under the collar of one Reginald Wright, along with his brother Bobby Rockett. Bobby always made sure he took the bulge of the slaver's punishment to the Rockett brothers. After years under Reginald, the Rocketts were "assigned" as bodyguards to the slaves that Reginald had captured until they found their delivery to the Pitts, Paradise Falls, or even as far out as the Den.

More about the character:
Johnny was born with his hometown assaulted by slavers, his entire life under the collar of Reginald Wright. His brother, Bobby Rockett also under the slaver's belt. Despite being slaves, the two always looked out for each other. Bobby would often take the bulge of the slaver's punishment. After years under Reginald's rule, the Rocketts were "assigned" as bodyguards to the slavers. Being with slaves and slavers all his life, Johnny's traveled from the Pitt to Paradise Falls, through Legion territory and even as far out as the Den. Johnny grew up to learn the importance of his silver tongue, and who to point his rifle at.

V.A.L.M.O.N.T Unit

Versatile Artificial Living Machine Operative Nullifier Tank to anyone who asks what his name means, VALMONT is the Chinese's response to the Protectron. This robot has, instead of protection, a doctorate programing along with melee offensive capabilities. Specifically made to disguise itself as the American protectron and as a "backup" plan for any spy spotted by the government, giving the spy enough of a distraction so that he could escape with little notice. This specific VALMONT is actually the prototype of said series of Chinese technology.

More about the character:
The first successful A.I. developed by the Chinese, unfortunately has the attention span of a child. The A.I. was the first of the 21st century not to need an actual brain implanted to learn. This was Agent Shendou's saving grace when trying to pass the Chinese Spy Academy. V.a.l.m.o.n.t. is based off the American "protectron" design to blend in with other units while under cover in the United States. After the blast, and to defend against the giant insects and sea monsters near the Great 'Lanta By The Sea, Agent Shendou replaced its right arm with a Mr. Handy Buzz-saw. The prototype specialised in melee combat, first aid and medical expertise. V.a.l.m.o.n.t. stands for Versatile Artificial Living Machine Operative Nullifier Tank when vaguely translated from chinese.

Agent Shendou

Before the war, Shendou was employed as a Chinese spy, sent to recover American documents. Unfortunately for his timing, the day he "immigrated" into the United States, the Great War began, and in moments he found himself and the men he "worked" with either incinerated or ghoulified by what little shelter their one-story basement gave. After years of trying to contact the other Chinese "immigrates" they sent out search party after search party to see who had and hadn't survived the bombing. After their numbers fell below five, the search parties grew to numbers equal to one and a robot.

More about the character:
The C-Rank undercover chinese spy from before the war. Was near Atlanta in a spy shelter when the bombs dropped. The ventilation let in enough radiation to ghoulify him. The two other Chinese with him had given him the mission of re-connecting the phone lines of the East coast so they could contact other chinese parties. Shendou specialises in unarmed combat, repairing and engineering, and espionage. Unfortunately his strong chinese accent made it impossible to do any real espionage, only on the forces for his engineering abilities. Through the years after the bombs dropped, Agent Shendou had forgotten his true name, and most of his true identity. The only memory besides his chinese training, is the memory of his niece and nephew.

IF you are interested in knowing more about a situation or an interaction, I do remember more than I write. I am doing a quick overview and details can be edited in later much like the "More about the character:" I just added in now.

As always commentary and criticism on either my GMing style or writing is always welcome. I'll maybe make 3~5 posts a day just not to be overwhelming.

The first session begins with V.A.L.M.O.N.T. and Shendou traveling north after a many months away from Atlanta. So far they have been unsuccessful in contacting any other remnants of the Chinese military. Still, agent Shendou would reconnect the american telephone lines and reactivate the power stations.

One day, the two find many mindless ghouls led by a man named Roy Phillips. He had been using the feral zombies to drag aluminium sheets into a cleared out subway, making barricades and houses underground. Mr. Phillips seemed to be a joyful soul, but recently upset by being beat to the local tower on the horizon.

An english smooth-skin named Allister Tenpenny had just fortified the tower with his mercenary men. The local ghouls were hoping to inhabit the housing, but were told they would need a large amount of 'caps to move in. Until they had the caps, Roy had decided to live in the nearby tunnels, with his ghoul tenants very displeased.

