I was in the process of putting my "Uber Rig" together before the kid shows up. Specs so far:

Lian Li V1100 Case
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe M/b
AMD 64 3500+
1Gb OCZ Platinum Rev 2 RAM
200 Gb HD
PC Power and Cooling Turbo 510 Delux PSU

Well, the wife and I got two new desks in our upstairs den, as we're clearing out our current office to turn into a nursery.

Bad news, my 2 21" inch CRT's wouldn't fit on the new desk without using up all the available space.

Solution? Wife says go ahead and order two of these:

God I love her.

2 lil' comments:

- try & get your hands on a 90nm 3500+ (rather than a 130nm 3500+), which is mostly better for overclocking, but it also reduces the temperature by a fair amount.

- TFT:
1) "Replacement or Refund for 8 or more DEAD PIXELS ONLY!". 8 dead pixels is A LOT! you might get better deals in a local pc store.
2) the following specs (for a game pc) should be:
contrast 500:1 or higher
responsetime 16ms or lower
brightness: at the very least 250cd/m²
(DVI or DVI-D are a plus)

it is also preferable to be able to test the screen for ghosting yourself (which would require you to check it out at a local store.), response times can be fiddled with...

-> i suppose you do some reading before deciding ;)

PS: you forgot to mention your 3dcard

Got the 90NM, so no problem there.

Did a ton of reading/researching, and these gave the most bang for the buck. I could have gone better, but I was leary of spending 600+ ea.

Och, video card was a BFG 6800GT OC.

How much did it cost?

I need a new comp badly.

Mohrg

I tired to go as top of the line as I could (within financial reason).

So far, (not including the monitors), I've plunked down about 2000.00

When buying a computer, a good sign to look out for is the Pentium processor. All shitty companies/computers "are powered by Intel Pentium Processors". Dell, MDG, the processors themselves; stay away from a Pentium processor and you'll be good.

The AMD 64 3400+ beats the best intel chip in actual game performance anyway.

Very nice. I've been planning on getting almost exactly the same CPU+MBO+RAM combo (well, 'cept my memory is probably going to be Corsair), because it's more viable than upgrading my current system with another two sticks of (mucho-expensive) RDRAM.

I always support one's decision to move from CRT to LCD, but this monitor is very, very poor. It only supports the antiquated analog input, pixel pitch is huge (anything above 0.264mm sucks), response time is high (12 ms is today's standard) and, like SuAside pointed out, their policy regarding dead pixels is outrageous. A single dead pixel is so goddamn annoying it keeps you from seeing anything else on the screen, and eight is like having a wooden log thrust into your eye, especially since pixels usually die in clusters. Friendly piece of advice, Pope - avoid this monitor like the plague.

Hrrrmmmm.Disconcerting to say the least, but unfortunately, they're already out the door.

I'll wait for them to arrive, and see if they meet my needs.

If not, back they'll go.

Thanks guys!

Actually, prior to the Athlon -64, Pentium 4's were the best gaming procesors around (not necesarrily best bang for-buck, though aIntel isn't into that). Also, pentium 4's are still good gaming processors. They just aren't (nearly) as good as Athlon-64s, exponentially moreso when comparing by price. So please don't say all P4 systems suck, for they do not. And most prebuilt systems are not made for more than 2D graphics anyway(regardless of how they are advertised), so to expect them to perform at all is dumb. So to say that P4 based prebuilt sytems are bad, while true, is misleading: Almost all prebuilts are going to be bad for gaming, regardless of it's processor.

Also, the 3400+ does not beat all Intel processors. It just beats all comparably priced Intel processors.

By the way, this argument is moot, because he's building his own rig anyway.

However, the Pentium 4's architecture is absolutely horrendous, long pipelines and such make it inefficient for a lot of things. Compare it to a PowerPC with a lower frequency and the PowerPC will easily beat it in most benchmarks. Intel has created the so-called MegaHertz Myth (the myth that more megahertz=better, it isn't, pipelines, architecture and number of transistors also matter a lot), and now have to live up to it by going for more and more MegaHertz. Luckily they are trying to get rid of it, as can be seen by the Pentium M processors and other equivalents that are coming to desktop.
So, in conclusion, all P4 systems DO suck, but the alternatives aren't that great either (Gaming on a Mac, pheh).

Well, received my 19's yesterday, hooked them up, and ran them through my testing:

- Doom 3
- Half life 2
- Pirates!
- Playing of various movies
- Dawn of War

I am happy to say, that there was no ghosting, image clarity was excellent for me, and the brightness/contrast were perfect.

While they not be the best out there, they certainly seem to meet my needs, and for the price it was a bargain, especially considering that it was an unplanned purchase, and I had sunk most of my spare dough into the workstation itself.
