The village of Amros was quite that night. The townspeople were preparing for a long deserved rest after a hard days work. The soft amber glow from the fire pit was all that could be seen as Matt looked out of the window of the old van that is now where he slept. Matt and Cheryl were best friends ever since they were old enough to have friends. They were bother the same age, 15. Matt was a well-built boy that enjoyed nothing more than adventure and action. Cheryl, while able to hold her own in a brawl, studied science and medical skills while growing up.
The little town of Amros had an agreement with the Brotherhood of Steel for they’re young to become initiates in exchange for the village’s protection. It was well known that if they didn’t have the Brotherhood’s protection, Amros would already be a long forgotten memory.
Matt woke up with a start as Cheryl gave him a quick smack in the ribs. “Come on! The Brotherhood’s comin’ today to check us out! If your asleep when they get here you’ll never get in.” said Cheryl. Matt groaned “how long till they get here?” “bout 2 hours.” “Ok, I’m coming. Do me a favor, give Copper some food.” “Fine but hurry. Meet me at Momma’s for breakfast.” Matt sat up and looked around the van. The blankets were tossed over the floor, a crude, wooden shelf held his favorite knife and the 9mm pistol his father had given him before he set out to find nearby settlements to start trade with. It’s been 2 months since he left but wasn’t expected back for 4 months. Matt ran his hand through messy, dirty-blond hair. As he swung open the van door, he was assaulted by bright sunlight. Shielding his eyes with one hand, the other quickly searching for the sun glasses he found in a pile of trash one day. Matt knew Cheryl took them as she usually did, but it was a habit that he was still used to.
Matt stepped outside squinting, and waved to Johnny who was playing with his pet brahmin as usually. Momma wasn’t his real mother but she might have well been. Mary, as she used to be called before the children gave her the name Momma, has cared for Matt and Cheryl as well as every other child ever living with her. Momma had the biggest home since she usually fed and tended to all the other inhabitants of Amros. Momma lived in a trailer. There were bigger buildings in the village, such as the town hall.
Matt walked past several other abodes, mostly old cars and vans but some tents and small shacks, greeting people as he made his way to Momma’s. When he arrived, he was greeted by an always-friendly Cheryl. “So are you excited? We’ve been waiting for this day for years now.” Exclaimed Cheryl as she took a bite of toast. “Yea, of course. I’m just worried that they’re gonna be dissappointed. There’s only 2 of us this year.” Said Matt.
Momma appeared from her trailer with a plate of food and as always, a warm smile. “Matthew! Good morning. I hope you know what your doing with these Steel boys.” Says Momma. “Oh, Momma, I’ve been waiting for this day for years! There’s nothing I want more. And they’re the Brotherhood, you should remember that incase they want to talk to ya.” Matt said with a grin. “I’m goin’ to the can, be right back.” Matt walked to a small shack in a clearing of a few trees with a basin of water and a comb. After doing his morning ritual he washed up and ran a comb through his short hair.
An hour later Matt and Cheryl were washed and dressed. Matt was wearing his best khaki pants and a plain, white t-shirt. He had his knife, sheathed, strapped to his right leg and his 9mm was holstered at his side. Cheryl was wearing a loose pair of thin, cotton pants and a haulter top. She was practicing kicking a dummy that was tied to a tree.
“Hey! Cheryl! There’s a car comin! It’s them!” Shouted Matt. Cheryl gave one last kick to the dummy’s head and walked to where Matt was sitting at a table. She splashed some water on her face and sat down, exhausted, beside Matt. “I don’t know why you do that every morning.” “It’s healthy. You should try it, gives ya more energy.” “Yea, yea, at least I’m presentable.” Matt dodges a playful, smack as he stands up and straightened his clothes. He glances at Cheryl and is amazed at how pretty she is even when sweating and with messy hair, regardless of what he jokes about with her. The two approached the Brotherhood jeep, as anxious as ever.
A man clad in green combat armor swung open the door and stepped out, stretching his legs, followed by a women in a similar uniform. Most of the town was there now to greet them. Matt stepped forward and offered a hand to the man. The man took his hand saying “I am Brian, Brotherhood of Steel knight.” “My name is Kate, it’s good to have eager members to join us.” Says the women. “I’m Matt, and this is Cheryl. We have been waiting a long time for this day.” “It’s really good to meet you. Thanks for coming all this way just for us.” Said Cheryl. “I assume you are aware of the rules and life style you will follow?” asks Brian, in a professional voice. “Oh yes, we’ve both read the forms and manuals you gave us many times.” explains Cheryl. “Good, then if there’s nothing you have left to do here, we should start back to base. We should be there tomorrow morning.” Explains Kate in a cheery voice. “Uhh, I think we’re ready.” Matt looks at Cheryl who nods in agreement, and after they pickup they’re pack-backs of belongings, and say they’re good-bye’s with a promise that they would be back to visit in 4 months, they got into the jeep and were off.

thanks, comin from you guys it's a good feeling. I guess I'll keep going. any suggestions?

Here's a suggestion..try working on painting a story about a more civilized place....

Or focus on the life of something else...like a wild dog? Hey, it's a unique POV.. ;7

Or if you're feeling a mite more creative, pop on over to the Vault13.net fanfic area, and read The Bet fic. *sheepish grin*

put this on..
