basement of 4th generator building in St. Louis...WHAT IS IT

Ok, you know the fourth generator building, the one with the mutie lab and stuff...well you go down the stairs past a super mutant that you can't talk to or kill (what the fuck is up with that??), and in a bookcase there is some anti-rad stuff...in the far SE corner there is a way to go that's covered in goo that'll radiate you.

so i send my two guys that have the environmental armor and give them rad-x...and go all the way to the WAYYY back...there is NOTHING...absolutely NOTHING...since this is the only thing in the basement of the building, there HAS to be something here (besides the useless junk in the chest in the room to the NE) because if there wasnt that'd mean the whole basement had no purpose. i think the basement too big to not have a purpose...so what's in the damn goo tunnels????????? lol thanks...

In the briefings, or rather on the pip-boy map, it states that this appears to be the only entrance into the factory. This is crap, of course, and I was also confused for a bit.

This game seems to be filled with tunnels that have no meaning. In quincy there is one under the whore house that has nothing in it. in junction city there is a very loooong tunnel filled with rats (at least there are some guns and things) and in coldwater there is a very strange tunnel behind the drunken preist. there is a flamer in there and some metal armor mkII. WHY is that there? I expected to find a wharehouse of alchohol or something. why would the preist have a flamer?
