Augustus Autumn's motivations

I don't think this is explained in the game properly: what, exactly, is Autumn's agenda? Eden mentions that he viewed the plan to poison any and all mutants with the Purifier as too extreme.

Then what? Did his troops actually worked towards restoring the government? That'd be an ironic twist.

They worked toward assuming power over the people I am guessing. Having control of vast quantities of clean water in a wasteland would give you a lot of power.

So basically, Autumn pursued the same goal as you (assuming you are a good person) and had to die because of the misguided Brotherhood... truly ironic.

No I believe James' goal was to use the machine to purify as much water as possible and let it flow free. I can't really see a militaristic group giving something away for free when they could instead withhold it for power.

I thought their goals were similar to those they had in FO2?

There they planned to launch a modified FEV into the atmosphere to kill all irradiated creatures on the mainland, which includes even humans that weren't transformed to ghouls. Here they sought to do the same through a large water source.

Then the mainland would be free for the truly pure Enclave humans to take over.

Why the hell Eden or Autumn suddenly had a change of heart isn't really explored or elaborated upon, but then again neither are a lot of key elements of the story in FO3. Alas.

Eden states that Autumn disagreed with his methods, especially using the FEV as a mass destruction weapon. As he put it, Autumn is simply too humane.

I thought that Autumn wanted the Enclave to be the guiding force of the Capitol Wasteland, as opposed to the Brotherhood of Steel. In that last dialogue, he says that people will flock to the Enclave for water and protection. The fact that he didn't want to wipe out all mutated life, and can actually be convinced to just walk away, probably speaks to his more humane nature as opposed to Eden.

Convinced to just walk away? Hm.

... I think I may have missed one last encounter with Autumn. The last time I saw him was when he pointed a gun at me in the interrogation chamber.

WHAT?

I need to replay that section. I absolutely love him as a character.

Wait, you can convince Autumn to walk away?

I convinced Eden to self-destruct, but Autumn just started shooting right away, so I vaporized him with my Gatling Laser.

I got Eden into a classic Robot Logic death too and talked Autumn and his men out of the control room. But I mean, in regards to Autumn, you need to ask WHY a patriot like that would agree to follow a computer and lie to all his men.

Why didn't he format Eden and lead the enclave himself? A Colonel with as much experience as he seemed to have seems to be a better choice than a computer? no? But then again there wouldn't have been the "zomfg hes a computer?!" moment

Yes, first time I talked with him and approx 4 sentences later I told him that he can go and I will not kill him. Then he was amazed and leaved the building. After that, the female paladin with L (forgot the hole name... need to play it again..) said, that I am still like I was coming from the vault few days before.

Chain-of-command. Autumn is a very, very dedicated man and a loyal soldier. He believes in the Enclave and everything it represents - but he is not without a conscience or backbone.

For him, Eden's plan was genocide on an unprecedented scale. Autumn wanted to restore the USA, true, under Enclave's control, but he didn't want to murder everyone.

That's a good point, but I just don't understand how he could agree to follow a computer I mean, I had the same problem with the Shi emperor in San Fran. I think it's a cool idea and everything I just think it takes some willful suspension of reason to actually swallow it.

Edit: But really, this is a science-fiction/ post-apocalypse story so... Deathclaws and plasma weapons are pretty hard to believe too, so a computer for a president isn't so far fetched I suppose.

I guess it's just a personal perception of things. There's not really any comparable experience for us in real life, to imagine taking orders from a machine. This falls into the line of thought, machines are made to serve man.

Instead of thinking of Eden as a charismatic leader, I saw him as a strategic planner and overseer for the Enclave. If you make a computer AI to plan and control all of your operations, what's the point in not listening to it? And thus, the twist near the end where Autumn orders everyone to disregard Eden's command and kill the player.

Since most likely every living thing outside of a vault was exposed to some form of radiation, the modified FEV would've just killed everything. What's the point in ruling over a graveyard? Autumn seemed to want to conquer the Wasteland as it was. Better to take control by your own strength than to play God. Or maybe he believes in honor in combat. His mannerism and speech seems to indicate so.