Agent Shendou offered to help set up their underground sheds, commanding his robot to do all the heavy lifting. The feral zombies did not react to the scentless droid as he works by their side. When underground, Valmont is questioned by an unsuspecting ghoul named Masters, who turns the robot around to talk with Roy. When Masters and Valmont go topside, Roy introduces Shendou to the lot.

While introductions are on way however, what appear to be raiders begin to shoot from the hill above. The ferals begin dropping like flies, as Masters, Roy, and a few other ghouls begin firing at the invaders. Valmont is unfortunately extremely slow, and chose to use himself as cover for the other ghouls. After cleaning out the feral ghouls, the raiders begin to run at the remaining with bats and pipes, probably to conserve ammo.

Shendou used his tiger-claw to rip through the first wave, with Valmont mincing the second. Shendou forced a crippled raider as a tower shield when approaching the rest. While the final wave attacks, the chinese spy interrogates his shield. The raider is a man named Jaguar of the raider gang Wildcats, and before he can say anymore, one of his allies releases a shotgun buck into his face. Jaguar is still alive, but barely.

Shendou tossed down his meat shield to keep him from further harm. With three raiders still remaining in the final wave, they begin to disperse and retreat. A deathclaw had been sighted in the area. Shendou takes this news back to the ghouls, who then return underground in fear. Valmont jammed close the tunnel's gate and Shendou begin placing tripwire traps along the subway tunnel.

With great strength the deathclaw rips through the gate. It limps as it closes in on the first tripwire. Shendou hastily finishes the next trap, failing to put it together. A steel bar falls from the failed trap, pushing over Valmont. This alerts the deathclaw of the traps, it begins to disarm them.

Shendou called BS on the game master.

It continues to approach, successfully disarming the first tripwire. Shendou helped up Valmont, who revs up its buzz-saw. The deathclaw succeeds on the second disarm, making its way closer. Shendou backs up, letting Valmont take the brunt. The third tripwire activates without the deathclaw's knowledge, swinging a steel bar into the beast's gut. It looks angry, and mumbles something under its breath. Valmont stops its revving buzz-saw.

Shendou finds himself confused, Valmont tells him that the deathclaw is seriously injured, and it can talk. Shendou calls BS again as the deathclaw asks for help in a raspy voice. It wass hungry, but that encourages Shendou to want to kill it. It claims to be a pacifist, and it was hoping there was a food station in the subway, the ghoul does not trust the talking monter though.

Either way, a friend in a deathclaw is a powerful potential ally, and Shendou offers some packaged steak. Goanna the deathclaw grunts in displeasure. She's a vegetarian, which is why she is so starved. Valmont treats the deathclaw's limping leg and with another BS claim, Shendou goes further down the tunnel to ask Roy if there are any veggie burgers.

After a luck roll, it turns out one of the ghoul tenants is also a vegetarian. Roy asks whats happening up there with the deathclaw, and Shendou mutters "that bullshit is a vegetarian." After fed and healed, Goanna thanks Shendou and Valmont, hoping to meet them again in the wasteland. Shendou would rather not.

After moving the rest of the aluminium into the subway tunnels, the chinese await their compensation from Mr. Philips. However while saving up to get into Tenpenny's tower, they can only spare advice. Philips tells Shendou that some chinese remnants have been broadcasting a radio frequency for the past 40 years. Feeling that he could trust Roy, Shendou tells him he is secretly a chinese spy. Roy laughs, saying something along the lines of "no kidding?" Shendou tells Roy he and his robot will help deliver as much money they can to help their cause in entering Tenpenny's

While on their way to the co-ordinance Roy Philips gave, the chinese remnants stop at an abandoned diner for some easy eats. They were nearly out of edibles, and it seemed like a convenient choice. Shendou chose to enter first, scouting the diner for a meal. He startles at some skeletons, assuming them to be real. The radiated remains turn to dust as he punches them. The couple of bones were echos of humans before the blast, frozen in the moment before their final meal. Valmont gets the symbol, but Shendou jumps over their remains, eating the radiated pudding.

While eating, Valmont picks up life forms from within the kitchen, turning the corner to find a large amount of ants scavenging the food.
Valmont figured it could handle a couple of overgrown ants, as it rev'd up its saw to cut into them. Shendou obviously hears the buzz-saw, finishing up his meal before proceeding to the kitchen. By the time he got their his droid was covered in ants.

