A lot of the people working on programming in Open Source have or have had full-time programming jobs. Besides that, Open Source software is often written for the people who write it, to scratch a 'personal itch' so to say. Hence it's also written for people like the programmer, and programmers are a lot better at reporting and fixing bugs than John Doe.
Besides that, a lot of quality software is Open Source, probably a lot of the software and protocols you're unwittingly using as well.

Linux isn't UNIX based, its architecture and interface are UNIX-derived, but it has not been built on UNIX-code. Unlike Mac OS X, which is built on a modified UNIX kernel.
The difference between Mac and Linux, however, is the focus. Mac is focused on its own platform and its own products, it's a lot less moddable and a lot less customizable than Linux and other Open Source products are.

Bullshit. Linux was constructed by a Computer Science student in his spare time, everything that has been added to it has been done in people's spare time as well. It's purely a fan based product, but because those people use it themselves, they put a lot of time and effort into getting it right.
And what's the deal with commercial products? The GIMP is just as good as Photoshop, PDF-viewer is easily faster and handier than Adobe Acrobat Reader, Macromedia Flash works under Linux, and a lot of programs are being rewritten for Linux as well these days.
In fact, if you're so hung up over the 'no commercial products' thing, then why are you advertising Mac? It has a lot fewer products available than Windows.

Lastly, you might wanna remind yourself that the vast, vast, vast majority of Web Servers run on Linux or Unix and use Apache to deliver content to you. All Open Source.
As is, by the way, the entire Internet architecture and protocols.

Free does not make anything better, arguing that would be stupid. But free doesn't make it any worse either.

As for graphical design, yes, that's the one thing Linux is not suited for (yet). The drivers for graphics cards that are available are quite simply not up to par with the drivers available for Mac and Windows. That's all there is to it.

As for having to learn Linux, see it as an investment. If no-one would ever take the time to learn something new, where would we be now? 'it's too much of a hassle' is really just an excuse not to use Linux. You might as well say 'I don't feel like it'. But then at least admit that, and don't come up with that argument.
 
I'm not calling you an MS-Lover, I'm just saying your mindset very closely mirrors that of MS-evangelists (the "Nothing free can possibly be worthwhile" argument). Should've made that a bit clearer, but when seemingly uniformed people rant against open-source software it tends to get my blood up. So sorry.

And I don't hate Mac's (I don't know about everyone else), I'm just indifferent. Linux you can use, say, WINE to be able to use many Windows-only programs without much performance loss at all. Macs have Windows emulators, but that is essentially running programs on top of an OS on top of a program on top of an OS and generally results in terrible performance. Then there's the fact that my experience with Apple amounts to them having most of the corporate mindset of MS without the incredible market share to back it up, the great software selection, lack of modification ability ala Linux, and a higher price (bundled) than Windows-based PCs to boot... Is it any wonder that Mac users are a niche market, and are generally disrespected/ridiculed?

As said earlier, there are plenty of open-source alternatives available on Linux that are actually easier to use in many cases (IMO) than their retail counterparts (example: GIMP vs. Photoshop). I won't argue that they're more functional as well, that would be idiotic- but if there's something you really need that hasn't been patched in yet, code it yourself. And then contact the development team and ask them to splice in your code in the next milestone release so everyone can benefit from what you've made.
In the end whole point of Linux isn't using retail software, it's about creating and using free, modifiable programs on a free, modifiable OS. But if you WANT or NEED to use retail Windows-based software, you can. On Mac you generally can't without being penalized in some way.

I'll admit that Windows is far easier to use than Linux, though (for the layman). The only way Linux will ever spread beyond enthusiasts is if there is a fully GUI-based version of it created (one where you never NEED to use the command prompt, I mean) ala Windows, and they manage to get it bundled with new PCs. That's the real sticker, you have to make a conscious attempt to switch to Linux, and most people would rather use what they already have because the prospect of switching scares them. That's kind of the point of a lot of your post, Frissy- you don't want to switch because the idea of having to learn something new scares you. This is why I said you possess the "MS mindset".
