As The Vault reports, Aggrogamer has a new interview with Chris Avellone, reminiscing over the good old days as he strokes his lengthy gray beard:
AG: As far as Fallout 3 (Van Buren) goes is there any chance the files will ever see the light of day like KOTOR2 or HL2 on Dreamcast; or even a legit release from Bethesda down the line someday?

CA: I don't believe those files will ever see the light of day, but I don't know. And it's not up to me anyway. Fallout belongs to Bethesda, I doubt they'd dig through those archives or if they even have all the files in order to share them with the public, and I doubt they'd even want to (I don't see what benefit it would be for them). I do know that a lot of Van Buren docs have ended up on the internet and from what I've seen; they're accurate from what I remember.

(...)

AG: You and your team got to revisit Fallout again with New Vegas and it's add-ons, was this a something you and your team had to think about or was it just an instant yes?

Would you guys do another Fallout and do you think BethSoft would ever do an alternating dev cycle a-la Activision with Treyarch and IW doing CoD?

CA: Aside from getting the contract squared away, I believe everyone on at the studio was a "yes" on this. Fallout's one of the best RPG franchises to work on, and it was one we didn't think we'd get a chance to return to, and then… New Vegas came along.
We'd love to work on another Fallout, although that would depend on Bethesda. We certainly enjoyed working with them on New Vegas and we still have a lot of cool ideas and adventures we'd love to do for the Fallout universe.

Thanks, veryblackraven.

It's pretty pathetic if they really won't release the van buren files just because it "wont benefit them"....but it's probably true. Which is just sad. It would certainly be cool to see one day

Well, as most people here already know, there's this and a bunch of design docs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure what else could be released - development ended too early. However, I bet that the story of how these files got here would be interesting to know, in itself.

As for the rest of the interview, it's always good to hear from MCA. Not much new information there, though.

A good part of the game was already done. It still would have required many more months of development, but if I remember correct, the released techdemo is a much, much older build.

Wait, why is it pretty pathetic? There's really no obligation to put out unfinished games in the open, it happens rarely in special circumstances and that's it. Besides, we don't even know if Bethesda has all the files archived, in what state the build of the game they were given by Interplay was, etc.

They can't put out unfinished stuff made by other developers. What if the unfinished stuff is better than the actual game?
Imagine Gearbox decided to release the early Duke Nukem Forever build that was shown at E3 2001. People would be even more pissed that the actual DNF is the way it is.
Although GSC Gameworld actually did release an older, better build of Stalker. Of course, that was to show that they actually did once make the game they promised...

Van Buren already got lot more release than I ever thought possible. Tech demo and all those documents...it satisfied my curiosity, if not my desire to play the finished game.

This interview was great btw. The description of Obsidian's beginnings sound really rough. I am glad they persevered. Obsidian and CDProjekt are the pinnacle of AAA RPG genre today, I hope they never go out of business.

I'm not saying they're really obligated to release it, I'm just saying if they have the power to do so, then why not? You know what I mean?
