Hi all,

I'm 2 days into my first run of the game, but I've got crashes to desktop every ~5 mins. Sometimes I can play for an hour, sometimes 2 min.

Although I'm looking into solutions on the Bethesda board (I'm going to take a shower afterwards), I'd like to get an overview of how many people are experiencing difficulties.

As most people that are on the Beth tech forum have a problem (if not, why be there), I'm posting it here. Where else to find a sceptical lot of FO fans.

This indeed is Oblivion with guns and a FO theme. No depth in story, no speech trees, difficulty is too low (one hour in game, already got laser weapons / bazooka / Flamer - can pop centaurs and mutants with ease).
The game relies on tactical wits, not on brainpower. A noob will have a difficult time, to someone with RPG and FPS experience this is a walk in the park.

So, do you

- Have no problems at all playing
- Audio stuttering (DJ comes through OK, music stutters)
- Video problems (lag in intensive areas)
- Quits do desktop
- Problems installing/launching

?
 
Nothing other than broken AI forcing mission restarts. At least they carried one thing over from fallout 1&2, you need to save a lot
 
The biggest problem I have are also sudden crashes to desktop. Not as frequently as 5 minutes, but maybe every hour or so. The game also slows down occasionally, especially when entering VATS. Not a biggie, but sort of strange... The game doesn't feel that graphics intensive. Far Cry 2 looked and performed quite a lot better for me. Still, like I said, it's not a biggie.

The crashes are damn annoying though.
 
I've had lots of trouble with crashes. The game ran ok for a while on the ultra graphics settings but problems started when I left the vault. Everything slowed down and the game crashed often, especially when I enter vats combat.

Anyway, i found this thread helpful. I did the tweaks mentioned there, updated my graphics driver and lowered my settings to high. The game runs a lot better and I don't experience crashes anymore. I do still encounter occasional problems with vats (after i activate it, the enemy is highlighted but i cannot target it nor can i exit vats) but it doesn't lead to a crash now. I just need to reload my last save.

The weird thing now though is that I can never exit the game in a normal way. Exiting directly from game or from the main menu just leads to a frozen screen. I need to do a little blind alt-ctrl-del action to get back to windows.

I'd definitely like to hear other suggestions on improving the technical bugs.
 
I was really clear and crash free until about hour 35 or so, and now I just found Tenpenny tower area (for kill key quest), and my game is crashing every 30 min or so: Freeze while entering VATS, abnormally long load time for savegame (like 2 min once), and CTD's when zoning.

Very frustrating to have this happening now when the game seemed fine earlier.
 
The link that KQX helped me. Just played for a pretty long session without any crashes. There appears to be some sort of memory leak going though as the performance (not very noticably, but still) got more sluggish towards the end. I also had the same problem as KQX when exiting the game.
 
I've been having a lot of problems. I'm running an IFL-90 which is well above the lowest system requirements.

I get crashes when:

- I'm loading my saved game from the start screen
- I'm starting the game from the launch menu
- I'm walking around just anywhere -- often when I'm just entering a new area
- I'm toggling through my pipboy

Sometimes i get a graphics driver failure and it recovers and the game crashes. Other times the game "Stops working". OTHER times the whole thing freezes completely and I have to manually reboot!! *shudder*

OH and I've noticed something I've heard other people comment on: The game is MUCH more likely to crash if I've played it even once before without restarting my computer. That is to say that it will crash if I play the game, it crashes, and then I try to play it again. It will also crash if I play the game, exit it normally, then try to play again later w/o a system reboot.

If anyone has CTD try to set you keys to default, I know it sounds weird but it works. I had CTD every 30 sec. I did that thing with ffdshow but I still had those crashes, after setting keys to default I had none.

Lol its my first post and im lurking this forum for few years now.
 
I'm getting lockups/freezes rather than crashes. Most times you can alt+tab out and kill the process, but a couple of times it has been a complete system lockup needing a hard reset. There was also one occasion where the video card went into an endless cycle of VPU recovery that also required a system reset. Not much in the way of patterns, but has occurred a couple of times when bringing up the Pip-Boy.

I also get a lot of slowdown that seems primarily to be as a result of fog/particle effects.

My system specs are:

Opteron 165 1.8GHz
2GB DDR-400/PC3200
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB 625/993MHz (Catalyst 8.10)
DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra-D
XP Pro SP3

Ok, well i updated my graphics driver and that solved nearly all of my problems. I crash MUCH less now. But still some crashes.
