Best way to get back to the real Fallout

First time out of the vault
I've spent an embarrassing amount of time playing 4 and am ready to get back to real RPGs in Fallout 1 & 2. Please recommend how best to get started.

I still have my CD ROMs, but haven't played in more than 5 years and several computers ago. I am moderately tech savy, but I hate screwing around with getting old games to run on Windows 10 and at 720p on a widescreen TV. I am fine buying (again) from Gog or Steam.

I want to be able to use mods and am a little overwhelmed by all of the options. I remember playing Killap's restoration when it first came out, and using FAME, and I like the idea of comprehensive new content and increased difficulty more than misc mods. I'm pretty sure I've done everything in the original games through a dozen or more playthroughs, so a new twist would be great. I'm hoping the dedicated fans out there have done even more in the years I've been away.

I'm open to either 1 or 2, but am leaning to 2 just because it is bigger and has a more refined feel, as I recall.

Any suggestions for a gameplan? Thanks in advance!

If you don't plan to do the manual installation with your CD-ROMs, buying GOG/Steam versions should be a good idea. Although they are censored versions (FO1 - pure EU version without children; FO2 - images related to injection and "drug" & "addict" wording got replaced), you can install unofficial patches to uncensor some of them.

For FO1 you can just use Sduibek's Fixt or TeamX's unofficial patches + Restoration mod.
For FO2 there's killap's Restoration Project, which is almost the "standard issue" for the game nowadays. There are also bunch of mods support it. Or you can try MIB88's Megamod, but I don't have much experience of it.

If you want something different, try Fallout 1.5: Resurrection. It's probably one of the best TCs with English translation available.

Thx NovaRain, I appreciate the tips! The Resurrection expansion is exactly what I was thinking of, and I am glad it is compatible with Killap's Restoration. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the games have been censored for the cloud platforms, but still . . . . Done it before with lots of mods on FAME, so I should be able to handle a manual install again.

Are you talking about the "New" Fallout Classic listings? The ones Bethesda put on GOG?

Yes. Bethesda's releases seem based on GOG old releases (with the same wrong 'music' folder placement), just updating sfall and adding hi-res patch and a nice looking launcher.

Few weeks ago I was bored so I unpack DATs of old CD-ROM and GOG/Steam versions and compared their content. FO2 is somewhat interesting because I didn't know there's a "less-censored" version (not using British English terms, probably not the original UK version?)

I see. I own the originals, both GOG's and the disk/big box. I'll have to compare those sometime.

I have no idea as to what spells were cast when my PC was made but I can, without fault load Fallout 1, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics on Windows 10.

They even work with some overlay types (steam etc) which allows me to have quite an integrated experience even of classic games..

(side note, the native resolution of Diablo does NOT work well with steam overlay... It works fine, but you can't see shit! 640x480 aint much room)

Same, the Fallout Collection works just fine in my W10. Got Fixt for 1 and Restoration Patch for 2.
The Steam Overlay won't work, but that isn' that useful in a game without loading screens or waiting times anyway

I got the first two on disc too.
Runs like a charm on win 10.

Planescape sadly does not
