Are energy weapons necessary? (Fallout 1)

First time out of the vault
Hey Fallout players,

I've been playing Fallout 1 and I'm up to the part where you have to destroy the mutant's base. The problem is, I get rather "owned"by their energy weapons and gattling guns. I now have power armour but the problem is I'm not very skilled at energy weapons, (mainly small weapons). Is proficiency with energy weapons necessary to beat the mutants? Is there a way of getting proficient with energy weapons quickly? If not is there some other way to level the playing field? By the way, my strength is only 5, so some of the larger energy weapons I can't use. Oh and if energy weapons are necessary could someone recommend which energy weapon is most suited to combat with mutants, keeping in mind my strength of 5 (after operation at Brotherhood of Steel)?

Whilst I'm here I would like to ask, is there a level cap in Fallout 1?

Thanks,

Level cap is 21 I think. And I had the same problem you did. I used the combat shotgun with plenty of ammo on burst mode and used hit and run tactics.

No, if you have the Small Guns skill for instance you can try to take them out with a Sniper Rifle and aimed shots from afar. Melee and Unarmed have both been known to do the trick.

You can also avoid combat to a very large extent.

If you have no unspent skill points and didn't invest in Energy Weapons at all before now it may be a bit difficult, especially with the -20% ST penalty. You can always put it off for another game. There is one weapon which would help you a bit, but it would require LK 8-10 or so to get hold of it.

Yes, this is in the manual.

No. But it helps.

Refresh my memory Per, was Tag! in Fallout 1? I'd think so :?

With or without power armour?

You can, actually, but with less efficacy.

But it's short range would require you to pair it with a Sniper Rifle for example, to fight the muties most effectively.

Also, maybe you could combine a Sniper Rifle and for close quarters that piece Irwin gives you in the Hub?

Ok, level cap is 30, duh. You can take out muties with pretty much any small gun, since thier damage modifiers are pretty low (unless they are nightkin, then your rightly fucked) targeted shots to the eyes can help alot. Once I took out the entire military base with nothing but 5 stims, the 10mm pistol from the holding cell, and 24 rounds of JHP, and took out all the muties/robots. Thats why they made the tageting system.

Yeah, it is, and may very well solve the problem if not already taken.
