As much as I loathe that cartoon, this is just so completely insane. But it's still funny:

US right attacks SpongeBob video

SpongeBob SquarePants

US conservative groups are up in arms over a music video featuring children's TV heroes such as the cheerful cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants.

Focus on the Family and other groups say the video - a remake of the Sister Sledge hit, We Are Family - is a vehicle for pro-gay propaganda.

The video's makers plan to mail it to US schools in the spring to promote tolerance and diversity.

They say the attack is based on a misunderstanding.

The video also features children's favourites like Bob the Builder, along with characters from Sesame Street and The Muppet Show.

But James Dobson, founder of right-wing Christian group Focus on the Family, singled out SpongeBob at a black-tie dinner in Washington in the run-up to President Bush's inauguration, the New York Times said.

SpongeBob - who appears on the children's cable channel Nickelodeon - is seen as an icon for adult gay men in the US, apparently because he regularly holds hands with his sidekick Patrick.

His creators deny that he is gay, but he is not the first such character to cause controversy.

In 1999 conservatives claimed handbag-carrying Teletubby Tinky Winky, an import from the UK, was a bad role-model.

'Easy lesson'

Nile Rodgers, who wrote the song and is founder of the We Are Family Foundation (WAFF) which released the new video, says it is intended to help teach children the values of co-operation and unity.

"We believe that this is the essential first step to loving thy neighbour," he said. "And the fun and exciting format makes it a lesson that's easy for children to learn."

But conservatives say it sees the video as a cunning attempt to promote homosexuality.

They point to the fact that the WAFF is linked to a pledge being promoted by some liberal groups which includes a recognition of tolerance of sexual identity.

"We see the video as an insidious means by which the organisation is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," Paul Batura, a spokesman for Focus on the Family, told the New York Times.

Mr Rodgers said the groups may have confused his foundation with an unrelated organisation with a similar name that supports gay youth.

WAFF spokesman Mark Barondeso told the newspaper that anyone who thought the video promoted homosexuality "needs to visit their doctor and get their medication increased".

They still don't get that homosexuality isn't just a style but a sexual and romantic preference, eh?

Yeah. And they actually believe it's some kind of 'disease' you can 'catch', or perhaps something you can be convinced to be. It's hilarious, really.
Deep down inside I'm convinced that every single one of those people thinking that have to be gay. I mean, no sane straight guy would be that paranoid or afraid of being gay, only gay people who don't want to be gay do that.

Yet another proof that American conservatives are fucking morons. It would be interesting to isolate a few specimens and study their behaviour, for it is difficult to believe that a genuine homo sapiens can be so bloody retarded.

Or rather, bisexuals.

Well, that happens when you force yourself into a role that doesn't fit you.
People who have their "coming out" don't suddenly catch "the ghey", they just suddenly realize or accept that they have always been gay.

By their theory I'd have to have been kissing boys since I was born. I happen to live in one of the cities with the highest "gay density" on the freaking continent.

Nevertheless I never fantasized about dropping the soap.
I suppose I must be immune to the ghey or something.

I find it hard to believe that any of these right-wing fundies are serious when they say shit like this and somehow still manage not to swallow their own tongues.

I think they're like parrots. They go on repeating the same phrases without thinking about the meaning.

Do you think even one of them has ever participated in a complex discussion or read a scientific book without dropping it after five seconds and shouting "Bullshit"?

So, if I was to say that you were the gayest thing since gay hit Gay Town, I'd be 1/3 correct?

Its unkosher to be angered by the niggras anymore, so of course tolerance and diversity = gay.

I'm not gay, I'm generally rather tollerant
I'm only extremely intollerant about who gets into my pants.

scientific for us or them?
considering many of them believe the bible is as scientific book,
yes.
And considering that there are some books about things like intelligent design i would say they`we read those books, and talked a lot about it.
The question if these books are that scientific however is very unclear to me.

Science requires method. There is no method in interpreting the bible, as its all left up to individual interpretation.

So the bible can't be "scientific," even based on perception.

The Bible contains many sociological ideas if you interpret it the right way.

But there's more than one way to interpret the Bible.

Maybe it WAS the world's biggest and oldest fantasy novel.

The problem is that the bible was written for people who lived 1000 years ago. People try to apply modern reasoning to it and it just doesn’t work.

...

1700 years ago, at the least. And it has to do with problems humanity has and always will confront.

Need i mention the fact that clearly not all conservatives are calling spongebob evil? Some crazy conservative groups get all the media attention because they are stupid enough to say shit like "spongeBob promotes gays". I am conservative and these people dont represent my opinions, or the opinions of most conservatives.

Oh I have no problems with most conservatives or Christians, but it's the kind of people that call Spongebob Squarepants gay that are fucking up America. (And I just know that eventually it'll spread to Canada.)

I really sometimes get the feeling...er... there're too many stupid ignorant fanatic assholes in this world.

I never blame conservatives in general, cause in my eyes conservatism is a political and moral attitude I have to accept and life with– even if I see myself as a political left person.
But in this case the border between ultra-conservatism and stupidity seems to be a very narrow line . (er, close line? sorry, my English sucks)

b.t.w.: Sponge Bob is great, nearly as funny as Bernd-das-Brot :D

The Revolution has no need for Spongebob nor Bible-thumping crazies ($2.99 for a 2 pack at your local God-R-Us) in these times of trial! Repent for your heresy or be crushed under the boots of our brethren!
