Would be a nice idea to fix the way books boost skills. Right now, your stats have no effect so you can be an idiot that can only say "Oog" but you can still read and learn form the "Big Book of Science". This is absurd.

Make it so the base skill points depend on, say, Int and Per; you can have a 0.5% skill increase per point of each, with a minimum of 1% increase and then modify it according to the skill level, Comprehension perk etc.

Also, you could have different "levels" of books. For example, a school physics textbook could boost the science skill up to say 50%, and could be used by anyone (assuming anyone with Int below 3 can actually read). A high-school organic chemistry textbook would require a minimum science skill (say 30%) and stats (say Int 5 and Per 5) to read and would work until the science skill to 151%. The "How to debug a hex dump" or "Interpreting error messages in Windows BSODs" would require an Int of 9, Per of 10 and Science skill of 150%... It would be effective up to 250%, though :-)

Flame away!

If you ask me...

That's not TOO bad of an idea. I'd like to see interplay be able to accomplish that.

An 9 intelligence to debug hex? Isn't that a bit high? I can't see a near genius being the only person able to debug. Why does perception even play into learning? I can't see why a near-sighted genius would have more trouble understanding a book? I do like the idea of progresively harder books, that require a minimum in the skill. I also like the idea of a higher intelligence increasing the amount you learn.

Now if you want a book that might require a high INT, try something like, "The Complete Book of Physics." Even then, I still think average INT guy would learn something, but probably not as much.

For a computer whiz this would be something common, I guess. For me it's something utterly incomprehensible, so the example was skewed according to my experiences :-)

I do think that even the MS programmers would have a tough time interpreting whatever a BSOD is saying :-)

I guess the title of the book is not so important, anyway.

I see your point and I mostly agree. I thought to put Perception in there considering that a highly perceptive person "notices" little things better and so can get that little extra from reading a book. You are right that perception in the game is mostly acuteness of the senses, though. I got carried away a bit there. :-)

Yep, that was my original idea. Basically my big problem was that the game allows INT 1 characters that can't even speak to read and learn from a book. I mean, if you're too dumb to speak, you probably can't even read!

Anyway, glad you people liked the idea. It obviously needs a bit of polishing and balancing.

Thats a great idea, if they were to do that it would also be necasary to have beginer books, like "see spot run, run spot run" books to raise the int of dumb chars

For some reason I don't think a person who communicates in grunts is going to be able to read. Speaking is easier to learn than reading, now maybe if you had some sort of learn to speak holo-disk...you might be able to raise that characters speech. But to raise their INT should take more than a book.

I reckon ther should be a book which increases the doctor skill as there is one which increases the first aid skill

Perhaps first aid and doctor should fall under the same skill...? A higher aptitude would mean more hp restored.

How come there are only books on SG's, SC, RP, FA and OD? There should be books for more skills like how to shoot that rocket launcher right? Or how to flambee your opponent. Or even matial arts explained and swords and spears, etc, etc
