best main character

Hi!

What do you think is the best main character. It seems the guides tend to favor sniper/energy weapons guys, but these usually have low charisma and endurance, which seems to affect promotion and recruits as well as skill levels.

I'd like to know hwat you think the best main character should be.

Cheers,

Welsh

I'm a fan of the high Charisma guy myself.

Charism 8, means fast promotion, So fast even that for game balance purposes you don't always get all the guys you're entitled to.

Gifted and Fast shot will make you powerful enough,,,,

well, it depends on your preferences: the best 2 characters are the sniper and the heavy-warrior

sniper
traits: gifted, small framed or one handed
tag skills: light guns, barter/steal (not both!), sneak
attribute: high agility, high perception

heavy-warrior
traits: gifted, fast shot
tag skills: heavy guns/energy weapon (choosing both is not advised), barter/steal (as above), sneak
attributes: high agility, high perception, high strength (for the m2!)

high charisma is usefull if you're using the "barter" skill (and you do not steal) and is VERY usefull if you want some good recruites (the new recruits will have better perks and traites, and sometimes their skill points will be even higher than yours)

endurance is just a waste. you shouldn't spend more than 4 points on this attribute.

and finally-spend at least 5 points on your intelligence.

i hope you learnt something, and if not-i just wasted 5 minutes for nothing. AGAIN. :-)

Thanks,

and yes, thanks for your 5 minutes, Major Glory.

Does having better NPCS make that much of a difference in the game? It would seem that normal ones are not so bad to begin with.

The main character I came up with has traits- Small frame and gifted which gave me 6 across the board except agility (7) then boasted agility and perception to 8 each. I gave strength at least a 7 (for bigger guns). I don't know if the strength bonus is a waste because with power armor and perks you can manage the big guns.

Skills tagged where small guns, energy weapons and sneak. Not sure if the small guns is a waste, because there are probably enough magazines out there to boost this up.

I figure having a designated NPC as chief barterer.

Does having a 5 or 6 make that big a differene in Charisma? It would also seem that intelligence is crucial for skill points.

Like to hear more thoughts on this. I am going on mission 3 but I could start over.

Cheers!

having better npcs makes ALL the difference. if your charisma is high enough (my character's charisma is 8) most of the npc will be more skillful than your own character in the same level...

why on earth would someone want a charisma score of 8, you ask?
have you heard of the perk "divine favour"? well, you can get it in level 14 if your charisma is 8 or more. i don't know exactly what it does, but it boosted my perception from 7 (or was it 8?)
to 10. as you understand, i am satisfied :-)

you are right-high strength is not needed if you use a suit of power armor.

i dont think that small guns is a waste, because the heavy guns lack the accuracy of the light ones (it is very important in some missions, when you need to kill enemies and spare the innocent, all standing in the same crowded room).

and one more thing-most of the npc's charisma score are extremely low-4 or less! that's why i designated my main character as the trader of my squad. (140 barter so far!)

i think that the best main character is the one i chose myself
strength-5 (he only uses light weapons)
agility-10 (10 action points!)
endurance-4 (this attribute just sucks)
charisma-8 (for the "divine favour")
perception-8 (he he. it's 10 now)
luck-5
intelligance-5 (not so bad. he doesn't have many essential skills anyway)

he is gifted and small framed.

tag skills: sneak (the most important skill), light weapons and barter. yes. you read just fine. the word is "barter".

i hope you got the general picture.

I made a character and started playing, and I found out two things.

First, having a strength of 4 is not a good idea.

Second, if you have a strength of 4, do not tag big guns.

That second one was a mistake I didn't catch until I actually finished a few levels, and now I don't want to bother starting over. At least I have 5 other dudes to help out. My main character just manages. Although a FN P90 isn't too bad with AP rounds...

Some questions: does science do anything? It was helpful in Fallout 1 and 2, but I have never seen a single use for it in BOS. Also, how can you have a radioactive party member? When I get one, it makes everyone sick really fast.

I think there is atleast one time that you use it. It's in that mission near the end where you have to destroy a nuclear reactor owned by the robots. One of the panels that opens a door or turns off the forcefields with (don't remember which)wont respond to lock pick and if you do you get the "looks scientific" response. That's the only place where I remember using science skill.
