An alternate Fallout universe

Rich Dickardson

First time out of the vault
One where Nazi Germany and the other Axis powers of WWII existed up until the Great War of 2077 instead of the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China and the other Communist nations. Have you ever wondered what Fallout would look like with such a scenario?

I have. I've been thinking it over since I first played Fallout. See, there are parts set up in the canon created by Black Isle/Obsidian that I just cannot stick with no matter what, the biggest one being a PRC being the world's biggest power tied with the USA while the Soviet Union is still around. Sure, it might have been possible, but something about it just irks me, so to get around that obstacle, I've decided to make up my own alternate Fallout universe. One that I'm more comfortable with writing stories in.

Before anyone says "If you're not comfortable with writing a story in the canon Fallout universe, don't bother writing any Fallout stories at all", the reason why I'm writing in an alternate Fallout universe is to hone my skills, experiment and see how far I could go with creating a whole new fictional world before I actually go on to create something that is entirely thought up by me. Sure, there are still some elements I'm bringing over from canon Fallout, but then again, it's like a big sandbox for me. One that I'm free to experiment in without my brain chemistry butting in the way, mentally saying to me "No, you can't do this".

So anyways, I'll be posting my Fallout stories up on here soon, to share with all the wonderful people here. If they garner positive feedback, then that will be a sign to me that I could move on to creating 100% completely new universes.

Hey this looks interesting, you ever think of creating or joining an RP? I'm looking forward to your stories :D I'm the devoted writer myself

Glutton Creeper did something about Nazis in their "fallout" game (rebuilt as (Exodus")

It is a D20 game... I own it but have not read it well enough to know all the specifics.

Thanks.

I've RPed in this alternate Fallout universe that I brought up in this thread before. Maybe I could bring it up again in the RP section of the forums.

Just wondering, can I post stories and edit them later in a single post? Like for example, if I've got too much on my hands, but I want to post what I have so far and edit it later when I have the time.

I'm intrigued. Tell me all about it.

I believe so, though you'd have to notify people first as it doesn't show that it's been edited unless people actually read it again. :)

Understand that fully. I'll finish up the prologue a bit, and post it.

They did a pretty good job with the game setting. I dont really like their nazi backstory though... no real reason for it since there are no nazis in their game.

In my "game" (which is just notes I have been typing up off and on over the last few years) I came up with an excuse for my nazis... they are Neo-Nazis from a faction of Michigan Militia types (since I am from the area)

The Glutton Creeper Nazis seemed like they just wanted to talk about the Third Reich for no particular reason.

This intrigues me, Rich Dick. Totally run with it, if it's good I'll devour it. I love What Ifs like this.

Already posted a story set in this alternate Fallout universe. The thread's called "Alternate Fallout 1".

I read it. I give the writing style a 6/10 and content 9/10.

To be blunt, I think you could have done a better job if you had presented it in a first person perspective instead of an omnipresent third person. It reads like an extended ron perlman speech, which isn't bad but with dialog cutting it up it was a bit awkward to read.

The characters are pretty good though, you did well developing them through both action and dialog. The plot is unfolding pretty nicely as well, I like that you focused more on the characters and their reactions to what is going on instead of the politics and action. It was one hell of a lead up and I'm hungry for more.

I actually wrote it in the second person, in which one example sentence would instead be "You were dancing," instead of "She was dancing," as in third person or "I was dancing," as in first person.

I'm glad that you liked it so.

Yeah, I don't really understand literature terms. I just know that the story was awkward to read in places. Probably because when someone says "You" I think "middle aged white guy" and not "four year old black girl." That and I don't think I've ever read a story that used this kind of narration outside of Goosebumps and those chose your own adventure books. But if you know what you're doing then go with it, maybe it's an acquired reading thing. Can't wait to see what kind of adventures the now grown me Naomi and my/her family gets into upon leaving the vault.

With reading from a second-person narration, it helps when you try to "become" that character, regardless of age, gender or race. When I read a second-person narration, it helps when I see things from a point of view that I think the character would have. It may be harder than with a first-person narration, but if you can pull it off, it really helps.

A good part of the inspiration for writing from a second-person narrative would have to come from Fallout. Likewise, when you observe various objects in Fallout, it's second person. So to establish some familiarity between canon Fallout and my twist on Fallout, I wrote it from the second-person perspective. It's like if you chose a pre-made character in Fallout.

As for Naomi's family, they'll be staying in the Vault. It'll just be a recon team of five going out.
