So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
Admin
We've moved sites and I junked the old and crappy downloads area and started a fresh one... y'all should start putting your files in there.

Mod users, if there's something you're looking for that used to be in the old downloads area you should pester modders to put it up there.

If you are a modder and looking for access to the downloads area but you do not currently have it please PM me

Our web host actually shut down our site for a time because at least two Fallout related files had trojans in them. Since I'm not a regular mod user I can't determine what is and isn't a useful/necessary mod/file and which ones are either old or pointless, so I'd like to leave it up to people who know what they're doing.

@Sduibek for instance has Fallout Fixt and there was a version of that in the downloads area that was probably 2 or 3 years behind what he was doing. People were using that instead of his mod simply because it was in the 'downloads' area.

It was the best option, the backend of that downloads area was a nightmare and 95% what was in there was mostly useless/dubious/undocumented and stored in files names like "098sadf079a309370sa9dffdasdf.zip". The people actually making files weren't the ones uploading anything and users were continually downloading things that were years out of date or simply didn't work, then ended up in the modding forum anyway.

If you think something should be in there, this is your chance to put it in. If you are a modder, let me know and I will give you access to the downloads area to upload and edit your files as you please. Files can even be featured promotionally.

@Korin, it obviously wasn't. There are links all over the web pointing to the downloads section, where do they point now? To the main page? At least there should be an explanation posted. Not here in forum, but there at the old downloads url.
(That's even leaving out the fact that it wouldn't be very hard to find a regular mod user who'd agree to sort out the downloads)

As for different people making and uploading things, I don't see the improvement. If the system isn't changed, then 3 years from now it's the same situation.

And yes, I did some modding, but I have my own hosting, so no thanks.

Personally I'm glad that old landfill got cleared out. As Korin rightly said, most of the stuff in there was outdated junk.
We can go to Drobovik's database in case there was something in there we really needed, but I have a feeling I probably won't.

Burn raises a valid question though - where do links to the old downloads section now point to?

Also, YAY for letting us edit our first post again!

They don't point anywhere but I could re-route traffic to the base download URL over to the resources area, though it's somewhat pointless since nothing is really there.

I'm not sure where these "links all over the web" are because they weren't leading to our downloads area. Most downloads area traffic came from users browsing to NMA, seeing a section called "download" and then going there. These users then left the site and didn't return. Even just in this thread all of the "download links" are off-site and not related to NMA in any way. The impact here is not as large as you believe it to be. I'm viewing this at a higher level of generic web traffic flow.

As for different people making and uploading things, I don't see the improvement. If the system isn't changed, then 3 years from now it's the same situation.
I'm not sure how you don't see the difference but the only files uploaded and updated in the downloads area will be ones the modders put there. If they update the mod, the expectation is that they would update it in the area. What we're offering here is unlimited space and bandwidth, something you can't get with a lot of hosting solutions. We're also offering the visibility afforded by NMA being the largest Fallout fan website on the internet. The downloads area itself has several features that will be useful to modders, such as version control, a comment/rating system and overall better control of the files/user interaction itself.

And yes, I did some modding, but I have my own hosting, so no thanks.

That's up to you but you will get much more visibility on any mods you make by putting it in the downloads area. This is just how the user behaviour on NMA works. I don't control how the average user uses the site. Very few will actually go to the modding forum and dig around looking for different mods.

@Korin
Sure, if you say so.

I don't see the difference because a few years ago the only files uploaded were the ones that modders put there, exactly the same situation, no?

And please take this as fair feedback from someone who did a number of upgrades, and who knows how they usually turn out (which is ungrateful). I don't mean to undermine your efforts.

What do you suggest as alternative?