In a spark of cleverness, Shendou goes around back, leaving Valmont to continue his conflict. The spy followed the ant trail about 50 feet out, picked up a large stick and began drawing lines in their path. Aggravated and confused, the ants began attacking him without knowing where their trail had gone. Once Shendou cleared a path back to the diner, Valmont finally began taking back the establishment. The two teamed up to clear out the last of the ants, leaving many corpses to cook.

After Shendou filled his stomach, he began to repair his robot companion. Valmont and Shendou continued to rondevu with their remnant brothers. Or so they though. Valmont's repairs weren't complete due to lack of parts, so when the two saw a lone enclave eyebot surveying the land, they jumped at the chance to attack it.

However the eyebot was too fast for them, staying just out of their limited range. The hovering eye scanned Shendou's face, setting off an alarm in its interface. After shooting the ghoul a few times, the eyebot continued to just survey, tweaking its antenna.

Before getting any further, the whirling blades of a vertibird began chopping the air. With no-where to hide, Valmont stepped in front of his ghoul, protecting him from whatever would exit the landing vertibird. Two Enclave soldiers and one officer step out. The officer looked mighty impressed with whatever he was reading, holding the files. The Enclave soldiers were told to disarm, and they approach Valmont. The officer asked to see Shendou, explaining that the Eyebot was only conducting the wasteland census, and should not be assaulted. Weary, Shendou explains he was just a chinese refugee from the war. A passed speech check stopped the soldiers from violently detaining him. Instead, they offered him a business opportunity.

The entire time, the two soldiers insulting the mutant. The officer seemed very impressed with Shendou's "protectron" asking where he got it. Shendou bluffs that he purchased his own before the war. The Enclave officer seems to know better, but humors the ghoul. The officer, Jameson, offers to give the two a lift, first to an Enclave bunker for "certification" of Shendou's papers, and then to wherever they were headed. Shendou is reluctant to agree.

While blindfolded, and with his robot turned off, Shendou tries to get some information out of the Enclave. The soldiers are tight lipped, when they do reply it's only with insults about his mutations and his heritage. The officer, while piloting the Vertibird to their bunker, tells his men to shut up, and to treat the ghoul as a "v.i.p." until otherwise ordered. Shendou continues talking, trying to get their attention somehow. So he mentions the talking deathclaw. This grasped the officer's attention. He lets slip that the Enclave thought "they" were all dead. Interested, Shendou offers the location for more information. He discovered that talking deathclaws were an experiment performed on the other coast, and they began to overthrow the scientists, so they were all put down, or so they thought.

Once the vertibird landed within the underground bunker, Shendou's blindfold was removed. Once Valmont was reactivated Shendou whispered to it not to mention any information relating to China. After agreeing, the Enclave Officer asks Shendou to part ways with his robot companion, leaving it to the repair crews. Not wanting to separate, Shendou declines. Officer Jameson again asked Shendou, with more force in his voice. Realising that disagreeing with the Enclave in their base of operations would be a fool's mistake, Shendou follows the officer. Valmont waits on his own for the repair crew.

A shady scientist commands the robot to come with him, knowing it has A.I. capabilities. Valmont walks by the side of the scientist, who asks the droid what it exactly is programmed to do. Valmont skips a line of his usual dialogue, saying he practiced surgery when he learned to read, hence the buzz-saw on his arm. Interested, the scientist asked Valmont to step into the sick bay before continuing to the repair center. Valmont agrees, wanting to gain positive reputation for his creator.

After patching a few wounds on many confused soldiers, the scientist excuses doctors from a closed off patient ward. Valmont listens in to the conversation, learning that no-one can figure what is wrong with the men in the next room. The scientist introduces Valmont into the closed off room alone, not letting in anyone else.

Through an intercom, the scientist asks Valmont to diagnose the three men locked within. The first seemed fine, nothing but sweat. The second held anger and was restrained. The third was bloated and profusely sweating. Valmont was able to determine these were all signs from the same cause, but couldn't successfully determine what it could be. Logically taking the best guess, he determines that the three males are in different stages of pregnancy. The doctors tell the scientist that the robot is retarded or broken, but the scientist disagrees.

Asking to check the man in the "third trimester," Valmont was sure enough able to find a black fetes within his stomach. Thanking Valmont for his services, the scientist asks him to exit the room and continue on their way to the repairing station. While Valmont takes his leave he can see a soldier with a flamer approach the pregnant men. Their screams quickly covered up by the closing of the sound-proof doors.

