Bah! Broken water chip? Where?

Okay, there is a rather interesting discussion going on in the thread "ghouls or mutants", and it has me spinning theories like MacBeth's witches. This seemed to be one of the more viable ones:

I'm sure that those of you that have played Fallout 1 remember that ghoul in the Followers of the Apocalypse basement, the one who said that he, too, was from a Vault 13? That said he, too, had been sent out long ago by the Overseer to find a waterchip? Well, he never found it, did he? And you're still alive, aren't you? Since the Vault didn't have any spare chips, the most likely solution is that the chip wasn't broken.

It also stands to reason that, since he got to Necropolis, and (with the help of Set) pretty much wiped out a super-mutant occupation force, that he was quite a remarkable individual in his time. Much as your vauldweller was...

Couple this with the Overseer's control-freak-with-issues/mama bird personality type, and the theory pretty much comes together.

I contend that it is a likely possibility that your chip was never broken. The Overseer saw that you were a strong, capable individual, and that it was possible that you were the kind of person that the other vaultdwellers would admire. Would look to. Would listen to. That you were either capable of leading them on the outside, or of eclipscing him in their hearts and minds. So, he sent you on a wild goose chase, hoping that the wasteland would take care of you for him, or that the stigma associated with travelling outside the vault would ruin you in the eyes of your fellow Vault citizens.

Of course, he didn't count on you coming back alive, and a hero in the eyes of many vault citizens, so he just had to up and kick you out. Note how he did it outside of the vault, where there were no witnesses. Once you were gone, he could tell the other vaultdwellers whatever he wanted about what had happened to you, and why you were gone.

Now, keep in mind that this is brash, unrefined theory. I'm sure it needs a little work, or a lot of work, before it will be useful to anybody as anything.

I think your on to one of Black Isle's conspiracy's...who knows what else you'll dig up.

You're a smart guy, Yamu. You're topics are exactly why I suggested this board's creation.

By the way, have you ever heard of MUSHs? =)

thank yew. wow, sumbuddy kald me smart!

No, seriously, you really suggested this board?

'Yup, and they seem interesting, but I was never really able to get into 'em. Most of the ones I've found were populated by idiots, and all the good ones I've tried are full of "professional" mush'ers who weren't willing to abide me while I learned the ropes. Why do you ask? Do you participate in any good MUSHs that you could refer me too?

Well the Enclave believe that the water chip was broken down. When you talk to the president in Fallout 2 and ask him about the vaults being test. You know the all men in one vault thing or don't give them any food. Well he said that the water chip wasn't meant to break down but it was lucky how the vault dweller saved them. Vault 13 was the control vault with no problems. Plus Vault city recieved a large amounto f water chips that were meant to go to Vault 13. Vault 13 got the extra GECK instead. This is arguing both ways. If the Overseer knew all of this however he would have selected the water chip to break down because there were no spares. But he pulled a pretty cnvincing story. What about the rationing of water and the water theif quests. How would he have handled the citezens. He couldn't suddenly goe them water. He would be found out and kicked out. And how about those before you, were they all people who were too powerful. I suppose they were, afterall the ghoul in the basment of the followers did take out a lot of mutants.

Although the second section of the game does support this. He got so pissed off at seeing you return he through you straight at most powerful force in the wasteland that he could find. When even that didn't destroy you he chucked you out. There's no proof either way. At least i don't think so.

Yes, I seriously did. It was about a month before it was put into action, but I thank Roshambo for doing it at all.

Actually, there is a Fallout MUSH in the process of being setup and located, and you seem like the prime canditate for Head Theme Admin. I don't think ever ever seen anyone one this board with as much knowledge about the Fallout universe as you, which is exactly why you're perfect for the job.

Damnit Yamu!

Just when I think I've spouted off a theory even the great Yamu couldn't match you have to go off and beat it with the ultimate conspiracy. Damn fine job son, I'll match you some day...

Kilroy, a MUSH is a Multi-User Shared Habitat (sometimes called Hallucination). It's an interactive text-based world. You can Role-Play there in Real Time in different locations, etc. Think Zork, with RP.

Maybe you've heard of a MUD? It's almost the same thing, except... better. No hack-and-slash, just fun RP with friends.

Of course the enclave would think that the chip was broken, that's what the Overseer would've entered into his logs. There's no way in hell that someone like the Overseer would leave any physical evidence of a scheme like that.

And, concerning the bit about the citizens, he's the most powerful citizen in the vault, with unrestricted access. He could've took out the chip, or disabled the system, and made it look like the chip was broken. Then, if you returned with the chip, fine. If you didn't, he could've said you did, or made up some story to explain how he got a new chip/fixed the chip, that would make him look even better in the vault citizen's eyes.

Tech problems

I think your right. In the begining of Fallout when your first let out of the vault if you try to get back in useing the console it says "Sorry, but we can't let you back in right now. Uh, technical problems. Try again later."

RE: Tech problems

Yep I was just looking throught my Fallout manual the other day and saw the picture.

No, I'm in Canada. MUDs are popular worldwide, since everyone can connect to them from just about anywhere.

That's pretty cool, though. A Swedish MUD. Heh.

If he had a water chip, how come you get a little video after 150 days of a dead vault guy. Maybe he disabled it and couldn't fix it when they really needed water?

MAN i always knew there was something suspicius about...well, everything. I mean, the ending just sounded so...phony, yeah, like just because i'm a hero he's gonna KICK ME OUT?? jeez...but now it all makes sense...and i think that is a very valid theory because the guys at Black Isle are known to add stuff that you actually have to think about after the fact. though i think the motive might be a little off... maybe he sent you off to see if it is safe to send people out...

you know, you meet that guy that says he was on a quest to find a water chip, but he never returned, AND you see that bone pile right outside the entrance of v13, so perhaps he sent a person out to see if all was clear, the radiation took over him and perhaps killed him, then he sent that ghoul out, and the radiation had gone down enough to where he survived but was like mutated, then you're next....
