Another Feargus Interview

Feargus really has been making the rounds these last few days. The latest piece being an interview at 1Up. No specific questions on Fallout 3, this feature covers Neverwinter Nights 2, Feargus' history, and Obsidian's future.

<blockquote>Urquhart: I'd kind of like to do something set in the near future, too; a hardcore RPG set in the near future.

1UP: There haven't been many lately.

Urquhart: Not at all. I think that's part of the reason why people want a new Fallout. Of course, we have to convince publishers that it's a good idea. We pitched an idea a little while back, and maybe it was a little too nutty, but I'd still like to make it. I think it'd be fun to play -- a small group fighting aliens, or zombies, or Barneys, or whatever.

As much as I've been knocking him I hope he gets to make it. Obsidian has a lot of talent and I'd be very interested in seeing an original game from them, especially a "modern day" RPG.

"I think it'd be fun to play -- a small group fighting aliens, or zombies, or Barneys, or whatever."

Sounds like a solid plan.

Edit:

No really, I'd like a modern crpg too, but what kind of concept is that? If you can sum up an rpg as "fighting stuff" I think I'll go with Unreal Tournament instead.
Btw, I downloded a fanmade Zak McKracken 2 demo. And there is another! Now this is something that excites me. Good old adventures is something I crave even more than good old crpgs.

I have to agree with the general sentiment. It would be interesting to see Obsidian try their collective hand on an original RPG, and using the near future as the setting only improves the idea. Not to mention he specifically said "hardcore RPG," hope he shares our idea of what type of RPG that would be.

Abomination was more a tactical bug laden crap fest then a hardcore RPG. Unless when he says hardcore RPG he means Tactical bug laden crap fest. In which case thats exactly what it is.

What kind of compelling near-future setting can you have for a CRPG other than a post apocalyptic one, or a Jagged Alliance look alike?

Deus Ex I'll give you, but its combat and perspective are entirely different from what we're used to.

"You'll fighting aliens, or something."

I see you've thought a lot about it, Feargus. Who doesn't want to fight aliens, and stuff?

A zombie RPG would be totally tits, though. A world like Dawn of the Dead where society is forced to revert back to small communities due to the threat of the hordes of undead.

Now, is this according to the general definition of "hardcore" = P&P RPG, or everything he's spewed in the last few years? Who knows, "hardcore" for Feargus could just mean that there's more BioWare "tactics" involved in the game.

Not at all. I think that's part of the reason why people want a new Fallout.

The want is contrary to a line of Feargus' sewage a long time ago, especially in regards to TORN and the other things he's insisted that Fallout be skullfucked into (including his good buddy's project of Lionheart), I'd have to say that Feargus is just saying that to get some naive person's hopes up. Given Feargus' track record, it's hard to believe him seriously.

The "hardcore RPG" many of us tend to think of isn't the same principles of the teat he's been sucking on for the previous years. Now he has all six nipples of BioWare's in his mouth.

Now it's time to START SUCKING! :D

That's what I'm thinking as well. Aside from Fallout 2 every Black Isle (and now Obsidian) RPG has been made from a Bioware engine/game, and I can't really picture them taking a radical departure from that.

NWN's engine is called Aurora.

Same thing, really. It's just the previous coding incompetence of the Inbred Engine given a shiny new set of clothing. Pathfinding, AI, etc. are all to BioWare's standards - "What, people pay attention to that?"
