Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
So, as I promised, I bought this game and will review it. I've spent some time on it already, so here are my thoughts ATM - I tried to be unbiased on this as much as I could and judge it fairly (in other words - I sold out).

A) Let's start with the Vault - impressive graphic work here, I admit. Unfortunatly, this level is way too short. There aren't almost any sidequests and you are hand-held all the time. The grand escape from the Jewel is pretty decent, but the riot gear that guards wear doesn't quite fit in - feels like 90's too much. At least I got to kill the Overseer with a baseball bat - too bad his daughter was pissed on me (and didn't want to come with me - too bad, I'd hit her if I were the PC). Overall, I didn't like the pseudo-communistic paranoia going on in the Vault, but I guess it fits to an isolated cavehole, where people don't get out much. At all, actually.

OK, now the Vault quests - in other words, growing up. I didn't like it, because it's too fast. If you are going to show how your character grew up (and how the hell did he get these wicked speech skills at the age of 10 - goddamnit, that kid talks like he already finished and college - way out of place dialogue options), put some effort in it, play it out a while longer (at this pace, you don't even notice that you're a kid, since after 10 minutes you're suddenly 19). Or don't at all - after all, it gets boring during the second playthrough (yes Beth, some people enjoy playing games more than once). Guess they didn't learn from the Temple of Trials and Imperial Sewers. Anyway - storyline here is uninteresting mostly.

Dialogues and VO - first one is decent, but way below the original's, the second is mostly decent with some better parts. Neelson did a good job creating a good role model father, makes the player actually care about what happened to him; Here and there we get some skill-related options, which is quite nice. Overall - decent work.

Combat - one thing - VATS make you superhuman. I find it difficult to die, providing I find enough ammo (which is pretty scarce, but not too much - this was done properly IMO). The whole problem lies in the fact, that you don't loose AP when moving, so if you fuck up badly, you can still escape or hide. Oh, and SLOW-MO HAS TO GO. It makes combat too long and I don't need to watch every bullet fly into my opponent's head to rip it apart. Although it's fun to smash radroaches (another annoying thing - where would things this big hide in a space so tight like a Vault?) with a baseball bat, having to watch the same animation each time just gets in the way. Not everyone has hours of free time to play (not anymore, anyway).
This should be left to the player to decide.

*CUT* Unfortunatly, I gotta go, so I will continue this topic later.

superhuman in VATS you say? I say more like immortal...if you have ammo.....just wait until you have 100 energy weapons (i hate that by the way....i miss the 300 max skill and its stupid because you can max out every skill at lvl 18.... :x ) action boy perk, sniper perk and grim reapers spirit....you almost cant die...in fact since i picked up GRS....ive never died...even with broken armor, because lets face it...if they dont even get a rated shot against you, why fix armor?

and since when the hell did repair become one of the most useful skills in the game? who at bethesda thought that one up?

Another part of the review (this is going to take a while, I guess),

B) Skeleton of a civilization

Now I'll get to the main part of the game - outside of the Vault. Firstly, I'll describe how my playthrough looked like:

Not being particulary impressed by Megaton from the trailers\videos, I decided to roam a bit through the ashes of Washington DC. Almost immediatly after leaving the tunnel leading to the Vault, I was attacked by a wild dog. Strange, because wild dogs tend to hunt in packs, not alone. Anyway, I killed it fairly easy using VATS. After that, I got attacked again by some giant fly shooting rocks out of it's ass. *sigh* I guess there was a reason why there were no flying insects in previous Fallout's - something that big covered in chitinous armor would have serious trouble with flying. Again, this was killed with ease (using a BB gun to that). Later I stumbled upon an old robot shooting acid or plasma or whatever - this took some time to deal with, but again, VATS make combat fairly easy. When I scraped that sad mistake of an interesting opponent, I found an Assault Rifle and some ammo (the gun was pretty damaged). Moving forward in the direction of a ruined bridge, I encountered Raiders for the first time. I dislike how they look like, but I guess that's how somoene would look in an armor made of scavenged junk (although IMO it doesn't offer enough protection - lots of body parts are uncovered). Here, for the first time I was killed once or twice, but manage to kill all of them in the end. On the last raider I found a sniper rifle with few rounds in it left. Even though this was mostly an uninteresting skirmish, I liked that the bridge was turned into a hiding place - ruins of a bridge are an excellent place for a base. After gathering up the loot, I looked around a bit for something interesting, cleared out the nearby school from raiders, then got bored and went to Megaton.

So, wrapping up this part of the game, I'll move to conclusion, the cons and pros etc.

Wandering aimlessly will lead to lots of fights, often with uninteresting enemies that you can't hit without VATS because of the freaky AI pathfinding (they run at full speed left and right, then flee and come back etc.). Combat itself is fairly easy and entertaining, but the constant slow motion makes it too long and frustrating at times. Ammo is decently hard to find and equipment wears off pretty fast (which is good, because most of it is either 200 years old or made of scrap), so you won't be able to fight endlessly. I've met no NPCs or special encounters at this time, but then, I didn't go far. Oh, I'd almost forgot - the graphics. I have a pretty decent rig (Core2Duo, GeForce 7900GTO, 2 gigs of RAM, 500 gigs of HD), but I can't play this on high detail without loss in performance. Having to play on lower details, I wasn't particulary impressed by the sights, but it's hard to judge when you play with AA off. Models are good enough, but animations and AI are lacking - characters move too fast and randomlessly, and have trouble with obstacles (stairs for example), which spoils the fun a bit. Overall, wandering provided little fun ATM.