The scientist was impressed with Valmont's work, and asks what else it can do. Valmont, interested in learning more about the Enclave's methods, says that he is proficient in using the buzz-saw arm in combat as well. Another detour before repairing Valmont; the firing range. They load energy cells into Valmont, asking him to test his range. Valmont doesn't hit a single target. He stops with energy cells to spare. Valmont claims he didn't even know he could do that, taking great interest in how it works itself.

Next the scientist released mechanical drones for Valmont to fight in melee. It makes short work of its brethren. The scientist continues to keep notes, asking him to continue to the repair chamber. Finally Valmont is repaired, but notices the scientist adding some "extra parts." The scientist asks if Valmont would like more combat training, to which Valmont is excited.

The scientist leads Valmont back to the firing range, locking him in the room with the droid. Three random ghouls drop from stasis-like pods, charging at the scientist. Valmont chose to protect the scientist, sawing the ghouls into a fine mist. Another wave of feral ghouls is dropped, in which the scientist is successfully protected again.

Then the madman asks for Valmont to hit him. Valmont disagrees, saying that would be a bad thing. The scientist continues to tease the robot, even picking up a lead pipe from one of the drones to smack it across Valmont's frame. With no success the scientist pulls out a gun, shoots himself in the leg, and begs Valmont to end his misery, or at least saw off his wounded leg. Again, Valmont chooses not to, not even treating the scientist's leg.

He smiles, standing back up, telling Valmont it was a prothetic leg anyway, but he 'passed the test'. The scientist calls in two soldiers to clean up the mess and escort Valmont back to the hanger.

Officer Jameson led Shendou down a long hall to their interrogation chamber. There, still with a nice attitude, Jameson asked again about Shendou's refuge in America; asking where he stayed, what he did before the bombs dropped, what he did after. He learned Shendou was trying to reconnect power lines although the ghoul didn't tell him why.

Jameson saw use in this, asking Shendou what else he is good at. Seeing the potential to play 'double agent' shendou explained he actually built Valmont from scrap, and did not in fact purchase it. Jameson told Shendou he knew, concerning Shendou quite a bit.

Jameson told Shendou their own protectrons and Mister Gutsys were malfunctioning, and attacking even their own soldiers on sight. Shendou offered to help, but after hours of work only was able to upgrade his own valmont design, offering it to the Enclave. Jameson was very pleased with this. The officer, after leaving the room, returned with a radio to give Shendou, telling them he could contact them if he needs any assistance, but also to contact if he found any "enemies of the state."

Secretly, Jameson gave it to Shendou to keep an ear on him at all times, hoping to finally finish off the chinese. Shendou believed he gained the trust of the Enclave, or at least that of Jameson, and was returned to the hanger about the same time Valmont had returned.

Interested as to why Valmont smelled of dead ghouls, the droid replied that he was simply in combat training. Shendou was not impressed, concerned his robot had been indoctrinated. Once again Valmont was turned off, and Shendou was blindfolded. When asked where to be dropped off, Shendou requested near a specific radio tower in the suburbs.

The ride back was quiet, a new pilot and two new soldiers, all of which were ordered to bite their tongues. Shendou was also quiet, trying not to be suspicious as to why he wanted to land at this particular radio station, so far west of the Capital Wasteland. The trip wasn't as long as before, and Shendou determined that the Enclave Bunker must be north of their current position. Once unblindfolded and alone, he would mark his suspicions on his map.

Valmont once again activated, asking if they were "there" yet. Shendou said yes, opening Valmont's secret chest compartment, holding a HAM radio. The 40 year old chinese signal continued screaming the code "BISON, BISON" with Shendou yelling into his radio's microphone "SHENDU, SHENDU". The chinese screaming stopped for a moment. Then only replied "Shendou?" before disconnecting. This was not a part of the code Shendou had learned, and was on edge, closing Valmont's radio.

Moments passed before a manhole opened a good distance from the radio tower. A chinese soldier yelling out the spy's name. Agent Bison revealed to be a spy as well, with a similar goal to Shendou's. In fact they were in the Chinese Spy Academy together, Bison being an A-ranked espionage agent. Bison told Shendou and his robot to quickly enter the bunker before any eyebots could spot them. Underground they are introduced to two more chinese ghouls, both unfortunately feral from radiation overdoses in the past hundred years. Both of which Shendou remembers, ending session one.
