[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Apr-14-01 AT 05:00AM (GMT)[p] I basically want to know how good Comprehension is in FOT, since I plan to restart once the patch comes out.
Are there lots and lots of books throughout the game?
Which skills do they cover?
Are there more books for some skills than others? Which ones?
How big a skill increase do you get from reading books?
At what point does reading books no longer do you any good?

Thanks in advance for the benefit of your experiences

books never stop doing any good in FOT. they give aproximately 10 points per book on tagged skills, I think only 5 on non-tagged but I'm not sure. 15 if you have comprehension. This seems to be devided as if you were spending points when you are over 100 in the skill though, so that if you had 101 skill it would raise you to 106 or 108 if you had comprehension. There doesn't seem to be enough books to raise a skill to 100 from scratch unless you have the skill taged to begin with and use comprehension. you also have to steal most of the books. The available books are for

Small guns - (guns & bullets)found 3, nice bonus for your snipers.

Pilot (the zen of piloting)- not many of these

Repair (electronic handbooks)- a few of these

Traps (maddock's tricks & traps)- not enough of these to get to 100 by the time you start needing it, but if you don't spend anything on it, you will get 100 eventually tagged.

Outdoorsman (outdoorsman)- enough of these to get to 100 tagged somewhere in the middle of the mutant missions

Science (Science Journals) - found quite a few of these, haven't ever seen a use for science but it's supposed to affect your dammage on robots after they come out with the patch.

There may be other books I haven't found. for instance there was 1 book of energy weapons in fo2 that was fairly difficult to get.

Thanks.

If you have to get most of the books by stealing I think I'll give Comprehension a miss. It's tedious enough searching all the shelves, desks, etc. without having to go through every NPC's pockets, too.
I appreciate the depth of your reply.

Thanks again

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Apr-15-01 AT 01:26AM (GMT)[p]I believe the figures Justisaur quoted are very misleading. I found books to be extremely helpful throughout a lot of the game. For the record, books give you +15 normally, and +22 (maybe +23?) when you have comprehension skill. This is for skills that are below 100 and untagged. I gave Stitch the comprehension skill as his first perk, and proceded to make him into my "universal soldier". (Ugh - what a terrible movie that was.) If the skill is tagged, double that figure. Once you're over 100, half the figure (so you're back to 15 for tagged skills). I believe it starts costing 3 points per increase for skills about 125, and at some point it changes to 4 and so on. But right now, Stitch has at least 125 in traps, first aid, science, repair, and outdoors, all without spending a single point in any of those skills. Pilot is also at about 75, although it's not very useful.

My thought, though, comprehension is a must and at least one character should take it very early and start reading all the books. Make sure this is a character you want to keep for the whole game, though, since once you start reading books with a person, you'll never want to get rid of them.

As to the number of books:

The traps books didn't come quite soon enough to help out really early, since there are a bunch of mines on mission 3, I think. But after a little bit, you'll be high enough at traps that it's no longer much of a concern. All told, I think I encountered at least 4 traps books.

Small guns are nice now and then, but not too common. You'll probably have most of your characters at 125 or more in small guns anyway. I think I've encountered about 4 small guns books.

First aid aren't too bad. I've probably had at least 5 or 6 of them, and Stitch is now at something like 150 first aid skill. He almost seems to heal better with first aid kits than with doctor kits (although doctor is necessary to remove bandaged).

There were at least 4 piloting books, and since my pilot person is over 100, I started giving them to Stitch after a bit. Like I said, though, Piloting is pretty useless.

Science books are really plentiful. I've probably had at least 8 or 9 of these, possibly more. Science isn't a very useful skill, but once the patch is out it should help lots with the robots.

Repair books are also pretty common, since Stitch became my repair person very early even without tagging the skill. His repair is at 145 or so, without ever tagging it or spending extra points, so there must be over 10 repair books.

I've probably had more than 5 Outdoorsman books, since Stitch became my outdoorsman and is over 100. Again, I didn't need to spend any points on this skill.

So unlike Justisaur, I found the perk to be really handy. If I were playing from the beginning, I'd give the perk to someone that was relatively low in Intelligence, though. Stitch is gaining 23 points per level (he might have a perk that gives him an extra 5), so he really didn't need the help. Some of the dumber characters only get 13 per level and could have really used some help from the books. Just my two cents....

Addendum: I neglected to mention that I'm now on the 18th mission and have been VERY thorough in searching through every area. I'm pretty sure I have killed every baddie on every previous mission, and I have probably found every stache of equipment as well (shelves, pots, etc).

Just tell me one thing ...

I try to be fairly thorough, too, exterminating the bad guys and searching for loot. I don't make getting *everything* into a Holy Grail, but I definitely take my time going through the levels.
Just tell me, Kornath - did you go to the extreme of searching friendly NPCs and stealing all the useful stuff you could from them? As I posted above, I find stealing to be pretty tedious. If you got results that good from Comprehension without resorting to endless NPC pocket searching, I will probably reconsider Comprehension.
Another question for the world at large: since Justisaur and Kornath's results are so disparate, is it possible that books have a greater effect for characters with more INT? As I recall, Stitch has a 9 - maybe that's why he wrung so many more points out of his reading. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Thanks, guys

P.S. Universal Soldier is a baaaad movie, but I love it anyway. "You're discharged ...... sarge." Brilliant stuff. And let's don't forget Universal Soldier: The Return. It made the original look like freaking Shakespeare.

RE: Just tell me one thing ...

I haven't bothered with stealing at all. I too find it to be tedious. So all of those results are from searching around, and a couple instances where you can barter for it. (While I don't bother stealing, I barter/gamble at every opportunity.) I'm pretty sure the +15 per book as the base amount is for all characters, since I've used several books on other people and got similar results. Of course, my main character has 10 int, so maybe I only used them on him and stitch. Couldn't tell you for sure. But like I said, I'm relatively sure it's +15 and then a 50% bonus for Comprehension. (I think I had some other character read the piloting books - Jo, probably - and she got a pretty decent bonus. Of course, she has Piloting tagged....)

I do recall a few encounters where I found one of practically every book. One was on a dead guy outside the library or something. I think there was another guy you could barter with that had a bunch. They seem to be pretty common, anyway. Besides, most skills only need one person that can do it (i.e. First Aid, Outdoorsman, Repair, Pilot), so you give all books of that type to the same person. The ones that everyone can use like Small Guns (and Science when the patch comes) are not as plentiful, and you'll probably spend a lot of points on your own in SG anyway.

I never saw Universal Soldier II. First one was enough for me! But I do agree that it was entertaining in a warped sort of way. Between Van Damme and Segal, there are plenty of terrible and yet somehow entertaining movies out there....

Cool. Thanks again.

Comprehension it is. Hopefully it won't get nerfed in the patch.

P.S. Recommended viewing: Double Team with Van Damme and Dennis Rodman. The bad one-liners are priceless, and you'll never look at a Coke machine the same way again.