I'll continue the review some time later, hope it's helpfull to y'all.

Sorry for double posting, but the topic wouldn't be refreshed if I only edited the post.

This game is pathetic - don't bother with it. I lost my money - don't make the same mistake.

I stopped playing it half-way finished, because it is too fucking stupid - dialogues, quests, combat -EVERYTHING is boring and half-assed.

Fuck this game.

Mods can greatly enhance the fun i think.

so far with only ruleset mods i've been able to actually be scared of enemies, VATS are interesting(as you can die in VATS and enemies get to shoot more) and im not yet godlike after 1 day playing.

Good fun, get sagersmod.

I totally agree, i waited 10 years for a Fallout 3 and my disappointment can know no bounds, Its not because its not isometric, its not because its a been turned into a FPS, its because it is a shit FPS, its because of railroading in the main quest, terrible dialog and AI. This is not an RPG, its a terrible imitation, (And i could at least finish TES Oblivion once.) This game is not only not true to the Fallout universe, it is not even a real role playing game. It is POS2.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R would have been a better sequel for this series and it had nothing at all to do with the Fallout setting, and it was buggy as hell.

All that i can do now is wait eagerly for Killaps ver 1.3 of the restoration project.

I know i am ranting but i'm very upset. Some details may be incorrect, if so i apologise.
I'm pissed off i spent $100 on a game that i waited for forever, only to discover that without extensive modding it wouldnt even be worth my time.

For the record i made just Rivet City (In a week of exploring) before i realised i was had gotten to the point of just trying to get through the main quest as fast as possible to see something i actually liked about the game

EDIT. I hate the fact that lock picking and science skill checks are only 25, 50, 75, and 100. i mean what the fuck is the point of a skill check if you cant open a lock if you are at 23? Fuck. Lockpicking is to easy, hacking is, well lets face it, quicksave and randomly click 4 times, if you fail.. oh well better quickload. I hate the fact that my dialog choices dont reflect the way i feel my character would really respond. A good guy; Yes that is terrible, i will help you. Neutral; Thats bad, what do i get for helping you? Evil; You suck so much, Ill help you, give me stuff when i complete the quest.
Where the FUCK is choice and consequence?

[spoiler:5fbd8c1bb9]Ie. Butch in Vault 101 when his mother's being attacked by radroaches
You can:
1. Help him
2. Give him a weapon and let him fight them.
3. Tell him to fuck off.
4. Kill him and his mum.
The only part of the game i actually felt like i had a choice.

You can't mod out the main story - the same shit as with Oblivion - no amount of mods will change the game ENOUGH, it will simply not work if you'll try to fiddle with it too much. I installed 20+ mods into Oblivion only to found that this is the same game with slightly better gameplay. After spending 5 hours trying to make the goddamn game work with all the mods I wanted.

Mods won't change jack. Perhaps the combat will be better, but are you going to change the whole voice over and rewrite all dialogues? Update every location to make it interesting at all?

Thought so.

Wow. I totally agree. It irritated me when I realized that all I had to do was really pump the skills I knew I would use up to those specific numbers as I leveled, and then round out the others.

One thing I do with the hacking is, instead of using all four chances and then reloading the game, I just use three chances, and then exit out of the hack. Re-select the terminal, and use three chances again. Do that until you hit the code you are looking for.

There are no real consequences in this game. I attacked a child once, in Megaton. Couldn't kill the kid, of course, but everyone in the town attacked me afterwards, even though I hit the kid in his house where no one could see. Guess that's sort of a consequence... Also if you kill enough people and become evil enough, the Regulator's will come after you, but all they are good for is quick ammo refills and an easy way to get one of those coats if you hadn't gone to Megaton and taken the Sheriff's yet, or if you want one without the badge on it.

Sadly no. Ravager, you are correct, the only way that this game can actually be fixed is with an uninstall and a full format. Once again, to the people who are fans of the previously released games in the fallout universe (1+2) Please, do not buy Fallout 3. You will only be disappointed. Buy stalker, and use the oblivion lost mods. To all FPS fans, please do not buy Fallout 3, you will only be disappointed. Buy COD4. At least it has a real storyline, one you can follow, oh, and sadly you can empathise more with the player character(s) than you can in Oblivion 2.

Actually you can basically mod in a totally seperate storyline and just use the main as a amusing diversion. Thats what I did in Oblivion and I was happy as can be.

As for the combat, such as targeting, weapon damage, weapon weights, ammo weights, item degradation, they were all fixed basically within the first week. I have mods for all of that.

Oh and they have a mod for hacking being based on backing skills as well rather then a arbitrary number.

I do have my gripes. Don't get me wrong. The game was to canned spam. It did please me though after I sufficiently moded it and I guess your all entitled to your opinions. That said, I support the game. Really actually love it.

P.S. Fixed the Vats tonight so I can get hurt in it, and it moves fast! WAHOO! Took me 40 hours to speed it up but it works! Well sorta.. working out a few kinks. Ill release it in a bit.

What it basically does is you go into vats, things move just a tiny bit slower, enough to say yes Im concentrating so I can do things faster then them, then I pick parts and beat them to peices in realish time. VERY COOL!

On the other hand there was no particular reason to bump this thread specifically just to say the game sucks, since I'm sure you could find (and have found) a bunch of other threads devoted to this.

Yeah Per, but I wanted to kinda, uh finish this thread. I was trying to make a playthrough here, but I realized this ain't going to happen, since I got tired with the game quickly after I started.

Anyway, I am tired of Oblivion-like games and no amount of mods will make Fallout 3 interesting again to me.
