Best Day for Movies in a While

LOS ANGELES - He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been named. Ralph Fiennes (news), who played memorable evil guys in "Red Dragon" and "Schindler's List," has signed on to portray the wicked warlock Voldemort in the next "Harry Potter (news - web sites)" movie, Warner Bros. announced Wednesday.

Voldemort is so bad that the magical characters in author J.K. Rowling (news - web sites)'s stories do their best not to speak his name aloud.

In the first three installments of the saga, a deadly magic spell meant for a baby Harry Potter backfired and deprived him of a body. So only his spirit wrought havoc in "The Sorcerer's Stone," "The Chamber of Secrets" and the recent "Prisoner of Azkaban."

But Voldemort finally returns in the flesh in part four: "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."

Filming has been under way on "Goblet" since June 25, mainly with star Daniel Racliffe as the boy-wizard, and co-stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as his pals Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Fiennes has not yet filmed any scenes.

Other additions to the cast include Brendan Gleeson ("Troy," "The Village" and "Cold Mountain") as Potter's new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, the fearsome Mad-Eye Moody, and Miranda Richardson, ("The Crying Game," "Sleepy Hollow") as Rita Skeeter, a gossip columnist for a magical newspaper.

The cast also includes Robert Pattinson as Hogwarts student Cedric Diggory, Stanislav Ianevski as Quidditch star Viktor Krum, French actress Clemence Poesy as the heart-fluttering visiting student Fleur Delacour, and Katie Leung as Potter's love-interest and Quidditch rival Cho Chang.

"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," directed by "Four Weddings and a Funeral" filmmaker Mike Newell, is scheduled for theatrical release in November 2005.

Yay! More okay to sub-par actors for a sub-par fantasy movie series!

This truly is the best day for movies in a long time!

Mediocre movies, that is.

Good cast! I only wish that they made the films longer. I mean if people sit through an filmographic elephant such as LoTR: Return of the King, would it kill the producers of the Potter movies to add 1 more hour?

Ralph Finnes was the Nazi in Schindler's List...you know that, right? He's among the best living actors.

Brenda Gleeson and Miranda Richardson are also both excellent. Anyone name a movie where Finnes and Richardson where in together?

Yeah, definitely one of my favorite characters of all time.

Still, doesn't change the fact that Harry Potter sucks.

Emotional story of a confused young man and the scary world around him, a brilliant script, beautiful direction, great acting, and exciting action sequences >>> 14 year olds riding broomsticks

Goblet of Fire... Oh, yes.... (Hisses like Gollum).

Ralph Fiennes' the perfect choice for the dark lord, he'd have that cold and heartless stare as the bastard himself.

Bah! Ed Harris will always be a better Nazi than Ralph Fiennes (judging the actors themselves that is, not the movies they were in).

Hmm... not too long before the movies start running out of books to be based on. Besides, Daniel Radcliffe is getting long in the tooth to play the part (it showed in the last movie, it will only get worse). Not like these points haven't been mentioned before though.

The books are getting way too long to turn into movies. Azkaban came across as so rushed, and that was one of the shorter books. Goblet of Fire was the second longest, there is no way they can cram it into two hours and not cut out three quarters of the book. But I'll go see it anyway, because I'm a consumer whore.

And Ralph Fiennes kicks ass, good casting right there.

Sounds like Harry Potter to me...

At the risk of looking like a total geek, have you even read Harry Potter, Malkavian?

I'm judging by the two movies I've seen.

I've also skimmed the first book, and another one. Can't remember which.

It's lame.

You confuse me with your Spiderman 2 defense: none of what you said applies to Spiderman 2. Here, let me list a few examples of what applies to Spiderman 2: one dimensional characters, stereotypical villains, a cast that sucks egg-laying proboscii (sp?) and I could go on. One thing I truly dislike of most American comic books is that they have turned characters that at one time could be considered interesting, into dead forces. You don't need to read the newest Spiderman, X-Men or Superman to know what is going to happen. Unlike the heroes from Spaghetti Westerns, the heroes from comic books nowadays are never allowed to either die or ride into the sunset, never to hear from them again. No matter what happens in the movies, comic books or games, you always know the hero is trying to restore everything to normal. One thing I liked about Lord of the Rings is the fact that the war that was going on was irreversible. It didn't matter if they defeated Sauron or not, things were changing and they would keep on doing that. That can't be said about comic books, and superhero movies and games and it is the reason why I hate them.

This is why Return of the Dark Knight is one of the greatest comic books ever written.

Speaking of Those-"Who-Should-Not-be-Named", anyone checked out that new Shyamalan joint? Very good concept and well produced. One of those "Panic Room"ish movies where you will never see anything like it.
